Even if a liquid is attached and solidified on a peripheral surface of a coating roller, application of the liquid on a medium is uniformly performed. At least a part of contacting member is separated from the coating roller and the coating roller is rotated in a second direction as a reverse direction to a first direction to pull out the liquid from a liquid retaining space onto the coating roller. Next, by interrupting the above separation and rotating the coating roller in the first direction, a liquid reservoir is formed in the periphery of a contacting portion between the coating roller and the contacting member.

Inkjet printing apparatus, liquid application mechanism and method of controlling the liquid application mechanism

A liquid application mechanism includes a liquid application unit that applies liquid to an application medium, and a liquid supply unit that supplies the liquid to the liquid application unit from a storage unit. The liquid supply unit recovers a portion of the liquid to the storage unit, the portion of the liquid being a portion that has been supplied to the liquid application unit and has not been applied to the application medium. At a bottom portion of the storage unit, a plurality of trap space sections separated from each other by ribs are formed. The trap space sections have continuous rectangular shapes, and are open upward in the direction opposite to gravity. The rib height of the trap space sections is equal to or greater than 3 mm, and the rib interval of the trap space sections is in the range from 2 mm to 10 mm.

There is an output apparatus which prints and outputs onto an ink ribbon in an electronic typewriter or the like. One motor is commonly used for print paper feed, ribbon feed, and ribbon lift up/down operations. The type wheel having a plurality of type elements is bilaterally rotated and its rotation amount is properly controlled to detect the home position of the wheel. The ribbon feed mechanism is controlled by the heteromorphic or noncircular rotary cam having grooves of different kinds of radii. The ink ribbon feed operation and the correction ribbon feed and lift up/down operations are also performed by the rotary cam. With this apparatus, the ink and correction ribbons can be efficiently used and the operation timing of the carriage can be accurately controlled.

An image recording apparatus for recording to a recording medium comprises an ink sheet cassette to mount an ink sheet having an ink, a carriage to mount an ink sheet cassette, a platen to mount a recording medium, a recording head for transferring the ink of the ink sheet to the recording medium to thereby record to the recording medium, an alarm portion provided for the ink sheet in order to warn of the end of ink sheet in the cassette, and a sensor which is commonly used to detect both the size of recording medium set onto the platen and the alarm portion. The alarming portion is formed by adhering or printing a high reflectance material such as a metal foil to the end portion on the back surface of the ink sheet. When the carriage scans the recording medium or platen surface in the lateral direction, the carriage is shifted up together with the ink sheet and the photo sensor automatically detects the presence or absence of the recording sheet on the basis of the difference between the reflectances of the sheet and platen and can detect an image recording region. With this apparaatus, the image recording can be certainly executed with a high reliability at a low cost.
