To increase the pressing force on a chain as the chain undergoes greater elongation. [Resolving Means] Provision is made for: a tensioner armin which a through-holeis formed at a free endwhich can pivot about a pivoting end; a hydraulic tensionerfor causing the tensioner armto pivot about the pivoting end; a lever armhaving a boss partwhich is rotatably supported in the through-holeat the free endand comprises a pin insertion holeat a position which is offset from the center O of the through-hole, said lever arm also having a lever partwhich extends from the boss parttoward the hydraulic tensionerwith the tip end of a pistonof the hydraulic tensionerin abutment against it; and a pinof which one end is fitted in a fixed wall, and of which the other end is inserted into the pin insertion holeof the boss partof the lever arm. When the pistonof the hydraulic tensionerextends, the lever armpivots about the pin, whereby the amount of pushing by the free endof the tensioner arminto a chainis increased.

Tensioning device

A tensioner that includes a piston supported slidably in a piston bore formed in a housing, a piston spring biasing the piston in the protruding direction, and a circlip member having an expandable ring-shaped body that is engageable with the rack teeth of the piston. In the piston bore, the ring-shaped body of the circlip member is adapted to engage with an upper and lower stop surface. The rack teeth of the piston are formed in such a shape that when the ring-shaped body of the circlip member engages with the upper stop surface of the piston bore, the piston is permitted to move in the protruding direction and, when the ring-shaped body of the circlip member engages with the lower stop surface of the piston bore, the piston restricts movement in the retracting direction.
