A hydraulic pressure required to obtain the clutch engaging torque while the hydraulically operated clutch is at rest is calculated. Then, a corrective action is effected by, for example, subtracting from the hydraulic pressure a centrifugal hydraulic pressure which will be developed in the hydraulically operated clutch by the rotation thereof in the gearshift, thus determining a hydraulic pressure to operate the hydraulically operated clutch.

When the maximum-speed range cut-off switch is turned off, speed range shifting is automatically performed dependent on the traveling states of the motor vehicle in one of the shift ranges which is selected by the shift lever shifted to a corresponding shift position. When the maximum speed range cut-off switch is turned on, the setting of the maximum speed range is prohibited in each of the shift ranges. In each shift range, speed range shifting is carried out automatically between the lowest-speed range and a speed range which is one range lower than the maximum speed range dependent on the traveling states of the motor vehicle.

The transmission capacity is controlled to the determined desired value for the determined predetermined period of time. The transmission capacity is maintained so long as the detected predetermined parameter value lies within the predetermined reference range. At least first and second transmission capacity increasing regions are provided which correspond to larger values of the amount of relative slip than that the predetermined reference range corresponds to, wherein the first region is closer to the predetermined reference range than the second region is. A rate of increase of the transmission capacity in the first region is set to a value smaller than that in the second region. A fine-control region is provided adjacent at least one of extreme limits of the predetermined reference range, wherein the transmission capacity is finely adjusted toward the predetermined reference range.

The operational condition control device comprises a vehicle stop sensor for detecting a stopped condition of the vehicle, a temperature sensor for detecting the engine temperature, and a drive circuit for receiving signals from the sensors and operating the alarm device when the vehicle is in the stopped condition, and the engine temperature exceeds the predetermined temperature. In another aspect of the present invention, there is provided an operational condition control device for an internal combustion engine which operates a fuel cut device when the engine temperature exceeds a predetermined temperature and the vehicle is stopped to thereby stop the engine.
