Provided is a novel olefin copolymer comprising &lsqb;A&rsqb; a cyclic olefin, &lsqb;B&rsqb; an aromatic vinyl compound and &lsqb;C&rsqb; an aliphatic &agr;-olefin having from 2 to 20 carbon atoms. (1) the component &lsqb;A&rsqb; therein accounts for from 0.1 to 30 mol %, the component &lsqb;B&rsqb; for from 0.1 to 49.9 mol %, and the total of the components &lsqb;A&rsqb; and &lsqb;B&rsqb; for from 0.2 to 50 mol %; and (2) the copolymer has a glass transition temperature Tg of lower than 60&deg; C. Having a suitable modulus of elasticity, the copolymer can be a substitute for soft polyvinyl chloride as a soft resin, and it has good elastic recovery and transparency.

Using the catalyst, olefinic polymers and styrenic polymers having high stereospecificity are obtained. The amount of the metallic component remaining in the polymers produced is small, and the polymers have high quality. As being highly efficient, the method is favorable to industrial use.

A process for effectively producing a cyclic olefin polymer and a cyclic olefin/alpha-olefin copolymer without opening the cyclic olefin, is disclosed. A process for producing a norbornene polymer consisting essentially of a repeating unit of the formula (I) ##STR1## wherein R.sup.1 to R.sup.12 are the same or different and are hydrogen, C.sub.1 -C.sub.20 hydrocarbon, or a group having a halogen, oxygen or nitrogen, R.sup.5 and R.sup.7 may combine to form a ring, and n is an integer of 0 or more; and having a weight average molecular weight as determined by GPC of 1.times.10.sup.5 to 1.times.10.sup.7.
