After the pressure of the gas in a first chamber reaches the maximum value, the cover for the air bag is broken up. The cover is broken at the pressure of the maximum value, and there is almost no waste of the gas energy. Thus, the cover can be broken up by the small amount of the gas energy and the heat losses are extremely reduced, so that the amount of the gas generating agents are made small. Also, the cover is broken by the burning of the first chamber and the air bag is inflated at the first stage by expansion and inertia of the gas. There is provided a mechanical timing for ignition delay, and then the bag is fully inflated by the burning of a second chamber. Therefore, the bag can be desirably inflated.

This invention relates to a gas generating agent pack of an air bag inflation gas generator that is used to form a combustion chamber in the air bag inflation gas generator and aims to steeply improve reliability for ignition capacity as compared with the prior art by a simple structure. And, this invention consists of accommodating a plurality of gas generating agents with a through hole formed at the center in the stacked state in the axial direction within a longitudinal cylindrical pack, sealing one end of the cylindrical pack with a cap, inserting a projection for accommodating an igniter formed to project at the center of the cap into the through hole of the gas generating agent disposed at one end of the cylindrical pack, and disposing an ignition agent next to the end face of the projection of the cap within the through hole of the gas generating agent disposed at one end of the cylindrical pack.

This invention relates to an air bag inflation gas generator comprising an inner cylindrical member with gas flow openings formed in the outer periphery being inserted into a longitudinal bottom-closed outer cylindrical member with gas outlets formed in the outer periphery with a filter disposed therebetween and gas generating agents being accommodated in the inner cylindrical member, wherein mating sections are disposed at the open end of the inner cylindrical member so as to engage with other mating sections formed at the bottom of the outer cylindrical member, so that the position of the gas flow openings formed in the inner cylindrical member and the position of the gas outlets formed in the outer cylindrical member can be easily and surely set in a predetermined positional relation.

The present invention comprises combustion chambers accommodating gas generating agents formed with separating members in the both ends of an elongate cylinder having gas outlets in the middle thereof, a cylindrical final filter installed inside the middle of the cylinder, intermediary filters installed between the final filter and the separating members in the cylinder, and orifices, facing toward the intermediary filters, opened at the separating members. The present invention may generate much larger volume of combustion gas generated from gas generating agents than the prior generators, purify a large volume of combustion gas completely, and control the burning of gas generating agents.

The air bag inflation gas generator according to the present invention has a combustion chamber comprising a bottom-closed cylinder of a housing body and a lid covering the opening of the bottom-closed cylinder. The housing body comprises the bottom-closed cylinder, a flange extending outward and formed integrally with the opening of the bottom-closed cylinder, and an external cylinder formed on the periphery of the flange and bent toward the bottom of the housing body. A plenum chamber is formed by covering the external and bottom-closed cylinders with a covering member from the bottom of the housing body and by welding the covering member to the cylinders.

A gas generating apparatus for inflating an air bag which comprises a housing with an open joint portion connecting to the air bag and having a combustion chamber formed at the center inside the housing body wherein a high pressure gas is generated upon combustion of a gas generating agent. A partition is provided which defines a mixing chamber in a ring-like configuration by being concentrically disposed so as to be spaced apart from the opening of the housing body by a pre-selected interval whereby the high pressure gas forming a combustion chamber is introduced into the mixing chamber. A nozzle formed in a ring-like configuration is provided at the high pressure gas introducing portion so that the high pressure gas is ejected toward the opening of the mixing chamber and an air intake portion is formed along the nozzle on the housing body.

Gas generating apparatus for inflating air bag

A gas generating apparatus for inflating an air bag is provided which comprises a housing body with an air intake opening of large diameter formed at the center of the housing body. Along an axis, there is a mixing chamber disposed at the center of the housing body and connected to the air intake opening with the axis and also connected so as to open into the air bag. A combustion chamber is formed inside the housing body on the inner side of the outer periphery thereof and generates a high-pressure gas upon combustion. There is a multiplicity of nozzles around the circumference of a junction portion between the air intake opening and the chamber which ejects the high pressure gas from the chamber toward an opening of the mixing chamber at high speed.
