An airbag includes a main bag section and a center bag section deployable to protrude towards a vehicle interior out of an inboard side of the main bag section. An inboard-side member, which forms the inboard side of the main bag section, is composed of a front component and a rear component. The center bag section includes a front wall and a rear wall. The front wall is composed of a rear extended region of the front component which is disposed in such a manner as to protrude rearward out of the rear edge of the front component. The rear wall is composed of a front extended region of the rear component which protrudes forward out of the front edge of the rear component and has a generally identical outer contour to the rear extended region. The center bag section is formed by jointing outer edges of the front and rear extended regions.

Airbag device for front passenger seat

A folded airbag includes an outer circumferential wall which has a passenger side panel section disposed at a passenger side when inflation of the folded airbag is completed and a vehicle body side panel section extending forward from the passenger side panel section when the inflation of the folded airbag is completed, and an inlet opening which is positioned at a front lower side of the vehicle body side panel section when the inflation of the folded airbag is completed. The folded airbag is formed by folding an unfolded airbag body through front-to-back reduction folding that reduces a size of the unfolded folded body in a front-to-back direction so that a length of the folded airbag in a lateral direction is greater than a length of the folded airbag in a front-to-back direction.

At the time of manufacturing an inflator, a blocking body is first disposed at an opening so as to allow the interior and the exterior of a housing to communicate with each other. The blocking body is abutted against a peripheral edge of the opening so as to ensure sealability between the blocking body and the peripheral edge of the opening. A filling nozzle injecting a pressurized gas is then pressed against a periphery of an inlet port of the blocking body, and the pressurized gas is injected from the filling nozzle so as to fill the pressurized gas into the housing through a filling channel. Subsequently, to block the filling channel, the blocking body is energized with a resistance-welding current to resistance-weld an inner peripheral portion of the filling channel. At the same time, the blocking body is fixed to the peripheral edge of the opening by resistance-welding so as to maintain sealability, thereby manufacturing the inflator.

Method of manufacturing an inflator

In a gas generator of the invention, a closure member is disposed so as to be connected to an outer circumferential wall side along a circumferential edge thereof in a housing and to close an outlet port which is formed in a ceiling wall of the housing. Thin breakable portions adapted to be broken when a squib is activated are formed in the closure member so as to extend substantially radially from a center of the closure member in a rectilinear fashion. When the squibis activated, the breakable portions are broken, whereby portions of the closure memberwhich lie between the breakable portions are individually made to be opened radially. A stopper portion is formed on a closure member side surface of the ceiling wall such that the opened door portions are brought into abutment therewith so that the opening angles of the door portions become less than 90&#xb0; while ensuring an angle at which combustion gas is allowed to flow out.

Gas generator

An inflator according to this invention has a structure that an interior part of a housing is charged with a pressurized gas and a gas generating agent capable of generating a gas when combusted, wherein the pressurized gas formed only of an inert gas; a quantity of heat to be generated when the gas generating agent is combusted is set within a range of 6000 to 10000 J/g; and a molar ratio between the pressurized gas and the combustion gas generated by the combustion of the gas generating agent is set within a range of 20 to 40.

Inflator

A passenger's seat airbag device comprises an airbag including a passenger's side wall portion and a peripheral wall portion. The passenger's side wall portion is arranged generally in the vertical direction when the airbag is completely inflated. The peripheral wall portion is formed to converge, when the airbag is completely inflated, generally into a conical shape from the outer peripheral edge of the passenger's side wall portion forward of the vehicle. The airbag is so constructed that the gas inlet port for an open face generally in the horizontal direction is arranged in front of the lower side of the peripheral wall portion by mounting the gas inlet port peripheral wall on a case. The airbag is housed in a case by folding it horizontally and vertically after preliminarily folded. In the airbag preliminarily folded, the portion near the upper edge in the passenger's side wall portion is arranged at a position to confront the gas inlet port. In the preliminarily folded airbag, moreover, the passenger's side wall portion is flatly overlaid on the lower side of the peripheral wall portion.

Airbag device for passenger's seats

A three-dimensional airbag for a vehicle having a main panel having a generally elongated shape. The main panel includes a pair of generally symmetric first portions extending from opposite sides of a fold line and a pair of second portions. A subpanel is secured to the main panel to form a hollow body. The first portions of the main panel are joined to each other along their edges. The edges of the second portions are secured to the edge of the subpanel to close the open front end of the hollow body to form an air bag. The air bag may further include at least one of a baffle for controlling the flow of air within the bag during inflation and a tether assembly for controlling the opening of the air bag.
