An optical recording medium in which a recording layer (4) on which optically readable data are recorded is formed on a rectangular base material (1), a protective layer (5) is formed by roll coating on the recording layer (4) and wherein the base material (1) on which the recording layer (4) and the protective layer (5) have been formed is cut into a predetermined shape. The protective layer (5) provided on the recording layer (4) is formed of a material having a low Young modulus and a lower thermal conductivity as compared with the base material.

An information recording medium wherein the recording layer consists of a thin film of a SbSe compound containing 58-85 atomic % Sb, with the balance Se. This material has been found to facilitate transformation from the crystalline state to the amorphous state or from the amorphous state to the crystalline state by means of laser ray irradiation, thereby rendering recording and erasing of information more practical.

An information recording medium which includes a light-transmitting substrate, a recording layer formed on the substrate, the recording layer having the characteristic of changing an optical characteristic upon heating thereof, together with a protective layer having light-absorbing properties disposed over the recording layer and arranged to absorb light passing through the recording layer upon recording, in combination with a planar layer superimposed on the protective layer and capable of suppressing mechanical deformation of the recording layer.
