A factory-settable optical subassembly () used in an optical transceiver module includes an optoelectronic converter (), a top can (), and a positioning element (). The optoelectronic converter includes a housing () having an opening () for passage of light and a lens () for focusing light. The top can has a first through hole () and a coaxial second through hole () in communication with each other. The positioning element has a third through hole () and can be moved linearly to a desired position within the second through hole, where it is permanently fixed. An optical ferrule () can then be inserted through the first through hole and into the second through hole until it abuts the positioning element. An end of the optical ferrule is thereby located at a focal position for a selected wavelength of light emanated from the optoelectronic converter, given the characteristics of the lens.

Factory-settable optical subassembly used in an optical transceiver module

An optical subassembly includes an optical sleeve ( ), a lens holder ( ) having a cylindrical cavity ( ) defined therein, and an optical element ( ) received in the cavity. A stepped fixing hole ( ) is longitudinally defined through the optical sleeve, for receiving an optical connector. The lens holder includes the cavity, a lens member ( ), and a cylindrical protuberance ( ) extending from a top surface of the lens holder. The protuberance is coupled into the fixing hole to ensure precise alignment of the optical connector, an optical axis of the lens member and the optical element. The optical sleeve is readily detachable from the lens holder. Therefore, when the optical connector needs to be changed to another kind of optical connector, the original optical sleeve can be replaced with a new suitable optical sleeve. The same lens holder can continue to be used.

Optical subassembly with replaceable optical sleeve

A laser-based light source includes a laser ( ), two optical detectors ( ), a diffraction grating ( ) mounted in a can ( ), and a controlling circuit ( ). A plurality of parallel grooves ( ) is defined in a bottom face ( ) of the diffraction grating. Each groove has a depth &ldquo;d.&rdquo; A groove separation &ldquo;a&rdquo; is defined between any two adjacent grooves. A groove cycle &ldquo;b&rdquo; is defined as a sum of the distance a and a width of any one groove. A light intensity of light beams depends on the values of &ldquo;d&rdquo;, &ldquo;a&rdquo; and &ldquo;b&rdquo;. By selecting a desired duty cycle f&equals;a/b for the diffraction grating, the reflected light beams are converged into &plusmn;1 order light beams. Almost all the &plusmn;1 order light beams are collected by the optical detectors, notwithstanding variations in operational temperature. The controlling circuit receives feedback signals from the optical detectors.

Laser-based light source

A light source ( ) comprises a header ( ), electrical conductors ( ), ( ), ( ), a light sensor ( ), a laser ( ), a can ( ), a convex lens ( ), and an external control circuit ( ). A window ( ) is defined in an inclined top of the can ( ), and the convex lens ( ) is mounted within the window ( ). A convex surface of the inclined convex lens ( ) faces away from the light sensor ( ). The laser ( ) and the light sensor ( ) are separately mounted on the header ( ). The electrical conductors ( ), ( ), ( ) electrically connect with the control circuit ( ). The convex lens ( ) has a pre-determined curvature such that emitted light beams of the laser ( ) reflected from the lens ( ) converge onto the light sensor ( ). Accordingly, the reflected light beams ( ) received by the light sensor ( ) are accurately proportional to the emitted light power of the laser ( ). Thus the control circuit ( ) can precisely control the light intensity of the laser ( ) to maintain the emission power of the laser ( ) at a steady level.
