A liquid crystal display having electrodes on a single substrate. A transparent planar electrode elongated in the transverse direction is formed on the inner surface of a substrate, and an insulating film is deposited thereon. A plurality of linear electrodes, which are elongated in the longitudinal direction and either transparent or opaque, are formed on the insulating film. Potential difference between the planar and the linear electrodes generated by applying voltages to the electrodes yields an electric field. The electric field is symmetrical with respect to the longitudinal central line of the linear electrodes, and has parabolic or semi-elliptical lines of force having a center on a boundary line between the planar and the linear electrodes. The line of force on the planar and the linear electrodes and on the boundary line between the planar and the linear electrodes has the vertical and the horizontal components, and the liquid crystal molecules are re-arranged to have a twist angle and a tilt angle. The polarization of the incident light varies due to the rearrangement of the liquid crystal molecules.

Liquid crystal display having a modified electrode array

Two electrodes parallel to each other are formed on one of two substrates, homeotropic alignment films are formed on the substrates and a liquid crystal material having positive dielectric anisotropy is injected between the substrates. When a voltage is applied to the two electrodes, a parabolic electric field between the electrodes drives the liquid crystal molecules. Since the generated electric field is symmetrical with respect to the boundary-plane equal distance from each of the two electrodes, the liquid crystal molecules are symmetrically aligned with respect to the boundary-plane, and the optical characteristic is compensated in both regions divided by the boundary-plane, thereby obtaining a wide viewing angle. The electric field does not exert influences on the liquid crystal molecules on the boundary-plane since the electric field on the boundary-plane is parallel to the substrates and perpendicular to the two electrodes; and thus, it is perpendicular to the liquid crystal molecules. Here, the polarization of the light is changed while passing through the liquid crystal layer and as a result, only a part of the light passes through the polarizing plate The transmittance of the light can be varied by controlling the magnitude of voltage applied to the two electrodes. The alignment direction of the liquid crystal molecules is changed in both regions of a bent portion of the electrodes by forming the electrodes in the saw shape in a pixel or in by pixel, and the retardation of the light is compensated, thereby obtaining a wider viewing angle.

A liquid crystal display includes a first substrate having a plurality of pixels, a second substrate facing the first substrate, polarizing plates attached to outer surfaces of the two substrates, and a liquid crystal material injected into the gap between the two substrates, molecules of the liquid crystal material being initially aligned perpendicularly to the substrates. Each pixel is divided into a plurality of domains distinguished by an average alignment direction of liquid crystal molecules included therein when an electric field is applied to the liquid crystal material. On average, liquid crystal molecules located at an edge of the domains are aligned symmetrically to each other with respect to a boundary of the domains. Polarizing directions of the polarizing plates are either perpendicular or parallel to each other, but neither parallel nor perpendicular to at least one of the average alignment directions of the liquid crystal molecules of the domains.

Liquid crystal display including polarizing plate having polarizing directions neither parallel nor perpendicular to average alignment direction of molecules

Disclosed is a liquid crystal display comprising a first substrate including a first electrode; a second substrate including a second electrode, the second substrate being arranged substantially in parallel with the first substrate and with a predetermined gap therebetween; a liquid crystal layer formed by injecting liquid crystal material between the first and second substrates, long axes of liquid crystal molecules of the liquid crystal layer being arranged vertically to the first substrate and the second substrate; and first and second orientation layers formed on the first substrate and the second substrate, respectively, and providing an orientation force to the liquid crystal molecules such that the long axes of the liquid crystal molecules are slanted or twisted by 0 to 10&deg;.

Liquid crystal display with only portion of the long axes of the liquid crystal molecules are arranged in radial configuration

An in-plane switching type liquid crystal display device includes opposed first and second panels, defining a gap therebetween, the first and second panels including first and second electrodes, spaced laterally apart in the gap. A quantity of a liquid crystal material is disposed in the gap between the first and second panels, wherein a product of a refractive anisotropy of the liquid crystal material and the gap between the first and second panels is in a range between 0.36 &mgr;m and 0.45 &mgr;m. Preferably, the gap between the first and second panels is in a range between 4 &mgr;m and 5 &mgr;m, and the refractive anisotropy is in a range between 0.067 and 1.1016. Each of panels preferably has an alignment surface which is operative to align molecules of the liquid crystal material along an alignment direction, and a polarizer, attached to one of the first and second panels, selectively permits light having a polarization of 45&deg; with respect to the alignment direction to pass through the quantity of liquid crystal material. Related fabrication methods are also described.

In-plane switching type liquid crystal display devices with increased cell gap and methods of fabrication therefor

IPS-LCD having a third electrode having aperture and formed on counter substrate

A liquid crystal displays and a method of production in which a plurality of data lines are formed on an insulating substrate with a plurality of gate lines formed on the insulating substrate and arranged perpendicular to the data lines and are located at opposite sides with respect to the data lines. The first and the second common electrode lines are arranged parallel to the gate lines and divided into a plurality of bars which are located at opposite sides with respect to the data lines. A plurality of common electrodes are formed parallel to the data lines and connected to the first and the second common electrode lines. An insulating film covers the gate lines, the data lines, the first and second common electrode lines and the common electrodes. A secondary common electrode is formed on the insulating film and arranged parallel to the data lines. Moreover, the secondary common electrode overlaps edges of the data line to play a role as an electric field blocking webbing and contacts the common electrode lines located at opposite sides with respect to the data line through contact holes. A contact pattern is formed on the insulating film and connects the two gate lines located at opposite sides with respect to the data line through contact holes.
