A method and apparatus are provided for generating a code book for use in a CDMA system. The code book comprises of a plurality of vectors that are used to encode user data. An amplitude and polarity for each vector in the code book are selected to provide a reduced peak-to-average power ratio. The amplitude values can be selected to provide a reduced peak-to-average power ratio while maintaining a desired average energy per chip. The desired energy per chip can be based on the energy per chip of a CDMA system having a lower order spreading factor. Performance can be further improved by employing a first code book under a first signal-to-noise ratio condition and a second code book under a second signal-to-noise ratio condition.

Methods and apparatus for code division multiple access communication using code book that provides reduced peak-to-average power ratio

A system and method for wireless communication includes multiplexing an EUDC downlink control channel so that it is transmitted like a downlink dedicated channel (DL-DPCH). The EUDC downlink control channel can be multiplexed with the DL-DPCH by code or by both code and time. The EUDC downlink control channel may be multiplexed with a downlink dedicated physical data channel (DL-DPDCH), a downlink dedicated physical control channel (DL-DPCCH), or both. In one embodiment, the EUDC downlink control channel is multiplexed by adding a multicode channel to a current DL-DPCH and treating the EUDC downlink control channel as a dedicated channel with power control functionality.

Method for carrying downlink control information for an enhanced uplink dedicated channel

In the scheduling method of the present invention, scheduling grant messages for a user equipment are transmitted beginning in any time slot of a frame for a channel so long as the scheduling grant message does not exceed the frame. The scheduling grant message indicates user equipment is approved to transmit on an uplink dedicated channel. This downlink transmission and subsequent uplink dedicated channel transmission have a timing relationship such that no more than one user equipment will begin transmitting on a respective uplink dedicated channel at a time.

Method of scheduling on downlink and transmitting on uplink dedicated channels

In a method of transmitting control signals for uplink transmission of packet data, a control channel carrying control signal data that is shared by a plurality of users is transmitted in the downlink to the users. The shared control channel includes fields identifiable by, or specified for, different ones of the users, so that each field includes control signal data for a specified user for uplink transmission of packet data. The specified user decodes a corresponding field of the shared control channel to interpret the control signal data, and may transmit packet data in the uplink in accordance with the decoded control signal data.

In a method of transmitting control signals for uplink transmission of packet data in a communication network, control signal data related to scheduling a user for uplink transmission of packet data is transmitted over a single control channel. The single control channel may be configured based on the transmission mode the user is in for scheduling an uplink transmission from the user to the network, so that only one control channel is used, regardless of the transmission mode the user is in for scheduling the user for the uplink transmission. The control channel may be embodied as a sub-frame adapted to carry control information that is dependent based on the transmission mode the user is in for scheduling an uplink transmission from the user to the network.

In a method for aligning a plurality of physical channels for uplink transmission two or more physical channels may be aligned based on a timing offset so that the two channels are transmitted in the uplink at a time instant different than a time of uplink transmission for a third physical channel. Accordingly, the two physical channels may be code multiplexed with additional physical channels other than the third physical channel to generate a code-multiplexed signal to be used for uplink transmission. The timing offset information may be assigned to the user from a base station, for example, in order to align the two physical channels. Accordingly, an increase in peak-to-average power ratio my be avoided and/or reduced if multiplexing the two physical channels with other physical channels for uplink transmission.

A portion of power available for communicating is assigned to the channelization code based on a channel quality metric. A system includes a transmitter, and an allocation unit. The transmitter is adapted to communicate data packets. The allocation unit is adapted to assign at least one channelization code to a data packet and assign a portion of power available for communicating to the channelization code based on a channel quality metric associated with the data packet.

In the method for enhanced uplink data transmission, a transport channel for each transmission mode is independently generated. Each transport channel has an associated transmission time interval (TTI), and the generated transport channels are multiplexed on a selected TTI basis to form a composite transport channel. Enhanced uplink data transmission

A method and system for using one H-ARQ process in communication systems having a Multiple Input Multiple Output antenna system. Information to be transmitted is first coded using a particular coding scheme and having a particular base coding rate. The coded information is then divided into groups of sub-blocks of coded information. Each group of sub-blocks of coded information contains one or more sub-blocks where the number of sub-blocks in a group is determined from current channel conditions of an antenna through which the group is to be transmitted. The groups are then rate matched and modulated based on the current channel conditions and transmitted through one or more antennas. For any retransmissions, the same coded information is used and is divided into groups of sub-blocks of coded information where at least one new group is associated with one of the plurality of antennas; the number of sub-blocks of coded information in a new group is based on current channel conditions experienced by the associated one antenna. Each group of sub-blocks is again rate matched and modulated before transmission. The rate matching and modulation parameters for any group of sub-blocks are determined by the channel conditions of the antenna through which that particular group is to be transmitted.

Method and system for using hybrid ARQ in communication systems that use multiple input multiple output antenna systems

A method of data communication. The method includes initially receiving one or more channel quality information signals from each wireless unit. The channel quality information may be received in response to the transmission of one or more pilot signals. Once the channel quality information signal(s) from each wireless unit are received, the method then includes selecting one or more transmit powers and one or more transmission rates for each wireless unit. Thereafter, one or more blocks of orthogonal continuous waveforms may be transmitted over a channel to each wireless unit using the selected transmit power and selected transmission rate.

Method of power allocation and rate control in OFDMA systems

A method for controlling the flow of information on a high-speed channel between a UE and a Node B is provided. Timing of the high-speed channel is based on timing associated with a low-speed channel and a time at which a grant signal is received from the Node B. Upon receiving a grant signal, the UE adds a preselected duration of time to the timing of the low-speed channel to provide timing on the high-speed channel, where the preselected duration of time is selected to maintain substantial orthogonality between the high-speed and low-speed channels.

Method for controlling timing in a communications channel

A method for conveying signaling information of a communication system that uses MIMO antenna systems. To enable a relatively larger amount of information to be conveyed over the communication system and thus exploit the use of the MIMO antenna system, forward link signaling channels are provided where such channels contain swapping information that allow the communication system to retransmit traffic information using any one of the antenna elements of a MIMO system. The forward link signaling channels also contain channel assignment information that indicate which particular groups of channels are available for use by particular users of the communication system. To further accommodate for the relatively larger amount of information being conveyed over the communication system, the format of the reverse link signaling information is modified using any one or any combination of the following three mechanisms: (1) reverse signaling link information is time division multiplexed; (2) the reverse link information is modulated at relatively higher order modulation; (3) additional channels are provided for the reverse link information.

Signaling and control mechanisms in MIMO harq schemes for wireless communication systems

A method includes generating a received signal vector from a signal received over a channel. The received signal vector includes a plurality of symbols encoded in accordance with a block code having a structure. A channel matrix estimated for the channel is transformed based on the structure of the block code to generate an aggregate channel matrix. The symbols are processed using the aggregate channel matrix. A system includes a front end unit configured to generate the received signal vector, a channel estimation unit configured to estimate the channel matrix, and a processing unit configured to generate the aggregate channel matrix and process the symbols using the aggregate channel matrix.

A wireless data communication system includes a high speed dedicated physical control channel (EU-DPCCH) used with transmissions from a mobile device to support an uplink high speed data channel. In one example the EU-DPCCH has a sub frame structure that is the same as an associated dedicated data channel and a fixed spreading factor. The EU-DPCCH allows communicating control information from the mobile device such as a pilot reference, hybrid automatic repeat request information, and backlog information regarding a buffer of the mobile device.
