A light modulating device is disclosed herein. The light modulating device is applied to a sunroof and/or glass of an automobile. In some embodiments, a light modulating device configured to be disposed in a sunroof of an automobile includes a light modulation film layer, wherein the light modulation film layer includes a first anisotropic substrate, a second anisotropic substrate, and a liquid crystal layer, wherein each of the first and second anisotropic substrates has a first surface, wherein the first surfaces of the first and second anisotropic substrates face each other; wherein the liquid crystal layer is disposed between the first surfaces of the first and second anisotropic substrates, and wherein a slow axis of the first or second anisotropic substrate is disposed parallel to a width direction of the automobile.

Light modulating device and automobile

A light modulating device is disclosed herein. In some embodiments, a light modulating device includes a first substrate, a second substrate, a light modulation layer, and a retardation film, wherein each of the first and second substrates has a first surface and a second surface, wherein the first and second surfaces are disposed opposite to each other, wherein the first surfaces of the first and second substrates face each other, wherein the light modulation layer is disposed between the first and second substrates, wherein the retardation film is formed on the second surface of the first substrate or the second substrate, and wherein the retardation film has an in-plane phase difference in a range of 100 nm to 300 nm for light having a wavelength of 550 nm. The light modulating device can be control omnidirectional light leakage in a black mode while having excellent optical properties and mechanical properties.

Light modulating device

An optical device is disclosed herein. In some embodiments, an optical device includes a first outer substrate, a second outer substrate, a liquid crystal element positioned between the first outer substrate and the second outer substrate, a first intermediate layer between the first outer substrate and the liquid crystal element, and a second intermediate layer between the second outer substrate and the liquid crystal element, wherein a sum of total thicknesses of the first and second intermediate layers is 800 μm or more, and wherein the liquid crystal element includes a first base layer, a second base layer, a liquid crystal layer between the first base layer and the second base layer, a pressure-sensitive adhesive layer between the first base layer and the liquid crystal layer, and a spacer to maintain a gap between the first and second base layers.

Optical device

A light modulation device is disclosed herein. In some embodiments, a light modulation device includes a first polymer film substrate having a first surface and a second surface, an adhesive layer or pressure-sensitive adhesive layer disposed on the first surface of the first polymer film substrate, a second polymer film substrate having a first surface and a second surface, a liquid crystal alignment film disposed on the first surface of the second polymer film substrate, a −C plate; and a light modulation layer containing a liquid crystal compound. The light modulation device has excellent optical properties including transmittance-variable characteristics through characteristic control and proper arrangement of a compensation film, and being applicable to various uses by controlling inclination angle light leakage in a black mode.

Light modulation device

An optical device is disclosed herein. In some embodiments, an optical device includes a first outer substrate, a second outer substrate, a liquid crystal element film positioned between the first and second outer substrates, intermediate layers positioned between the first outer substrate and the liquid crystal element film and between the liquid crystal element film and the second outer substrate, respectively, wherein a sum of the total thicknesses of the intermediate layers is 1,600 μm or more. The optical device can secure structural stability and good quality uniformity by maintaining the cell gap of the liquid crystal element film properly, having excellent attachment force between the upper substrate and the lower substrate, and minimizing defects such as pressing or crowding in the bonding process of the outer substrates.

A light modulating device is disclosed herein. In some embodiments, a light modulating device includes a first substrate, a second substrate, and a liquid crystal layer, wherein the liquid crystal layer is disposed between the first and second substrates, and wherein the light modulating device satisfies Equation 1: T≤3×T, wherein, Tis an initial transmittance measured after vertically orienting the liquid crystal layer and placing it between orthogonal polarizers, and Tis a transmittance measured after heating the liquid crystal layer showing the transmittance of Tat 100° C. for 5 minutes, and then placing it between the orthogonal polarizers. The light modulating device can stably maintain designed optical properties even after an encapsulation process. The light modulating device can also stably maintain the orientation state of a light modulation layer while effectively securing adhesive force between upper and lower substrates.

A transmittance-variable device is provided in the present application. The present application provides a transmittance-variable device, which can be applied to various applications without causing problems such as a crosstalk phenomenon, a rainbow phenomenon or a mirroring phenomenon, while having excellent transmittance-variable characteristics.

Transmittance-variable device

The present application relates to a polarization-variable element. The polarization-variable element of the present application has a fast response speed and excellent variable characteristics of polarization degree and transmittance. Such polarization-variable element may be applied to various applications including various architectural or vehicle materials requiring transmittance-variable characteristics, or eyewear such as goggles for augmented reality experience sports, sunglasses or helmets.

Polarization-variable element

A pressure-sensitive adhesive and a liquid crystal cell including the same are disclosed herein. In some embodiments, a pressure-sensitive adhesive having a storage elastic modulus of 700 kPa or more at a temperature of 25° C. and a frequency of 6 rad/sec, and a gel fraction of 35% or more, wherein the gel fraction is defined by Equation 1:×100  [Equation 1]wherein, A is an initial mass (g) of the pressure-sensitive adhesive, B is a mass (g) of an insoluble content after the pressure-sensitive adhesive is immersed in a solvent at 60° C. for 24 hours and then dried at 150° C. for 30 minutes. The press-sensitive adhesive is advantageous for implementation into a flexible element between upper and lower substrates of a liquid crystal cell, and providing excellent electro-optical properties and appearance uniformity by minimizing defects.

Pressure-sensitive adhesive and liquid crystal cell

A method for manufacturing a light modulation device is provided. The light modulation device is capable of removing defects such as orientation irregularities. The light modulation device further improves the orientation state in the light modulation device that adjusts orientation of a liquid crystal compound or the like with a liquid crystal alignment film and a pressure-sensitive adhesive layer or adhesive layer.

Manufacturing method of light modulation device

An optical device is disclosed herein. In some embodiments, a optical device includes a liquid crystal element having a top surface, a bottom surface, and sides separating the top surface and the bottom surface, and an outer layer surrounding the sides of the liquid crystal element, wherein the liquid crystal element comprises a first base layer, a second base layer, a liquid crystal layer positioned between the first base layer and the second base layer, a pressure-sensitive adhesive layer positioned between the first base layer and the liquid crystal layer, and a spacer to maintain a gap between the first base layer and the second base layer, wherein the optical device satisfies Equation 1:−2×0.4≤1−2≤2×0.4  [Equation 1]wherein, T1 is a thickness of the outer layer, and T2 is a thickness of the liquid crystal element.

A light modulation device is disclosed herein. The light modulation device can properly maintain a cell gap by controlling the shape and arrangement of spacers and the like, and is applicable for various applications by effectively controlling omnidirectional light leakage in a black mode, while having excellent optical properties, including transmittance-variable characteristics and haze characteristics, and the like.

A substrate and a method for producing the same are disclosed herein. In some embodiments, a substrate includes a base layer, a black layer formed on the base layer, and column spacers formed on the black layer, wherein a loss rate of spacers measured by a peel test is 15% or less. The substrate can have excellent adhesiveness of the spacer to the base layer or the black layer and ensuring appropriate darkening properties. The method can effectively produce such a substrate without adverse effects such as occurrence of foreign materials without separate treatment such as heat treatment.

Substrate

A coating composition, a method for manufacturing a substrate using the same, and an optical device are provided. The method for manufacturing the substrate provides the substrate having excellent performance, as the substrate has fixed spacers on its surface by using a single layer in which nanoparticles and spacers are dispersed in an alignment film to reduce processes and cost. The optical device may be manufactured by such method.
