A method of making a shaped abrasion-resistant multilayer optical film includes providing a curable composition comprising, based on the total weight of components a) to d) components: a) 87 to 96 weight percent of urethane (meth)acrylate compound having an average (meth)acrylate functionality of 2 to 4.8; b) 2 to 12.5 weight percent of (meth)acrylate monomer having a (meth)acrylate functionality of 1 to 2, wherein the (meth)acrylate monomer does not comprise a urethane (meth)acrylate compound; optionally c) 0.5 to 2 weight percent of silicone (meth)acrylate; and d) optional effective amount of photoinitiator. The curable composition is coated onto an MOF. Optionally, the curable composition to is at least partially dried. Next, the curable composition or the at least partially dried curable composition is at least partially cured to provide an abrasion-resistant multilayer optical film. Lastly, the abrasion-resistant multilayer optical film is thermoformed using a female mold having a mold surface. At least a portion of the mold surface has a radius of curvature of 58 to 76 mm and a maximum depth of 13 to 20 mm.

Thermoformed abrasion-resistant multilayer optical film and method of making the same

An optical assembly including an optical element insert molded directly onto an optical stack is provided. The optical stack includes an optical film and may include a liner with the optical film being disposed between the optical element and the liner. The liner, if included, is removable from the optical film without substantial damage to the optical film. An outermost layer of the optical film may be diffusion bonded to a major surface of the optical element. The optical film includes a protective coating having an average thickness of no more than 30 micrometers. The protective coating includes an at least partially cured composition. The composition includes 70 to 96 weight percent of urethane (meth)acrylate compound having an average (meth)acrylate functionality of 2 to 9.5, and 2 to 20 weight percent of (meth)acrylate monomer having a (meth)acrylate functionality of 1 to 2.

Optical assembly with protective coating

A curable composition comprises: a) 91 to 98.2 weight percent of: (i) at least one polymerizable compound containing at least one carbamylene group; or (ii) at least one polyurethane precursor system; and b) 0.2 to 9 weight percent of alpha alumina particles having a particle size distribution with a Dv50 of from 0.1 to 1 micron, wherein the weight percentages of a) and b) are based upon the total amount of a) and b). Cured compositions and their use in thermoforming are also disclosed.

Compositions including alpha-alumina particles and methods of their use

Provided are aqueous primer compositions and methods that can be useful for protecting primary structures on an aircraft. The primer composition can contain a thermosetting resin dispersion in water, a coalescent solvent in which the thermosetting resin is at least partially soluble, a first curative that is substantially water-insoluble, and a second curative that is substantially water-soluble. Optionally, the primer composition further contains an epoxy silane, where the primer composition is substantially free of any liquid or water-soluble curatives containing a primary or secondary amine group.

Aqueous primer composition and related methods

Systems including one or both of a light emitter or a light receiver and an optical filter adjacent one or both of the light emitter or the light receive are described. The optical filter includes a wavelength selective scattering layer that scatters near-infrared light less than visible light. The present disclosure provides an aqueous dispersion. The aqueous dispersion includes a) water; b) a surfactant having at least one ethylenically unsaturated group; and c) polyester particles dispersed in the water. The polyester particles include a water-insoluble polyester having a weight average molecular weight of 20 kiloDaltons or greater, and the polyester particles have an average diameter that is submicron in size. Further, the present disclosure provides a method of making the aqueous dispersion. The method includes a) dissolving a water-insoluble polyester in a water-immiscible solvent to form a polyester solution; b) combining the polyester solution with an aqueous solution including water and a surfactant; and c) removing at least a portion of the water-immiscible solvent to form the aqueous dispersion including polyester particles dispersed in the water. The present disclosure also provides a photopolymerizable composition including a) water; b) a surfactant; c) polyester particles dispersed in the water; d) a photoinitiator; e) at least one ethylenically unsaturated monomer dispersed in the water; and f) an optional polymerization inhibitor. The present disclosure also provides coatings and articles prepared from the aqueous dispersion or photopolymerizable composition.

Aqueous dispersions including polyester particles, photopolymerizable compositions, articles, and methods

A dispersion, a resin containing the dispersion and polymer film formed from the resin are disclosed. The dispersion includes an infrared light absorbing pigment including organo-metallic particles being less than 1.5 micrometer or less than one micrometer in size. The dispersion also includes a dispersant including phosphorus and a polyol.

Inductively curable composition

Methods of compounding nanoparticles with a resin, e.g., a curable resin and one or more surface modifying agents are described. The methods use wet milling technology, including both continuous and batch milling processes, and can be used to functionalize the nanoparticles and disperse the functionalized nanoparticles into the resin system in a single process. Methods of compounding curable resin systems containing reactive diluents are also disclosed.

Nanoparticle dispersion, compositions containing the same, and articles made therefrom

Nanoparticle compositions including calcite and a surface-modifying agent bonded to the calcite are described. The surface-modifying agent includes a binding group bonded to the calcite and a compatiblizing segment. The compatiblizing segment includes at least one of a polyethylene oxide, a polypropylene oxide, a polyester, a polyamide, or a combination thereof. The composition includes less than 2 wt. % solvents and/or resins. Methods of preparing nanoparticle compositions are also described.

A composite material includes a plurality of fibers embedded in a metal matrix. The composite material further includes a plurality of particles disposed in the metal matrix. At least 25% of the fibers contact or are spaced less than 0.2 micrometers from an adjacent fiber within the metal matrix.

Antireflective films are described comprising a light transmissive substrate and a low refractive index layer disposed on the light transmissive substrate. The low refractive index layer comprises the reaction product of polymerizable resin composition comprising at least 20 wt-% fumed silica. In one embodiment, the polymerizable resin is ethylenically unsaturated. In a favored embodiment, the low refractive index layer increases in porosity from the light transmissive substrate interface to an opposing porous surface.

The aerogel composites include monolithic aerogel material located in cavities between a base layer and a structured layer that is bonded to the base layer.
