A centrifugal compressor for a turbocharger includes an inlet-adjustment mechanism in an air inlet for the compressor, operable to move between a closed position, an open position, and a super-open position. The compressor also includes a ported shroud system. The inlet-adjustment mechanism includes a plurality of blades disposed about the air inlet and movable radially inwardly and outwardly for defining the various positions. In the closed position, the effective diameter of air inlet is reduced and the blades block flow through the ported shroud system. In the open position, the blades still block the ported shroud but the effective inlet diameter is increased relative to the closed position. In the super-open position, the blades unblock the ported shroud so that an additional amount of flow can pass through the ported shroud, thereby shifting the compressor's choke flow line to higher flow rates.

Various embodiments of ported-shroud centrifugal compressors are described. In some embodiments a wall of a compressor housing defines a pair of bulb-shaped hollow spaces or 'bulbs', one located proximate the compressor wheel and the other spaced upstream from the wheel, and having a connection therebetween. The downstream bulb is connected to the main flow path of the compressor by a port slot through the wall. The upstream bulb is connected to the inlet area of the main flow path by a passage through the wall. The bulbs can provide acoustic wave cancellation through multiple internal reflections in various directions. In one embodiment, the upstream bulb has a second passage connected to it, facing axially upstream, for receiving a portion of the total flow in a choked-flow operating regime, and conducting that portion through the upstream bulb, through the connection to the downstream bulb, and through the port slot into the main flow path.

Low-noise ported-shroud compressor for a turbocharger

A centrifugal compressor for compressing a fluid comprises a compressor wheel having a plurality of circumferentially spaced blades, and a compressor housing in which the compressor wheel is mounted. The compressor housing includes an inlet duct through which the fluid enters in an axial direction and is led by the inlet duct into the compressor wheel, and an inner surface located radially adjacent the tips of the blades. A bleed port is defined in the inner surface of the compressor housing at a location intermediate the leading and trailing edges of the blades, for bleeding off a bleed portion of the fluid, the bleed port leading to a recirculation flow channel that feeds the bleed portion back into the inlet duct. Highly cambered vanes are disposed in the recirculation flow channel for turning the bleed portion to take out and in some cases reverse the swirl in the bleed portion.

Centrifugal compressor with surge control, and associated method

A housing is incorporated as part of a compressor having blades that impart to a fluid a momentum along a main gas flow direction and a swirl. The housing includes a channel that has at least one channel wall and defines an axis substantially aligned with the main gas flow direction. The channel is configured to duct at least some of the fluid. The channel wall defines an internal cavity that extends axially within the channel wall. A bleed passage connects and provides fluid communication between the channel and the cavity. The channel wall defines a plurality of injection passages providing fluid communication between the cavity and the channel at a location spaced in a direction opposite the main gas flow direction from both the bleed passage and the blades. The injection passages have a portion configured to direct fluid from the cavity into the channel with a component along the main gas flow direction and a component opposed to the swirl.

Compressor and compressor housing

A centrifugal compressor for compressing a fluid comprises a compressor wheel having a plurality of circumferentially spaced blades, and a compressor housing in which the compressor wheel is mounted. The compressor housing includes an inlet duct through which the fluid enters in an axial direction and is led by the inlet duct into the compressor wheel, and a wheel shroud located radially adjacent the tips of the blades. A bleed port is defined in the wheel shroud at a location intermediate the leading and trailing edges of the blades for bleeding off a bleed portion of the fluid being compressed by the compressor wheel. A converging injection nozzle is defined in the duct wall upstream of the leading edges of the blades for injecting the bleed portion of the fluid back into the main fluid flow stream approaching the compressor wheel.

The present invention provides an exhaust gas recirculation mixer for use with a long route (i.e., low pressure) EGR system adapted for use in a turbocharged internal combustion engine. The mixer comprises an outer wall and an inner wall defining a cavity therebetween, a chamber defined within the inner wall, an exhaust gas inlet on the outer wall, and apertures of varying dimensions disposed within the inner wall so that exhaust gas enters the mixer in a controlled flow through the exhaust gas inlet, through the cavity, and through the apertures into the chamber for mixture with ambient air.
