A robotic catheter system may include a flexible catheter having a proximal end, a distal end, and an articulating portion at the distal end, it may further include a sensor coupled with the flexible catheter at or near the distal end, a visual display for displaying an image of at least part of the flexible catheter, a processor for generating a virtual indicator displayed on the image of the flexible catheter, where the virtual indicator indicates a direction of articulation and/or an amount of articulation of the articulating portion of the catheter, and a controller coupled with the proximal end of the flexible catheter to receive a user input and articulate the articulating portion of the catheter in response to the user input.

Systems and devices for catheter driving instinctiveness

A method of detecting a tool being received in a medical system, the method including receiving, in a tool recognition assembly having a first reader with a first detection zone, the tool having a first target. The method also includes acquiring first sensor data from the first reader for the first detection zone and detecting an indication of an absence of the first target when the first sensor data is within a first pre-determined threshold range and logging the absence indication. The method also includes creating an insertion signature associated with the tool being received in the tool recognition assembly by combining, in a chronological sequence, the absence and presence indications from the first reader. The method further includes comparing the insertion signature to a predetermined set of model insertion signatures and determining a characteristic of the tool being received in the tool recognition assembly based on the comparing.

For position sensors, e.g., a fiber-based system, that build a shape of an elongated member, such as a catheter, using a sequence of small orientation measurements, a small error in orientation at the proximal end of the sensor will cause large error in position at distal points on the fiber. Exemplary methods and systems are disclosed, which may provide full or partial registration along the length of the sensor to reduce the influence of the measurement error. Additional examples are directed to applying selective filtering at a proximal end of the elongated member to provide a more stable base for distal measurements and thereby reducing the influence of measurement errors.

A robotic surgical system with an input device has two operational modes by which both steerable and non-steerable elongate instruments can be effectively controlled, such as steerable catheters which can move in at least three orthogonal axes and non-steerable guidewires which can move via axial insertion/retraction or axial rotation. The robotic surgical system may include mapping schemes and haptic feedback to enhance the functionality, operation and ease of use of the input device when controlling non-steerable elongate instruments such as guidewires.

User input devices for controlling manipulation of guidewires and catheters

A robotic system comprises a robotic arm and a medical instrument. The robotic arm comprises a series of linkages connected by a series of joints and one or more instrument drivers coupled to a distal end of the series of linkages. The medical instrument comprises an elongated shaft extending between a distal portion and a proximal portion, an instrument base connected to the proximal portion of the elongated shaft, the instrument base including an attachment interface configured to facilitate attachment to the robotic arm, a non-transitory computer readable medium storing a compression compensation parameter, and a pull wire connected to the distal portion of the elongated shaft, the pull wire extending along the elongated shaft between the distal portion and a drive input positioned at the instrument base, the drive input configured to actuate the pull wire to cause movement of the elongated shaft.

Systems and methods for medical instrument compression compensation

A device may operate a guide wire and be operable by a single operator digit. The device may include an insertion control device for advancing the guide wire in a forward and in a reverse direction and along a longitudinal axis of the guide wire; and a rotary device for rolling a guide wire about the longitudinal axis. A robotic instrument driver may be operatively coupled to the device and configured to control axial movement of the guide wire along the longitudinal axis according to input received from the insertion control device and to control rotational movement of the guide wire according to input received from the rotary device.

Integrated catheter and guide wire controller

Systems and methods for driving a flexible medical instrument to a target in an anatomical space with robotic assistance are described herein. The flexible instrument may have a tracking sensor embedded therein. An associated robotic control system may be provided, which is configured to register the flexible instrument to an anatomical image using data from the tracking sensor and identify one or more movements suitable for navigating the instrument towards an identified target. In some embodiments, the robotic control system drives or assists in driving the flexible instrument to the target.

Robot-assisted driving systems and methods

Certain aspects relate to systems and techniques for compensating for compression in elongated shafts of medical instruments. Medical instruments can include elongated shafts that may experience compression when articulated. The medical instruments can be attached to instrument positioning devices that are configured to move the medical instruments to compensate for this compression. For example, an instrument positioning device can advance a medical instrument to compensate for compression in an elongated shaft of the medical instrument. In some instances, the amount of compression is determined using a compression compensation parameter. The compression compensation parameter can be determined during a calibration process of the medical instrument.

A guidewire manipulation system may include a cylindrical drum, having a cylindrical outer drum surface with a helical groove for housing a flexible guidewire and an anchoring mechanism for attaching the flexible guidewire to the drum. The system may also include an outer shell or belt disposed around the drum, forming an opening through which the flexible guidewire exits. The system may also include a first actuator coupled with the drum for rotating the drum about a first axis, and a second actuator coupled with the drum for rotating the system about a second axis.
