Disclosed herein are stabilized kaolin slurries comprising a kaolin comprising no more than about 80% by weight of particles having an equivalent spherical diameter of less than 2 microns and at least one stabilizer, wherein the stabilized kaolin slurry has a 28-day pour test result of at least about 80% poured. Also disclosed are methods of making such stabilized kaolin slurries.

Stabilized kaolin slurry and methods for improving kaolin slurry stability

The present invention provides a micro-controller, a processing method and device for power line carrier signal reception, where the method includes: an analog mixer mixes received power line carrier signals, an analog filter filters the mixed power line carrier signals, an analog-to-digital converter converts the filtered signals, a digital mixer mixes converted signals, a digital filter filters the mixed signals and a digital demodulator demodulates the filtered signals to obtain base band data. The present invention also provides a corresponding device and a micro-controller including the device. The technical solution of the present invention can modulate the carrier signals of any frequency to a fixed frequency through two-stage frequency mixing, so that demodulation of power line carrier signals with any frequency is possible.

A method of treating a kaolin particulate material to improve one or more of its properties by removal of impurity particles therein which includes: producing a dispersed aqueous suspension of a kaolin particulate material containing at least 0.1% by weight, based on the dry weight of the kaolin particulate material of separable particulate impurity; diluting said dispersed aqueous suspension by adding a diluent thereto; adding a selective flocculation polymer to the diluted suspension; allowing the suspension containing the polymer to separate in a selective flocculation separator into layers comprising a flocculated product layer and a deflocculated impurity layer containing the separable impurity; and extracting the separated layers from the separator, wherein at least a portion of said deflocculated impurity layer is recirculated for use as at least a portion of the aforementioned diluent.

Method of treating an aqueous suspension of kaolin

The present invention relates to a kaolin composition having improved physical properties, for example, for use in the production of paper products. The composition can comprise kaolin having a shape factor of at least about 20. The kaolin can have a particle size distribution such that at least about 94% by weight of the kaolin can have an esd of less than about 2 &#x3bc;m and/or at least about 80% by weight of the kaolin can have an esd of less than 1 &#x3bc;m. The amount of the kaolin having an esd of less than about 0.25 &#x3bc;m can range from about 25% to about 60% by weight. The Hercules viscosity of the kaolin product is less than 4000 rpm at 18 dynes at 63% solids and less than 1500 rpm at 18 dynes at 69% solids when measured using the 'A' bob. The present invention also relates to an improved method for making the kaolin product from sedimentary kaolin.

Disclosed herein are a method of reductively bleaching a mineral slurry comprising adding in the mineral slurry an effective amount of a formamidine sulfinic acid (FAS) and an effective amount of a borohydride to reductively bleach the mineral slurry, compositions comprising a mineral slurry, a FAS, and a borohydride, and final products comprising a mineral obtained by the method disclosed herein.

The present invention relates to a hydrous kaolin product having improved optical properties, for example, when used in the production of paper products. The present invention comprises an improved barrier coating for paper and a method of making the coated paper. The present invention also comprises an improved method from making filled and coated paper products. The present invention uses a composition comprising kaolin having a shape factor of at least about 70:1, such as at least about 80:1 or at least about 100:1.

Hyperplaty clays and their use in paper coating and filling, methods for making same, and paper products having improved brightness

The present invention provides an improved method of beneficiating and dewatering kaolin clays. The product of the improved process is a brightened, dewatered kaolin, suitable for use in pigments and paper coating compositions. The improved beneficiation process provides refined kaolin for pigments and other purposes of the same or better quality as prior art processes, but with the use of fewer steps and materials, at significant cost and environmental savings.

Integrated process for simultaneous beneficiation, leaching, and dewatering of kaolin clay suspension

A paper coating pigment manufactured from kaolin crude containing minor amounts of minerals is used in lightweight coated and ultra-lightweight coated applications. The pigments comprise a phyllosilicate assemblage of minerals that yield a final pigment MgO content ranging between 0.04 to 0.3 weight percent and a K O content ranging between 0.12 and 0.8 weight percent based on the dry weight of the kaolin crude. The mica in the pigment product is 1.0% to 6.7% by weight, and smectite is 1.2% to 9.1% by weight of the kaolin. The presence of these weight percentages can be identified by a shape factor of 15 or greater. The viscous clay content of the feed to produce the pigment product is between 70 and 100 weight percent based on the dry weight of the kaolin clay. The pigment has a shape factor ranging between 35 and 60 or greater, and greater than 80% by weight of the particle are less than 2 microns, and greater than 12% are less than 0.25 microns.

Kaolin clay pigments, their preparation and use

A novel clay pigment, the manufacture thereof and the use of the pigment in the coating of lightweight groundwood paper are disclosed. The kaolin clay particles initially have a shape factor between less than 10 and a particle size distribution where between 30 to 60% by weight is less than 2 microns and 20% by weight is less than 0.25 micron e.s.d. This clay is subjected to attrition grinding to produce clay particles having a shape factor between 13 and 18 and then classified to produce a particle size distribution where 80 to 90% by weight are less than 2 microns and 20% by weight are less than 0.25 micron. These pigments have a G.E. brightness ranging from 88 to 92; are deficient in ultra-fine particles; are fluid at a high solids concentration greater than 70%, and have a low shear Brookfield viscosity below 500 cps and a high shear Hercules viscosity of 18 dyne-cm above 200 rpm when using an &ldquo;A&rdquo; bob.

Preparation and use of high brightness kaolin pigments

Paper coating composition comprising an engineered kaolin pigment containing stacks and platelets of unground coarse particles where greater than 96% by weight is less than 5 microns, of which some kaolinite books or stacks are concentrated in the greater than 1 micron size fraction; 88% to 95% by weight is less than 2 microns; 65% to 85% by weight is less than 1 micron; and 15% to 25% by weight is less than 0.25 micron. A first embodiment comprises particles with a shape factor Ad between 7 and 9 which represents a significant number of stacks and some platelets. A second embodiment comprises particles with a shape factor of 11 or 12 which represents the presence of some stacks with a majority of platelets. The kaolin clay pigments form clay-water slurries of 69% solids or greater. As a coating, the composition gives a G. E. brightness between 88 and 94. The engineered pigment is processed so that the desired shape factor is met, which shape factor is equated to the aspect ratio or morphology of the pigment.

Engineered kaolin pigment composition for paper coating

A kaolin clay pigment comprises a coarse kaolin clay or a blend of a coarse kaolin clay with a fine kaolin clay. The coarse kaolin clay is a delaminated and defined pigment product with an overall shape factor greater than about 12. If the coarse kaolin clay is fluid at about 65% to about 75% solids, then it is used by itself as the kaolin pigment. If it is not fluid, it is blended with a fine kaolin clay in amounts ranging from about 0.1% to about 30.0% by weight of the blend. The coarse kaolin clay fraction has a Hinckley Crystallinity Index greater than about 0.6 and the fine kaolin clay has a Hinckley Crystallinity Index less than about 0.5. The pigment has a G.E. brightness of about 90.5 and a particle size distribution such that at least about 90% by weight of the particles has an e.s.d. less than about 2 &mgr;m and about 30% by weight of the particles has an e.s.d. less than about 0.25 microns. At about 65% to about 75% solids, the Hercules viscosity is greater than 250 rpm at about 18 dynes and when used in a coating formulation, exhibits improved sheet brightness, sheet gloss, sheet opacity and print gloss.
