Organosilane condensates are described as well as their use in coating compositions, processes for making them and process for applying the coating compositions. The organosilane condensates can be formed from the hydrolysis of at least one medium to long chain trialkoxy silane compound, an amino silane and optionally one or more additional reactants. Coating compositions containing the organosilane condensates can provide coatings having improved scratch and mar resistance and can have excellent recoat adhesion.

Acrylic polymers, 1K coating compositions including the same, and multilayer coating systems including a topcoat layer formed from the 1K coating compositions are provided herein. In an embodiment, a 1K coating composition includes an acrylic polymer having a nominal Tg of at least 25&#xb0; C. and a melamine crosslinker. The acrylic polymer includes a free radical-polymerized backbone and pendant chains bonded thereto. A first pendant chain of the acrylic polymer includes a first segment and a second segment. The first segment includes an ester linkage and a secondary hydroxyl group. The second segment is connected to the first segment and includes an ester linkage and a branched hydrocarbon chain. Self-assembled silica condensates are described as well as their use in coating compositions. The self-assembled silica condensates can be formed from the hydrolysis of medium to long chain trialkoxy silane compounds. Coating compositions containing the self-assembled silica condensates can provide coatings having improved scratch and mar resistance and can have excellent recoat adhesion.

Disclosed herein is a surface active adhesion promoting agent and a coating composition comprising the surface active adhesion promoting agent. The adhesion promoting agent is a blocked isocyanate functional siloxane containing material. Addition of small amount of the adhesion promoting agent to a coating composition, especially clearcoat compositions, helps to provide adhesion to a variety of materials that may be subsequently applied to the coating composition.

A method for producing a multilayer two-tone finish on a substrate such as an automobile or truck body or parts thereof. The method includes the steps of applying two different primers to a substrate, applying an accent color to a portion of the substrate and baking the applied coatings. The accent area is then masked and a main color is applied to the unmasked portion of the substrate. The mask is then removed from the accent color area, a clearcoat is applied to the applied main and accent colors and the substrate is baked to dry and cure the applied coating compositions.
