An electronic device may include a display having an array of display pixels and having display control circuitry that controls the operation of the display. The display control circuitry may adaptively adjust the spectral characteristics of display light emitted from the display to achieve a desired effect on the human circadian system. For example, the display control circuitry may adjust the spectral characteristics of blue light emitted from the display based on the time of day such that a user's exposure to the display light may result in a circadian response similar to that which would be experienced in natural light. The spectral characteristics of blue light emitted from the display may be adjusted by adjusting the relative maximum power levels provided to blue pixels in the display or by shifting the peak wavelength associated with blue light emitted from the display.

Displays with adaptive spectral characteristics

A display may have an array of pixels. Each pixel may have a light-emitting diode such as an organic light-emitting diode. The organic light-emitting diodes may each have an anode that is coupled to a thin-film transistor pixel circuit for controlling the anode. Transparent windows may be formed in the display. The windows may be formed by replacing subpixels in some of the pixels with transparent windows. When subpixels are replaced by transparent windows, adjacent subpixels may be overdriven to compensate for lost light from the replaced subpixels. Adjacent subpixels may also be enlarged to help compensate for lost light. An array of electrical components such as an array of light sensors may be aligned with the transparent windows and may be used to measure light passing through the transparent windows.

Display with embedded components and subpixel windows

A display may have a first stage such as a color liquid crystal display stage and a second stage such as a monochromatic liquid crystal display stage that are coupled in tandem so that light from a backlight passes through both stages. The pixel pitch of the second stage may be greater than the pixel pitch of the first stage to ease alignment tolerances and reduce image processing complexity. The first stage may be provided with straight black masking strips, whereas the second stage may be provided with angled zigzagging black masking strips. The angle of the zigzagging black masking strips and the ratio of the pixel pitch of the second stage to that of the first stage may be selected to maximize optical transmittance while minimizing Moire effects.

Systems and methods for operating a display by dynamically determining a refresh rate for the display. In certain implementations, a processor determines a number of pixels having medium grayscale levels from a histogram for the image. If the number does not exceed a threshold, the processor sets a refresh rate for the display to a first refresh rate. In certain implementations, if the number exceeds a threshold, the processor may set the refresh rate for the display to a second refresh rate. Moreover, the first refresh rate may be lower than the second threshold. In some implementations, the image may be analyzed by subdividing the image into blocks and determining a refresh rate based on grayscale levels or distributions in the blocks. Based on the analysis of the blocks, a corresponding refresh rate may be selected.

Content dependent display variable refresh rate

A layer of liquid crystal material may be interposed between display layers. The display layers may include thin-film transistor circuitry having subpixel electrodes for applying electric fields to subpixel portions of the layer of liquid crystal material. Subpixels of different colors may have different shapes and may have different liquid crystal layer thicknesses. These subpixel differences may be configured to slow the switching speed of subpixels of a certain color relative to other subpixels to reduce color motion blur when an object is moved across a black or colored background. The subpixels may have chevron shapes. Subpixels of a first color may have chevron shapes that are less bent than subpixels of second and third colors. In configurations with varying liquid crystal layer thicknesses, the subpixels of the first color may have thicker liquid crystal layers than the subpixels of the second and third colors.

Liquid crystal display with color motion blur compensation structures

One embodiment describes an electronic display. The electronic display includes display driver circuitry that displays at least a first image frame and a second image frame on the electronic device using a first display pixel and a second display pixel. The electronic display also includes touch sensing circuitry that detects user interaction with the electronic display. A timing controller of the electronic display determines at least a first insertion time for a first intra-frame pause for the first image frame and a second insertion time for a second intra-frame pause for the second image frame. The first and second intra-frame pauses are periods where the display driver circuitry is pauses rendering of image data to allow the touch sensing circuitry to detect user interaction. The insertion times for the first and second intra-frame pauses are varied from one another. The timing controller inserts the first intra-frame pause during rendering of the first image frame at the first insertion time and inserts the second intra-frame pause during rendering of the second image frame at the second insertion time.
