An apparatus can include a display backlight light source configured to emit light. The apparatus can include an infrared and visible light conversion layer optically coupled to the display backlight light source. The infrared and visible light conversion layer can convert light from the display backlight light source to infrared light and at least some visible light to emit the infrared light along with the at least some visible light. The apparatus can include an optical shutter layer optically coupled to the display backlight light source. The optical shutter layer can include a plurality of optical pixel shutters that shutter light from the backlight light source.

Apparatus with visible and infrared light emitting display

Disclosed are a system and method for detecting a gesture performed by a user of a device. The device includes a screen having a backlight as with a liquid-crystal type display or which provides its own illumination as with a light-emitting diode type display. The device is programmed to emit a detectable optical signal from one or more distinct zones of the display. The device further includes an optical receiver for detecting any reflections of the emitted detectable optical signal. When a user's hand is located in proximity to the device display, the reflections of the detectable optical signal from that appendage are detected by the optical receiver and are used by the device to determine the presence and direction of travel of the user hand, signifying a user gesture. The distinct zones of the backlight may consist of a single zone, and the optical receiver may comprise multiple receivers.

Gesture-sensitive display

In one embodiment, a method for controlling a liquid crystal display (LCD) is provided. The method receives a first light from a light source structure at a light emitting layer and emits from the light emitting layer a first color component, a second color component, and a third color component. The method then receives a second light through a first polarizer layer of a first polarization state positioned above the light emitting layer, a liquid crystal layer positioned above the first polarizer layer, and a second polarizer layer of a second polarization state positioned above the liquid crystal layer and converts the second light into the first color component, the second component, and the third color component in the light emitting layer. An intensity of the first light is dynamically controlled based on the converting of the second light.

An electronic device for detecting presence and motion includes a housing, a first infrared ('IR') sensor, and a second IR sensor. The housing includes a first corner having a first plurality of openings formed thereon, and a second corner having a second plurality of openings formed thereon. The first IR sensor is disposed proximate to the first corner and has an unobstructed path and line of sight to outside of the electronic device via the first plurality of openings. The second IR sensor is disposed proximate to the second corner and has an unobstructed path and line of sight to outside of the electronic device via the second plurality of openings. The openings of the first plurality of openings are oriented toward the first IR sensor in different directions. The openings of the second plurality of openings are oriented toward the second IR sensor in different directions.

An electronic device for detecting presence includes a housing and an infrared ('IR') sensor. The housing includes an outer surface having an opening formed thereon. The IR sensor is disposed in the housing and adjacent to the opening. The IR sensor has an unobstructed path and line of sight through the opening to outside of the housing. The IR sensor is configured to receive heat emitted by a person from outside of the housing via the opening and to generate a signal in response thereto.

A method for resolving blind spots associated with a proximity sensor provides an optical guide in cooperation with an isolator wall that separates a transmitting section and a receiving section of the proximity sensor. Additionally, a specific guide angle of the optical guide directs, towards a receiver, more light rays reflected off an external object than light rays transmitted from a light source in the transmitting section.

Method for resolving blind spots associated with proximity sensors

An infrared sensing assembly for allowing detection of a location of an external object, as well as a mobile device employing such an assembly and related methods of operation, among other things, are disclosed. In one exemplary embodiment, the sensing assembly includes a pyramid-type housing structure having a central surface and multiple outer surfaces each of which extends in an inclined manner away from the central surface. The sensing assembly further includes multiple phototransmitters each positioned proximate to a respective one of the outer surfaces, and a photoreceiver positioned proximate to the central surface, with each respective photoelectric device being oriented so as to correspond to its respective surface. The sensing assembly is operated so that light is emitted from the phototransmitters, reflected by the object, and received by the photoreceiver. By processing signals from the photoreceiver that are indicative of the received light, the external object's location is determined.

Sensing assembly for mobile device

Barcodes stored by mobile devices can be used in commerce. In sending barcode data optically from a display backlight of a mobile communication device to a barcode scanner optical receiver, the transmitted data bit time needs to be compatible with the frequency range the barcode scanner is designed to receive. The disclosed methods and mobile devices can send barcode data optically at different frequencies from a modulated display backlight to different models/makes of laser barcode scanners that may be used at a point of sale (POS). The disclosed are methods and devices for processing the bit time mix choices make a determination of bit time mix choices based upon predetermined criteria. Location of the device is an example of predetermined criteria. A location may have a particular bit time mix signature that may be accessed, for example, in a look up table.
