A method for increasing the tactile feel of a glass-ceramic article includes (a) performing a first etching of a surface of the glass-ceramic article with a first etchant to create a plurality of features on the surface, wherein the first etchant comprises hydrofluoric acid and an inorganic fluoride salt, and the plurality of features comprises protrusions and recesses and (b) performing a second etching of the surface with a second etchant different from the first etchant to enlarge a distance between adjacent features of a same type, wherein the second etching occurs after the first etching, after the second etching an average distance between adjacent features of a same type is in a range from 0.5 μm to 20 μm and a density of features of the same type is in a range from 9,000 to 25,000 features/mm, and a tactile feel of the surface after the second etching is greater than the tactile feel of the surface before the first etching.

Method for controlling surface features on glass-ceramic articles and articles formed therefrom

Optically transparent fiber glass cover substrates for electronic displays. The cover substrates include an optically transparent fiberglass composite layer including a fiberglass layer embedded in a matrix material and an optically transparent hard-coat layer bonded to a top surface of the optically transparent fiberglass composite layer. A bottom surface of the optically transparent fiberglass composite layer may define a bottommost exterior surface of a cover substrate. The bottommost exterior surface of a cover substrate may be disposed over a display surface of an electronic display to protect the display surface from damage.

Fiberglass composite cover for foldable electronic display and methods of making the same

Described herein are articles and methods of making articles, including a transparent composite film having a fiber filler embedded in a polymer network. The polymer network of the transparent composite film is a cured, cross-linked matrix including a first and second structure segment. The structure segments may contribute or impart improved properties in the transparent composite film. The select structure segments can provide increased modulus and reduced glass transition temperature thereby allowing for a desirable balance of flexibility and rigidity in the transparent composite film. The improved transparent composite film is suitable for many applications including use in display devices.

Transparent composite film and flexible display devices including the same

Described herein are articles and methods of making articles, including a transparent composite film having a fiber filler embedded in a polymer network and further including a hard coating. The polymer network of the film is a cured, cross-linked matrix. The hard coating is a cross-linked aromatic urethane acrylate oligomer and a photoinitiator and provides a flexible protective layer that maintains good hardness, puncture-resistance and scratch-resistance.

Transparent composite film with hard coating, method for forming the same and flexible display device including the same

Embodiments of anti-glare substrates and articles including the same are disclosed. In one or more embodiments, the anti-glares substrate includes a textured surface with a plurality of features having an average cross-sectional dimension of about 30 micrometers or less. The substrate or article exhibits a transmission haze of 10% or less, a PPDr of about 7% or less or 6% or less, and a DOI of about 80 or less. Method for forming the anti-glare substrates are also disclosed and include etching a surface of a substrate with an etchant having low water solubility to provide an etched surface, and removing a portion of the etched surface. The method includes generating a plurality of insoluble crystals (e.g., any one or more of KSiFand KAlF) on the surface while etching the surface. The etchant may include a potassium salt, an organic solvent and a fluoride containing acid.

Anti-glare substrates with low sparkle, DOI and transmission haze

An apparatus for producing anti-glare surfaces includes an etching cream dipping tank and a sub-tank arranged to receive a slurry of etching cream. A pumping unit is fluidly coupled to the etching cream dipping tank and the sub-tank such that the pumping unit is operable to selectively self-circulate the slurry of etching cream in the sub-tank to improve homogeneity of the etching cream and transfer a volume of the homogenized etching cream from the sub-tank to the etching cream dipping tank.

Methods of modifying glass-ceramic articles and glass-ceramic articles formed therefrom. The methods include providing a glass-ceramic article having a non-damaged surface, applying a chemical etching solution to the non-damaged surface, and removing the chemical etching solution. The chemical etching solution modifies the non-damaged surface so that from about 0.01 &#x3bc;m to about 2 &#x3bc;m of a depth of the glass-ceramic article is removed. The chemical etching solution modifies the non-damage surface of the glass-ceramic article to form a roughened surface having a reduced gloss value and a target roughness value.

Methods to texture opaque, colored and translucent materials

Described herein are aqueous acidic glass etching solutions or media comprising HF and HSO, wherein HF is present in concentrations not exceeding about 1.3M. The etching solutions are used to treat glass articles such as thin glass sheets at above-ambient temperatures to etch slight thicknesses of surface glass therefrom, the etching solutions exhibiting improved stability against dissolved glass precipitation and rapid glass removal rates at slightly elevated temperatures.
