A rare earth magnet capable of reducing an eddy current loss by virtue of a low-cost, simple configuration, when mounted in a motor, is to be provided. The rare earth magnet can include a magnet body that includes a rare earth element and iron; and a resistive layer formed on at least one surface of the magnet body, the resistive layer comprising a rare earth element, iron, and oxygen and having an average volume resistivity of 10&#x3a9;cm or more and a thickness of from 3 to 25 &#x3bc;m.

A rare-earth element including a magnet body containing a rare-earth element, and a protective layer formed on a surface of the magnet body. The protective layer may include a first layer covering the magnet body and containing a rare-earth element, and a second layer covering the first layer and containing substantially no rare-earth element. Another protective layer in accordance may include an inner protective layer and an outer protective layer successively from the magnet body side. The outer protective layer is any of an oxide layer, a resin layer, a metal salt layer, and a layer containing an organic-inorganic hybrid compound.

The present invention has aimed to provide a method which is capable of producing a rare earth magnet having a protective layer that can provide a sufficient water resistance. The present invention provides a method for producing a rare earth magnet comprising a magnet body containing a rare earth element and a protective layer with high water resistance formed on the surface of the magnet body, the method comprising a first step in which a zinc compound soluble in an alkaline solution is dissolved in an alkali silicate solution to prepare a treatment solution, a second step in which the treatment solution is attached on the surface of the magnet body, and a third step in which the treatment solution attached on the magnet body surface is cured to form a protective layer comprising the cured product of the treatment solution.

Method of making a composite substrate

A thermal head including a protection layer having mutually opposed first and second surfaces, said first surface having a flat or protruded printing surface which is brought into contact with a heat sensitive record medium, a heat generating section including resistors and electrodes connected to the electrodes and provided on said second surface of the protection layer, and a reinforcing member made of a low melting pint glass and provided on a side of the heat generating section remote from the protection layer. The reinforcing member improves a mechanical strength of the thermal head. The reinforcing member made of a glass also serves as a heat storage member, and thus a thermal property of the thermal head is improved. The reinforcing member may be formed by an aggregate of ceramic particles. The reinforcing member may contain a heat storage layer made of a low melting point glass and a heat conduction layer provided on the heat storage layer.

An wear-resistant layer constituting a printing surface which is brought into contact with a thermal record medium is formed on a provisional substrate having a groove formed in its surface, said groove having a substantially semicircular cross section, and a heat generating layer electrically conductive layers and electrically connected to the heat generating layer, a protection layer and a heat storage layer are stacked in turn to form a printing section. In order to improve the mechanical strength of the thermal head, a reinforcing layer made of a glass is provided on said first surface of the protection layer except for said printing surface such that a surface of said reinforcing layer is not higher than said first surface of the protection layer at said protruded printing surface.
