A chain-belt for engagement with the pulleys of a continuously variable transmission consists of interleaved sets of chain links joined for articulation by a joint which has a rocking action. The joint includes a pair of pins. A small camber is introduced into one or both of the pins to create a spring load between the pins and the links to retain the pins in the chain during handling and assembly. Each chain link includes a pair of spaced apertures adjacent the opposite ends; each aperture has a generally hour-glass shape with the enlarged ends receiving the pins. Also, each chain link has a pair of oppositely disposed tabs adjacent one end with the location of the tabs on the links alternating on adjacent links of each set. In addition the outermost two links of each set of links had a width substantially less than the width of the inner links in that same set.

An automatic transaxle for use in an automotive vehicle driveline including a compound planetary gearset, a hydrokinetic unit and a torque splitter gear unit that cooperate to define torque delivery paths from the vehicle engine to a driven shaft; the driven shaft being located between the hydrokinetic unit and the compound planetary gearing and the torque splitter gear unit being located within the housing for the hydrokinetic unit; and clutch-and-brake means for establishing and disestablishing each of the forward driving ratios and the reverse drive ratio, the clutch-and-brake means being arranged in a compact fashion within the housing for the compound planetary gearing to provide a minimum axial length of the assembly; the driven shaft being connected drivably to the vehicle traction wheels through a differential gearing mechanism; the hydrokinetic unit, the gearing and the differential mechanism being enclosed in a common cast housing.

Transaxle for a vehicle driveline

A planetary transmission mechanism comprising two simple planetary gear sets driven by the engine of a vehicle by an input clutch or torque converter and having four friction engaging devices and a one-way engaging device to establish four forward driving ratios and reverse through the transmission. A center output gear is mounted between the input clutch or torque converter and the planetary gear sets. The pair of friction engaging devices comprising clutches associated with the planetary gear set are mounted immediately adjacent the gear input elements which they connect.

A speed-responsive engaging mechanism adapted for use in a hydrodynamic device to couple turbine and impeller members including a disc secured to the turbine member having a series of convexly curved cam surfaces thereon formed in apertures in the discs with a series of friction shoe assemblies mounted in the apertures in engagement with the cam surfaces. The friction shoe assemblies engage with the impeller at a predetermined speed of rotation of the turbine member, and the curved cam surface induces a wedging engagement of the shoes with the impeller member. Spring means are provided to retain the shoe assemblies in the apertures, and a roller mechanism is provided in each shoe assembly to provide relatively frictionless relative movement between the cam surfaces and the shoe assemblies. Each shoe in the assembly is made of a sintered metal material and has a spring retaining structure cast in the shoe.

A speed-responsive engaging mechanism adapted for use in a hydrodynamic device to couple turbine and impeller members including a disc secured to the turbine member having a series of cam surfaces thereon formed in apertures in the discs with a series of friction shoe assemblies mounted in the apertures in engagement with the cam surfaces. The friction shoe assemblies engage with the impeller at a predetermined speed of rotation of the turbine member, and the cam members induce a wedging engagement of the shoes with the impeller member. The cam members are flexible to limit the amount of torque which can be developed by the wedging action.

A planetary overdrive gear mechanism for an automatic transmission utilizing a double-acting one-way clutch with means to immobilize the cage for the one-way clutch with the rollers in an intermediate position whereby the inner and outer races are free to rotate relative to one another and a brake mechanism for the inner race of the clutch which is integral with the sun gear whereby with the brake applied and the one-way clutch neutralized, an overdrive ratio is established through the mechanism, and with the brake released and the cage control released, a two-way direct drive is established through the mechanism.
