In a system, in one embodiment, having a page server for transmitting pages upon request and a page client (or 'web browser') for requesting pages and presenting those pages to an operator, the page client dynamically identifies links subsequent to the loaded page and preloads pages identified by those links for subsequent presentation to the operator, so that the preloaded pages are preloaded dynamically in response to operator selections and are available for presentation to the operator when ultimately selected. The page server and the page client may act independently or may cooperate so as to dynamically select and preload pages from the page server to the page client using parameters indicated by the page client (such as parameters selected by the operator or adaptively determined by the page client), etc. The page client may dynamically save and recall behavior information about pages to be presented.

Dynamic preloading of web pages

The invention provides a method and system for presenting information in a web document using a program applet to restrict further copying or redistribution. The web document includes a first region in which a graphical element or other information is displayed, and a second region covering the first region in which a program applet is invoked by a server for the web document. The program applet is dynamically created upon access, and assigned a serial number. The program applet contacts the server for permission to display the graphical element or other information; thus, the server can control, by granting or denying permission, when and if the program applet displays the graphical or other information. The program applet can be subjected by the server to one or more of a variety of restrictions, such as: a limit on the number of times the information is displayed, a time limit, a requirement for a password or other security authentication, a requirement that the program applet is executing at a selected device or from a selected web document, or other requirements the server may deem fit to impose.

Secure graphical objects in web documents

The invention provides a method and system for entry and editing of multimedia objects for communication and presentation, associating multimedia objects with received sequences of keystroke or mouse action abbreviations. When an abbreviation is detected, the abbreviation is replaced with the associated multimedia object. Each multimedia object has editable properties, and each set of multimedia objects can be collected into an ensemble, which itself can have editable properties. One such ensemble property is a 'theme,' which presents a variant of each multimedia object consistent with the theme.

Multimedia communication and presentation

A method and system are described for providing features for internet access at an internet appliance which go beyond the resource limitations of the internet appliance. Such features may be implemented on the server, and coupled to the internet appliance for display, responsive to the ability of the internet appliance to provide those features. (1) The internet appliance and the server adapt to communication link limitations by dynamically adjusting picture quality or size for graphics to be displayed. (2) The internet appliance and the server adapt to memory and processor limitations by dynamically running applets at the server and intercepting display functions of applets for display at the internet appliance. (3) The internet appliance and the server adapt to memory and processor limitations by dynamically running editing programs or web pages at the server and by dynamically adjusting picture quality or size for graphics to be displayed.

Preloading of web pages is described. In an implementation, an apparatus comprises a processor and storage. The storage includes program instructions that are executable by the processor to load a first web page in response to a selection by an operator and identify a link in the first web page pointing to a second web page. The program instructions are further executable to automatically preload the second web page based on the identified link, the second web page preloaded for later presentation.

Miniclient for internet appliance

The invention provides a method and system for dynamic downloading of hypertext electronic mail messages. The system includes a mail server for receiving electronic mail messages and their headers, and a mail client for downloading electronic mail messages and their headers from the mail receiver and presenting downloaded electronic mail messages and headers to an operator. The mail client dynamically downloads and presents electronic mail messages responsive to interactive instructions from an operator, preloads and stores electronic mail messages for subsequent presentation to the operator, and organizes electronic mail messages in hypertext sections for selection by and presentation to the operator. The mail server and the mail client cooperate dynamically and interactively to download, so as to present to the operator, electronic mail messages, or portions thereof, linked by hypertext links and possibly including data, audiovisual material, included programs, security features, or other features in addition to text.

Dynamic downloading of hypertext electronic mail messages

The invention provides a method and system for formatting electronic mail for transmission, in which electronic mail messages include the operational results of one or more applets. An electronic mail client creates an electronic mail message using one or more applets, each of which may operate to actively receive, transform, and display information to be presented with the electronic mail message. At or near a time when the electronic mail message is formatted for transmission, editable program code for the applets is removed, and any dynamic links between the applets are broken. The electronic mail message made available to the receiver can thus include active elements, but any applets which are received are not editable by the receiver.
