In one general aspect, a cuff for attachment to a heart includes an attachment component configured to engage a blood pump to attach the cuff to the blood pump and a sewing ring for attachment to the heart. The sewing ring is coupled to the attachment component, and the attachment component and the sewing ring each define a central opening configured to admit an inflow cannula of a blood pump. The sewing ring comprises a member that provides rigidity to flatten a portion of a myocardium of the heart when the cuff is attached to the heart.

Disclosed herein is an inflow cannula for an implantable blood pump assembly. The inflow cannula includes a tubular body that extends from a proximal end to a distal end. The tubular body includes a proximal portion adapted for connection to a pump housing, and a distal portion adapted for positioning within an opening formed in a heart. The inflow cannula further includes an expandable sleeve coupled to an exterior surface of the distal portion. The sleeve has a first portion coupled to the distal portion of the tubular body, and a second portion extending from the distal end of the tubular body. The second portion is deployable from a first, stored configuration to a second, deployed configuration in which the second portion expands radially to engage and conform to an endocardial surface of the heart.

A patient adapter for connecting a driveline cable between an implantable blood pump and a controller. The patient adapter provides a sufficiently large form factor to make connecting ends of a driveline cable easy for patients who lack dexterity or have unclear vision. The patient adapter includes an adapter body that defines a central lumen that extends through an entire length of the adapter body. The central lumen is configured to receive an end of a percutaneous end connector of the driveline cable and an end of a controller end connector of the driveline cable. The patient adapter includes a first mating feature configured to engage a corresponding feature of the percutaneous end connector and a second mating feature configured to engage a corresponding feature of the controller end connector. A thickness of the adapter body is greatest at a position proximate the controller end connector.

A surgical tunneler assembly is used to pass a cable or other elongate member through the skin. A surgical tunneler may include a lance including a first segment, a second end segment, and a connector on each one of the first end segment and the second end segment. A cable adapter includes a lance connection portion and a cable connection portion. The lance connection portion engages and disengages the connectors. The cable connection portion engages and disengages a cable. A handle engages and disengages the lance.

The present disclosure provides an apical connector for use in a heart wall. The apical connector may include a port defining an aperture therethrough, an anchoring device extending distally from the port and configured for advancing at least partially through the heart wall, and a cannula configured for advancing through the aperture of the port and at least partially through the heart wall. The cannula may include a locking tab configured to engage the port and lock the cannula with respect to the port.

Apical connectors and instruments for use in a heart wall

A protective cap for fluidly sealing a connector of a cable is provided. The protective cap includes a flexible body having an interior cavity with a distal opening through which the connector is inserted. The distal opening is defined by an annular ridge that engages a cable portion proximal the connector to fluidly seal the entire connector within the cavity. The body portion may have an oval-shaped cross-section while the interior cavity is cylindrical so that the portions wider portions of the body provide longitudinal rigidity to facilitate installation and removal of the cap by a manual pushing and pulling. A tether may be included to attach the cap to a distal portion of the cable. The protective cap and tether may be integrally formed of a soft, highly flexible material to improve ease of use, biocompatibility and patient comfort.
