A system and method for saving handwriting in a scanned image as an annotation is disclosed. Automatic annotation logic recognizes the presence of handwriting in a scanned image and saves the handwriting as an annotation. Alternatively, a user of the scanner may identify the handwriting to be saved as an annotation or the automatic annotation logic may identify a notation including handwriting on the scanned page. Optionally, further processing may be applied to remove the appearance of the notation and/or the handwriting from the preview scan feature or from the document generated from the scanned image. Once saved as an annotation in the saved document, the handwriting may be maintained as not visible in the document or may be made visible by the user of the scanner. By saving handwriting as an annotation, a version closer to that of the original version of the document is available to the user, thus reducing clutter in the image presented to the user, while maintaining the information conveyed by the handwriting for presentation to the user if desired.

Greeting card making apparatus for assisting in the production of a greeting card by duplication apparatus may comprise a layout template that defines a layout area. The layout area accommodates at least one object that is to be contained in the greeting card. The greeting card making apparatus is convertible between a layout mode and a duplication mode. During the layout mode, the layout area is observable by a user so that the user may observe an arrangement of the at least one object within the layout area. During the duplication mode, the layout template is reproducible by the duplication apparatus so that the duplication apparatus produces a copy of the arrangement of the at least one object within the layout area defined by the layout template.

Greeting card maker for use with a scanner

Automatic filename assignation logic automatically assigns a filename and extension to a scanned image, thus eliminating the need for the user to interactively assign the filename. The automatic filename assignation logic together with the document analysis and processing logic determines the appropriate filename under which to save the scanned document by searching a predefined region within the document for a filename and an extension. A user may preselect the region or the region may be a default region applied to all scanned documents unless the automatic filename assignation logic is otherwise instructed. Alternatively, the presence of a notation, such as a 'POST-IT&#xae;' note on a page is searched for, and, if discovered, the information contained in the notation (the desired filename and extension) becomes the name under which the automatic filename assignation logic saves the document.

Disclosed is a selective document processing system and method. The selective document processing system includes a digital document analyzer configured to determine a number of regions on a digital document and a data type for each of the regions, the data type for each region being one of a number of predefined data types. The system also includes a first user interface to display the analyzed digital document and to allow the user to perform various functions relative to the displayed digital document including selecting desired regions, deleting regions, etc. The system also includes a selection interface activated from the first user interface for identifying at least one of the predefined data types that are displayed on the first user interface and that are further processed in predetermined processing pipelines.

Collage making apparatus for assisting in the production of a collage by duplication apparatus may comprise a layout area contained within the collage making apparatus. Collage making apparatus and method for making a collage

A reflective surface behind an image to be scanned on an optical image scanner, copier, facsimile machine or similar device. This reflective surface is dynamically adaptive to the item being scanned, copied or faxed to provide improvements such as reducing image bleed-through while maintaining a desirable level of dynamic range. Preferably, the reflective surface has a reflectance that is dynamically variable and controlled to be either all white, all black, all grey or some other color. The scanning or copying reflective background may also be varied in different regions, such that different regions of the reflective background may simultaneously be white, black, grey, or some other color. The background reflective surface of the scanner, facsimile or copier may be controlled directly by an operator or end user or by software or firmware of the scanner, copier or facsimile. The dynamically variable reflective surface of the scanner, facsimile or copier may be an LCD.

Method and apparatus for a dynamically variable scanner, copier or facsimile secondary reflective surface

A system for determining the type of graphical data within a scanned image. The system scans an image to obtain grayscale image data, and then performs a density slice operation on the grayscale image data, using a predetermined grayscale range, to produce binary image data. The system erodes the binary image data, and counts the number of black pixels remaining within the image data. If the count of the black pixels within the image exceeds a maximum acceptable pixel count, the area is considered to be continuous tone, such as a photograph, otherwise, the region is considered to be bi-tonal, such as line art or text. The system can also perform multiple density slices and erosions, using different grayscale ranges, OR the results, and then analyze the result of the OR operation to determine the type of image.
