A press-fit connection between a high-strength component and a press-fit element is characterized by a non-circular previously made hole into which the press-fit element having a collar is inserted. Here, the collar is merely upset and pressed against a hole rim without embracing an underside of the component. Preferably, the hole rim is widened in a longitudinal direction such that a form-locking connection acting in opposition to the longitudinal direction is formed. The non-circular hole geometry is produced with the aid of a punch of circular cross sectional geometry, in that a cutter of the punch has leading and recessed cutting regions, with the result that disrupted partial regions are formed.

A self-punching press-fit element, in particular a punching nut, has a head part with a head bearing for bearing on a component, as well as a punching collar having an end-side cutting edge. An undercut is configured between the punching collar and the head bearing. An encircling displacement web is configured so as to adjoin the punching collar on the head bearing, the encircling displacement web being adjoined in the radial direction by a further external region of the head bearing. The further external region in the longitudinal direction is set back in relation to the displacement web. During the configuration of the press-fit connection, material is press-fitted from the upper side of the component into the undercut by the displacement web. A deformation of the lower side of the component is preferably not performed.

A method for producing an assembly unit includes providing the assembly unit with an assembly part and at least one welding element serving for the thermal joining of the assembly part to a basic construction. The welding element is fixed in a through opening of the assembly part with at least one form-locking connection acting in the direction of the center longitudinal axis of the through opening and having a first end face, a second end face facing away from the first, and a peripheral surface that interconnects the end faces. The welding element has two side faces running parallel to each other and pointing away from each other, a profile that ensures the at least one form-locking connection and two transverse surfaces which connect the side faces one to the other.

An assembly unit is produced according to the following method steps: an assembly part is provided which does not yet have a through bore. A disc-shaped welding element blank with a first end side, a second end side and a peripheral surface is stamped out of a sheet metal blank by a punch and a hole die so that the peripheral surface has a cylindrical longitudinal portion extending away from the first end side, and an adjoining cone portion which tapers towards the second end side and forms with this a cutting edge. The welding element blank is stamped with the cutting edge at the front into the assembly part to thereby form the through bore.
