A closed system transfer device (CSTD) and vial assembly machine includes a linear travel assembly including a linear mount, and an actuator operably coupled to the linear mount. The linear mount is movable in an axial direction between a first position and a second position spaced from the first position. A CSTD fixture is configured to be removably coupleable to the linear mount. A vial mount is disposed adjacent to a portion of the linear travel assembly. A vial fixture is configured to be removably coupleable to the vial mount. The vial fixture is sized to hold a vial in axial alignment with a portion of the CSTD fixture when the vial fixture is coupled to the vial mount and the CSTD fixture is coupled to the linear mount. When the linear mount moves from the first position to the second position, the linear mount moves relative to the vial mount.

Impact testing apparatuses are disclosed which simulate and measure various impact-related events associated with the operation of a drug delivery device. The impact testing apparatus may include an impactor configured to simulate a plunger rod of the drug delivery device, and a guide sleeve configured to receive a syringe corresponding to the drug delivery device. The syringe may have a proximal end, a distal end defining an outlet, and an interior chamber extending between the proximal and distal ends and carrying a plunger. Additionally, the impact testing apparatus may include an energy source configured to reduce a distance between the impactor and the plunger so that the impactor strikes the plunger. Various sensors may be included to measure characteristics of one or more impacts caused by the impactor. Methods of impact testing a syringe filled with a fluid and carrying a plunger are also disclosed.

Impact testing apparatuses and methods for drug delivery devices

A method for determining predicted failure rates of drug injection devices includes receiving a set of parameters specifying physical properties of a syringe, a liquid drug, and a drug injection device configured to deliver the liquid drug to a patient via the syringe, the drug injection device including a mechanism that drives a plunger rod toward a plunger of the syringe encased in a syringe carrier. The method also includes receiving failure rate data specifying a measured rate of failure of the drug injection device in response to various peak pressures within the syringe, applying the set of parameters to a kinematic model of the drug injection device to determine a predicted peak pressure within the syringe, determining a probability of failure of the drug injection device using the failure rate data and predicted peak pressure, and providing an indication of the determined probability of failure to an output device.

Reducing probability of glass breakage in drug delivery devices

A drug delivery device includes a housing defining a shell having a proximal and a distal end, a needle assembly at least partially disposed within the housing at the proximal end, a drive assembly at least partially disposed within the housing, and a damper mechanism at least partially disposed within the housing adjacent to the distal end. The housing further defines a longitudinal axis extending between the proximal end and the distal end. The needle assembly includes a syringe barrel containing a medicament and a needle or a cannula. The drive assembly is operably coupled to the needle assembly to urge the medicament through the needle or cannula. The damper mechanism is operably coupled to the drive assembly and the housing. Upon activating the drive assembly, the damper mechanism dampens an effect thereof.

Drug delivery device having minimized risk of component fracture upon impact events

A method for determining predicted failure rates of drug injection devices includes receiving a set of parameters that specify physical properties of (i) a syringe, and (ii) a liquid drug, and (iii) a drug injection device configured to deliver the liquid drug to a patient via the syringe. The method further includes receiving failure rate data that specifies a measured rate of failure of the drug injection device in response to various peak pressures within the syringe, applying the received set of parameters to a kinematic model of the drug injection device to determine a predicted peak pressure within the syringe, including determining the predicted peak pressure as a function of impact velocity of the liquid drug, determining a probability of failure of the drug injection device using (i) the received failure rate data and (ii) the predicted peak pressure, and providing an indication of the determined probability of failure to an output device.

A plunger configured as described herein provides geometry optimizations to minimize friction magnitude and variability during use by maintaining low deformation under large extrusion forces. More specifically, plunger embodiments described herein minimize a contact area between the plunger and a syringe or chamber, while also maintaining high contract pressures to maintain container closure integrity. Moreover, the plunger embodiments are configured to have minimal or no increase in the contact area under high loads associated with the delivery of viscous products.
