A heating system includes a plurality of heater elements, a plurality of switches connected to the plurality of heater elements, a set of predetermined performance information including heater information specific for each heater element, at least one temperature sensor measuring temperature of at least one heater element from among the plurality of heater elements, and a heater control unit in communication with the temperature sensor(s). The heater control unit controls the heater elements differently, via the switches, based on the heater information and the measured temperature from the temperature sensor(s).

Smart heater system

A heater control module of the present disclosure controls exhaust temperature in an exhaust after treatment system. The heater control module includes a heating mode determination module and a heater operating module. The heating mode determination module is configured to select a desired heating mode from a plurality of heating modes based on an engine load and a status of a component of the exhaust aftertreatment system. The heater operating module is configured to operate an electric heater based on the desired heating mode. The plurality of modes includes at least a passive regeneration heating mode and an active regeneration heating mode. The electric heater is operated in the passive regeneration heating mode to heat an exhaust gas to a predetermined temperature to increase NOgeneration when an engine load is less than or equal to approximately 25%.

Electric heating assisted passive and active regeneration for efficient emission controls of diesel engines

A method of heating an exhaust gas in an exhaust after treatment system includes selecting a heating mode between a plurality of heating modes based on an engine load and a status of a component of the exhaust aftertreatment system. The method further comprises heating the exhaust gas by operating the electric heater in the selected heating mode, and operating the electric heater in a passive regeneration heating mode to heat an exhaust gas to a predetermined temperature to increase NO2 generation when an engine load is less than or equal to approximately 25%.

A method of heating an exhaust gas in an exhaust aftertreatment system by selecting a heating mode between different heating modes based on an engine load and a status of a component of the exhaust aftertreatment system. The method includes heating the exhaust gas by operating the electric heater in the selected heating mode and heating the exhaust gas to reduce an exhaust temperature gradient across the exhaust conduit.

An engine control system includes an injection determination module and an injection regulation module. The injection determination module determines a desired rate of hydrocarbon (HC) injection into exhaust gas produced by an engine for regeneration of a particulate matter (PM) filter. The injection regulation module increases a rate of HC injection from a first rate to the desired rate during a predetermined period before regeneration of the PM filter, wherein the predetermined period is based on a difference between a predetermined temperature and a temperature at an outlet of an oxidation catalyst (OC).

Control system and method for preventing hydrocarbon slip during particulate matter filter regeneration

A method of heating an exhaust gas in an exhaust aftertreatment system including a Diesel Oxidation Catalyst (DOC) and a diesel particulate filter (DPF) is provided. The method includes heating the exhaust gas to a predetermined temperature to increase NOgeneration in the DOC when the DPF is not actively regenerated, and heating the exhaust gas to reduce an exhaust temperature gradient when the DPF is actively regenerated. The exhaust temperature gradient is reduced by providing more heat proximate a wall of an exhaust conduit and less heat proximate a center of the exhaust conduit.

In an exemplary embodiment, an internal combustion engine includes an oxidation catalyst configured to receive an exhaust gas flow from the internal combustion engine, a urea injector positioned downstream of the oxidation catalyst to inject a urea flow into the exhaust gas flow and a mixer positioned downstream of the urea injector to mix the exhaust gas flow and the urea flow to form a mixed exhaust gas and urea flow. The engine also includes a particulate filter and catalytic reduction assembly positioned downstream of the mixer to receive the mixed exhaust and urea flow from the mixer to form a treated exhaust gas flow and an exhaust gas recirculation system coupled to the particulate filter to receive a portion of the treated exhaust gas flow and recirculate the portion of the exhaust gas flow to be mixed with a fresh air flow for the internal combustion engine.

Exhaust aftertreatment and exhaust gas recirculation systems

An exhaust gas treatment system for an internal combustion engine is provided comprising an exhaust gas conduit, a particulate filter ('PF') device, a hydrocarbon source and an electronic control module including operative logic which when implemented. The PF has a filter structure for removal of particulates in the exhaust gas and is selectively regenerated based on an amount of particulates trapped within the filter structure of the PF device. The control module is in communication with the internal combustion engine and the hydrocarbon source, and receives a regeneration signal indicating the amount of particulates trapped within the filter structure of the PF device. The electronic control module includes control logic for monitoring the internal combustion engine prior to a regeneration event. The electronic control module includes control logic for determining a plurality operating parameters of the internal combustion engine based on the monitoring.

Regeneration of a particulate filter based on a particulate matter oxidation rate

An exhaust treatment system is disclosed that can diagnose the performance of an exhaust treatment oxidation catalyst in converting NO to NO. The exhaust treatment system is fluidly coupled to an internal combustion engine, and includes an oxidation catalyst disposed in an engine exhaust stream; a reductant source for injecting a reductant into the exhaust stream downstream of the oxidation catalyst; an SCR catalyst disposed in the exhaust stream downstream of the reductant source; and a gas sensor, disposed in the exhaust stream downstream of the oxidation catalyst and upstream of the reductant source, comprising a plurality of sensing or pumping cells that measures NO concentration in the exhaust gas and NOconcentration in the exhaust gas.

Apparatus and method for onboard performance monitoring of oxidation catalyst

A method of regenerating a diesel particulate filter (DPF) may include operating a vehicle including a diesel engine at an idle condition and applying a load to the diesel engine during the idle condition to increase an exhaust temperature of the diesel engine relative to a nominal idle condition. The increased exhaust temperature may regenerate a diesel particulate filter of the diesel engine during the idle condition.

A method and control system for controlling an engine during diesel particulate filter regeneration includes a diesel particulate filter (DPF) regeneration request module that generates a DPF regeneration request signal and an idle condition module that generates an idle condition signal when the engine is at an idle condition. A DPF regeneration control module initiates a timer in response to the DPF regeneration request signal and the idle condition signal. The DPF regeneration control module controls the engine oxygen level to a second level less than a first level corresponding to a non-idle speed level, and after a time period, controls the engine to generate oxygen at a third level greater than the second level.

Method and system for controlling an engine during diesel particulate filter regeneration at idle conditions

A post injection control system for regulating diesel particulate regeneration of a diesel particulate filter (DPF) with a diesel engine includes a mass airflow sensor that generates a mass airflow signal. A temperature sensor senses the temperature of exhaust and generates an exhaust temperature signal. And a control module commands post injection at a post injection value determined from the mass airflow signal and at a post injection rate determined from the exhaust temperature signal.

A method and control system for controlling an engine during diesel particulate filter regeneration includes a diesel particulate filter (DPF) regeneration request module that generates a DPF regeneration request signal. The control system also includes a DPF regeneration control module that controls the oxygen level in the exhaust based on an oxygen level signal corresponding to an oxygen level in the exhaust and a DPF inlet temperature signal corresponding to the DPF inlet temperature.

Method and system for controlling an engine during diesel particulate filter regeneration warm-up

An apparatus and a method for enhancing diesel engine performance is provided. At low engine load and cold ambient temperatures, an intake air heater increases the engine load via an engine alternator, which in turn, enables the engine to burn more fuel by the process of combustion. The combusted fuel elevates exhaust gas temperatures, which thereby accommodates cold start, controls white smoke, and aids DPF regeneration.
