A multi-battery flash charging system is described herein. The system is configured to reduce a power charging loss at a battery-operated device. This device includes multiple, distributed batteries. The process of reducing the power charging loss at the battery-operated device is achieved by generating a charge voltage at a charge voltage regulator that is required to be located externally relative to a housing of the battery-operated device. Reducing the power charging loss at the battery-operated device is further achieved by transmitting the charge voltage over a high resistance wire that couples the charge voltage regulator to the battery-operated device.

Technologies are described for a two-wire power delivery system with negotiated charging between host and client devices. The host device uses a state machine and additional support circuits to negotiate time-domain separated bi-directional communications with a client device over powerlines with a two-wire cable. After attachment of the client device is detected by the host device, communications are sent from the host device to the client device, an acknowledgement is sent by the client device to the host device, and charging by the host device is established. Additional failsafe conditions may be detected by the host device, such as: detachment of the client device, short circuits, and dead batteries. Periodic retriggering of negotiated communications is utilized to ensure safe charging operation and failsafe conditions. The client device includes a correspondingly configured state machine with support circuitry to facilitate communications and proper detection of conditions by the host device.

A computer implemented method includes accessing a first status of a first battery pack interface coupled to a load via a first load switch and accessing a second status of a second battery pack interface coupled to the load via a second load switch. The first status and the second status are compared and the first and second load switches are controlled based on the comparing to balance remaining capacities of the first and second battery packs.

Technologies are described herein for a two-wire power delivery system that may be employed by a mobile device with a reversable cable. The described techniques allow for the two-wire power cable to be inserted in any orientation into the mobile device, without requiring a special keying or registration element, and without requiring any additional pins or wires. The mobile device includes a passive protection circuit that assists the two-wire power cable system in detecting the correct orientation for power delivery.

The uneven charge and discharge from non-collocated batteries within an HMD can be solved by monitoring the DC current on the paths coupled to the first battery and the second battery and making an adjustment in the path resistance to equalize, or at least reduce, the difference between the currents on the two paths. Aspects of the technology described herein monitor current on paths from two or more non-collocated batteries. When the currents are different, resistance is dynamically added to the path with the higher current to equalize the current in the two paths. The monitoring and resistance adjustment can occur during discharge from a battery to a load and during battery recharge.

An enhanced parallel protection circuit is provided. A system using separate battery packs in a parallel configuration is arranged with multiple protection circuit modules (PCMs). The PCMs are configured to detect fault conditions, such as over voltage, under voltage, excess current, etc. The PCMs can be configured to control associated switches and/or other components. When a fault condition is detected by an individual PCM, the individual PCM transitions to a fault state, and the PCM triggers an output causing one or more actions, e.g., causing a device to shut down or isolate one or more components. In addition, by the use of the techniques disclosed herein, the individual PCM can generate a control signal that causes other PCMs to transition to a fault state. The individual PCM can also receive a control signal from another PCM to cause the individual PCM to transition to a fault state.

Systems and methods for limiting battery discharge based on battery temperature are disclosed. In an example, a controller sets a current limit, using battery temperature, and provides corresponding current limits to a power management device and a system-on-chip (SOC). Upon battery discharge current exceeding the discharge current limit, the controller increases the discharge current limit, and provides updated current limits to the PM device and the SOC. Upon the battery temperature exceeding a battery pack maximum temperature, the controller issues a shutdown command to the PM device and the SOC.

Techniques for enabling multi-pack and component connectivity detection are provided. In some configurations, individual PCMs can test the connectivity between components of a device without the need to operate the components. For example, PCMs configured in accordance with the present disclosure can test the connectivity between a motherboard, a display circuit, a camera, and a number of battery packs without the need to operate the motherboard, display circuit, camera, etc. In some configurations, conductors that are part of cables and connectors used to connect the components can be used to determine the state of one or more connections. When a signal that runs through the conductors meets one or more criteria, the PCMs of a device cause a predetermined delay prior to enabling one or more components. By testing the connectivity between components before each component transitions to an operational state, other problems caused by faulty connections can be mitigated.
