A system includes a mass spectrometer and associated sample interfacing equipment. The sample interfacing equipment includes a platform structured to support a sample thereon, a fluid source, a high voltage source, a dispensing probe electrically coupled to the high voltage source and defining a fluid dispensing passage therethrough, a collection probe defining a collection passage therethrough, a sensing arrangement coupled to the dispensing probe, and control logic responsive to the sensing arrangement to control distance between the dispensing probe and the sample. The dispensing probe facilitates formation of one or more ionized sample analytes when dispensing the fluid through the dispensing passage proximate to the sample on the platform. The collecting probe receives at least some of the one or more ionized sample analytes to pass through the collection passage into the mass spectrometer for analysis.

Techniques for controlling distance between a sample and sample probe while such probe liberates analyte from a sample region for analysis with a mass spectrometer

An apparatus and process are disclosed that deliver an analyte deposited on a substrate to a mass spectrometer that provides for trace analysis of complex organic analytes. Analytes are probed using a small droplet of solvent that is formed at the junction between two capillaries. A supply capillary maintains the droplet of solvent on the substrate; a collection capillary collects analyte desorbed from the surface and emits analyte ions as a focused spray to the inlet of a mass spectrometer for analysis. The invention enables efficient separation of desorption and ionization events, providing enhanced control over transport and ionization of the analyte.

Focused analyte spray emission apparatus and process for mass spectrometric analysis

Disclosed is a method for selective chemical binding and immobilization of macromolecules on solid supports in conjunction with self-assembled monolayer (SAM) surfaces. Immobilization involves selective binding of peptides and other macromolecules to SAM surfaces using reactive landing (RL) of mass-selected, gas phase ions. SAM surfaces provide a simple and convenient platform for tailoring chemical properties of a variety of substrates. The invention finds applications in biochemistry ranging from characterization of molecular recognition events at the amino acid level and identification of biologically active motifs in proteins, to development of novel biosensors and substrates for stimulated protein and cell adhesion.

Method for selective immobilization of macromolecules on self assembled monolayer surfaces

The invention relates to a method and apparatus for enhanced sequencing of complex molecules using surface-induced dissociation (SID) in conjunction with mass spectrometric analysis. Results demonstrate formation of a wide distribution of structure-specific fragments having wide sequence coverage useful for sequencing and identifying the complex molecules.
