A system and method for speech file processing which provides users with differentially selectable speech file transcripts which can be sent to one or more other users. The speech files may be voicemail messages from which respective voicemail transcripts are created. The voicemail transcripts are provided in a user selectable format from which users may select non-contiguous portions of the transcript.

System and method for processing speech files

The invention provides a system and method for indexing and organizing voice mail message by the speaker of the message. One or more speaker models are created from voice mail messages received. As additional messages are left, each of the new messages are compared with existing speaker models to determine the identity of the callers of each of the new messages. The voice mail messages are organized within a user's mailbox by caller. Unknown callers may be identified and tagged by the user and then used to create new speaker models and/or update existing speaker models.

A method of training a TTS or other system to assign intonational features, such as intonational phrase boundaries, is described. The method of training involves taking a set of predetermined text (not speech or a signal representative of speech) and having a human annotate it with intonational feature annotations. This results in annotated text. Next, the structure of the set of predetermined text is analyzed to generate information. This information is used, along with the intonational feature annotations, to generate a statistical representation. The statistical representation may then be stored and repeatedly used to generate synthesized speech from new sets of input text without training the TTS system further.

The statistical representation may then be stored and repeatedly used to generate synthesized speech from new sets of input text without training the TTS system further. The resulting trained system and use thereof are also part of the invention.
