Recording transactions using a chronological list superimposed on an indexed list. A transaction log of transaction entries is maintained as a chronological list superimposed on an indexed list. Preferably, each transaction entry includes a transaction descriptor field, a time stamp field, a chronological list pointer field and an indexed list pointer field. A first chronological list pointer points to the oldest transaction entry in the transaction log and a last chronological list pointer points to the latest transaction entry in the transaction log. The chronological list pointer field of a transaction entry points to the next oldest transaction entry. The indexed list includes a number of indexed list entry pointers. Each indexed list entry pointer corresponds to an index and points to a transaction entry with the same index. The indexed list pointer field of a transaction entry points to another transaction entry with the same index. Adding a transaction entry to the transaction log or deleting a transaction entry from the transaction log includes updating the chronological list pointers and the indexed list pointers.

A transaction log of transaction entries is maintained as a data structure logically organized as a chronological list superimposed on an indexed list. In one aspect of the invention, the transaction log is implemented in an element of a telecommunications network. In another aspect of the invention, the transaction log is implemented in a computer system. Preferably, each transaction entry includes a transaction identifier field, a time stamp field, a chronological list pointer field and an indexed list pointer field. Methods and systems for obtaining information based on a calling number associated with a communication from a subscriber area defined within the service area. A grid/block/strip system defines at least one strip within a subscriber area and within a block. A strip table includes a strip entry for each strip and each strip entry includes strip entry information. In response to receipt of a communication including a calling number representing a point within the service area, a key is created. The key identifies a particular block encompassing the point. The key is used with the strip table to find a strip entry that corresponds to a strip encompassing the point. The encompassing strip is found by using the key to check only strip entries corresponding to the particular block, and in some embodiments, to check only the strip entry keys of a strip entry corresponding to the particular block. Further, the encompassing strip is found by using and changing the key as necessary to check the particular strip entries to determine whether the point is located in an N-strip of the particular block, an N/2-strip, an N/4 strip, etc. Based on finding the encompassing strip, information relating to the communication may be obtained from the encompassing strip entry information. Prior to obtaining the information relating to the communication from the encompassing strip entry information, a comparison may be made between the offset of the point and the min offset and the max offset of the encompassing strip entry information. If the offset of the point is between the min offset and the max offset, it may be confirmed that the strip corresponds to the encompassing strip. Then, information relating to the communication may be obtained from the encompassing strip entry information.

A method and system of routing a call, made to a single number of a subscriber, to a particular subscriber location of a plurality of subscriber locations based on the geographic area from which the call originated is disclosed. One method of the present invention routes a call from a caller that is placed by dialing a single telephone number that is operative for serving all of the subscriber locations. The method includes identifying the calling party with a specific location identifier indicating the location of the calling party, providing a range table of selected ranges of location identifiers and if the specific location identifier is within one of the selected ranges of the range table, the call is routed to the destination location corresponding to the selected range containing the specific location identifier. If the specific location identifier is not located within one of the selected ranges, the call is routed to the destination location corresponding to the specific location identifier located in an auxiliary database containing subscriber locations. In the disclosed embodiment, the geographic areas are represented by zip codes and multiple categories of zip codes may be represented.

Method for routing a call to a destination based on range identifiers

The present invention is a method that enables a business with multiple locations within a LATA to use a single number for its service. All callers dial the same number to reach the subscriber's business, and a network routes the calls to the most appropriate subscriber location based on the geographic location of the caller, time of day, day of week, and/or percent distribution among subscriber locations. The geographic location of the caller is determined using the calling party number (NPA-NXX-XXXX) and either mapping this number to a wire center (using the NPA-NXX) or to a block group (using the entire NPA-NXX-XXXX). An advantage of Area Number Calling is the granularity of block group routing. Block groups are defined by the Census Bureau and typically encompass a much smaller geographic area than a wire center. Block groups are defined by the Census Bureau for the entire United States. Block groups tend to encompass four to twelve blocks, and they honor natural boundaries, like rivers. This gives an ANC subscriber a greater degree of flexibility in defining which geographic areas should be routed to which subscriber locations. The present invention also provides a method of reducing the amount of geographic data that is transmitted to or stored on a database associated with the routing equipment by routing as a unit intersecting regions of multiple subscriber data tables.
