A probe includes a first rod having a first axis and a second rod having a second axis. A first end of the first rod is connected to a first end of the second rod to form an angle that maintains a 'total internal reflection' effect for waves propagating through the probe. A second end of the second rod includes a prong facilitating attachment of the probe to a housing block. The first axis and the second axis define a plane. A second end of the first rod includes a tapered face formed perpendicular to the plane. The tapered face is sufficiently flat to make planar contact with a portion of a component under study. A support is formed in the plane and connected to the second rod. A second end of the support includes a connector to facilitate attachment of the probe to the housing block.

There is described a method for heating a sample material in a sample holder, the method comprising receiving the sample holder in a heating chamber of a heating system, the sample holder having at least one sample recipient with the sample material therein; dynamically forming an individual mini microwave cavity around the sample recipient; and applying microwaves generated by at least one microwave generator directly to the sample.

Independent heating of samples in a sample holder

There is described a heating system for independently heating at least one sample recipient containing a sample, the sample recipient provided in a sample holder, comprising: a heating chamber having at least one opening and adapted to receive the sample holder; at least one microwave generator for generating microwaves; at least one microwave applicator inside the heating chamber connected to the at least one microwave generator, the at least one microwave applicator comprising an oven cavity portion for creating a mini microwave cavity around a single sample recipient in the sample holder, and for applying microwaves generated by the at least one microwave generator directly to the single sample recipient; and a control unit for controlling the at least one microwave generator.

There is described a power splitter for directing electromagnetic power comprising: an input port for receiving the electromagnetic power; at least one dielectric element placed inside the power splitter; at least two output ports for outputting the power according to a splitting ratio, the at least two output ports placed on a surface opposite to the input port; and at least one dielectric moving device for positioning the at least one dielectric element between the at least two output ports to dynamically direct the power into the at least two output ports according to the power splitting ratio.

An ambulatory device for measuring urine flow comprises a portable hand-held container and a handgrip mounted thereto. A flow-measuring device is located in the container, and a means for collecting the data measured by the flow-measuring device is also provided. The parameters of the urine flow in the container are measured by the flow-measuring device and are processed by the aforementioned means for collecting data. The handgrip is pivotally mounted to the container by a double-pivot mechanism for maintaining the container substantially vertical in a number of positions of the handgrip. The flow-measuring device includes a sensor that measures a displacement of an air column related to a variation of pressure due to a variation of a urine level in the container.

Ambulatory device for measuring urine flow

A flexible microwave antenna assembly for a surgical ablation instrument capable of conforming to a tissue surface for ablation thereof. The ablation instrument includes a transmission line having a proximal portion suitable for connection to an electromagnetic energy source. The antenna assembly includes a flexible antenna coupled to the transmission line for radially generating an electric field sufficiently strong to cause tissue ablation. A flexible shield device is coupled to the antenna to substantially shield a surrounding area of the antenna from the electric field radially generated therefrom while permitting a majority of the field to be directed generally in a predetermined direction. A flexible insulator is disposed between the shield device and the antenna which defines a window portion enabling the transmission of the directed electric field in the predetermined direction. The antenna, the shield device and the insulator are formed for selective manipulative bending thereof, as a unit, to one of a plurality of contact positions to generally conform the window portion to the biological tissue surface to be ablated.

Flexible ablation instrument

A medical instrument is disclosed. The medical instrument includes a transmission line suitable for the transmission of electromagnetic energy and an antenna coupled to the transmission line. The antenna is configured for generating an electromagnetic field sufficiently strong to cause tissue ablation. The medical instrument further includes a reflector arranged to be electrically coupled to the transmission line. The reflector is positioned laterally to a first side of the antenna and configured for redirecting a portion of the electromagnetic field to a second side of the antenna opposite the reflector, wherein a majority of the electromagnetic field is directed away from the second side of the antenna.
