The present invention is directed to multireactivity polymercaptans, star-shaped copolymers and methods of preparing wherein the polymer comprises a polyvalent mercaptan core and three or more polymeric arms which extend radially from the core. The polyvalent mercaptan core comprises three or more thiol groups, wherein at least two of the thiol groups are of different reactivities, such that the core is of differential reactivity. These multifunctional thiols, which will be referred to as cores of differential reactivity, act as chain transfer agents in a free radical polymerization process.

A crosslinking additive for imparting water resistance to starch-based alkaline corrugating adhesive compositions is prepared by reacting acetone and formaldehyde under aqueous alkaline conditions at 20.degree.-80.degree. C. in a molar ratio of from 2 to 5 moles of formaldehyde per mole of acetone. The condensate is thereafter treated with from 1.0 to 2.0 moles of hydrogen peroxide per mole of unreacted formaldehyde which oxidizes the residual formaldehyde to formic acid. The treated crosslinking additive will contain less than 0.4% unreacted formaldehyde and may be added directly to a starch-based corrugating adhesive.

Alkaline corrugating adhesive composition

Nonwoven assemblies bonded with water dispersible or sensitive hot melt adhesives comprising 50-100 parts of a graft copolymer of about 40-85% of at least one vinyl monomer and about 15-60% of at least one water soluble polyalkylene oxide polymer, and about 0-50 parts by weight of tackifying resin. The compositions may also be employed as water sensitive binders in the manufacture of the nonwoven. Vinyl acetate is the preferred vinyl monomer whereas ethylene oxide homo- or copolymers are the preferred polyalkylene oxide. The use of tackifying resin is optional and may be undesirable for many of the applications.

Water sensitive hot melt adhesives for nonwoven applications

This invention presents water-resistant, formaldehyde-free starch-based corugating adhesives. The adhesives are alkaline-curing and contain 0.1-7% (by wt.) of a crosslinking agent which is a condensate of an epihalohydrin and an amine, a polyamine, or ammonia.

This invention presents improved epoxy-based die attach adhesives which are of low viscosity, high ionic purity, and stable toward thermal cycling. This improvement is obtained by including in the formulation carboxy terminated polymers which are the reaction products of polyether diols with cyclic dianhydrides.
