A method of communication between a first node and a second node for a system where a plurality of different channels is provided between said first and second node. The method comprises the step of calculating an integrity output. The integrity output is calculated from a plurality of values, some of said values being the same for said different channels. At least one of said values is arranged to comprise information relating to the identity of said channel, each channel having a different identity. After the integrity output has been calculated, Information relating to the integrity output is transmitted from one of said nodes to the other.

Integrity check in a communication system

During connection setup with a first radio access network, a multimode mobile station sends an unprotected initial signaling message that includes information about those encryption algorithms that the multimode mobile station supports when it communications in a second radio access network. The first radio access network saves some or all the information. Then it composes and sends an integrity-protected message that includes information about the encryption algorithms supported by the multimode mobile station in the second radio access network.

System for ensuring encrypted communication after handover

During a connection between a network infrastructure and user equipment a first indication of the amount of data transmitted over the connection is maintained in the network infrastructure and a second indication of the amount data transmitted is maintained in the user equipment. A checking procedure is triggered in response to encountering a predetermined checking value. The checking procedure utilizes integrity protected signalling. During the checking procedure the first indication is compared with the second indication. This checking procedure enables easy discovery of an intruder who either sends and/or receives data on an authorized connection between a network infrastructure and a mobile station, the data transmission being charged from the mobile station.

Method of checking amount of transmitted data

The invention relates to methods for transmission of signalling data in cellular telecommunication networks. According to the invention, multiple radio bearers can be allocated for transferring signalling traffic, but all higher layer signalling is in any case taken through the RRC protocol. In the inventive method, MM and higher layer messages are sent using RRC DIRECT TRANSFER messages, but a separate RLC entity is set up for RRC DIRECT TRANSFER messages. In various embodiments of the invention, separate radio bearers can be set up for individual CN domains and/or upper layer protocols and/or for a group of RRC messages.

Signalling method

A method and arrangement for determining the expiry time for a period during which the re-establishment of lost radio bearers is allowable. There is determined a first expiry time () for a period during which the re-establishment of lost radio bearers used to provide services of a first category, like real time services, is allowable. Additionally there is determined a second expiry time () for a period during which the re-establishment of lost radio bearers used to provide services of a second category, like non-real time services, is allowable.

Method and arrangement for optimizing the re-establishment of connections in a cellular radio system supporting real time and non-real time communications

The invention relates to a method of ciphering data transmission in a radio system, and to a user equipment using the method, and to a radio network subsystem using the method. The method includes the steps of: () generating a ciphering key; (A) producing a ciphering mask in a ciphering algorithm using the ciphering key as an input parameter; (B) using a logical channel specific parameter or a transport channel specific parameter as an additional input parameter to the ciphering algorithm; and () producing ciphered data by applying the ciphering mask to plain data.

Method of ciphering data transmission in a radio system

A method for protecting traffic in a radio access network connected to at least two core networks. The method comprises maintaining a core-network-specific authentication protocol and a radio-bearer-specific ciphering process, and generating, for each ciphering process, a count parameter comprising a cyclical sequence number and a hyperframe number (HFN) which is incremented each time the cyclical sequence number completes one cycle. For each core network or authentication protocol, a first radio bearer of a session is initialized with a HFN exceeding the highest HFN used during the previous session. When a new radio bearer is established, the mobile station selects the highest HFN used during the session for the core network in question, increments it and uses it for initializing the count parameter for the new radio bearer. At the end of a session, the mobile station stores at least part of the highest HFN used during the session.

Counter initialization, particularly for radio frames

The present invention relates to a paging method and system for a radio access network which provides access to a core network, said system comprising a central network controlling device () for receiving pagings and for distributing said pagings to other network controlling devices () based on a paging information provided to said central network controlling device. Accordingly, while the access network comprises many RNCs and/or RNASs, the information required for paging or mobility management is provided at one place in one location or routing area. Thus, when the core network sends a paging request, the request does not have to be transmitted to many RNCs and/or RNASs and extra paging can be avoided in the access networks. Moreover, a paging coordination is possible despite of the number of different core networks.

Paging method and system for a radio access network

A method for improving the performance of random access when establishing a communication link between a user equipment (UE) and a radio network (UTRAN) the method includes transmitting a random access message (RAM) from the user equipment (UE) to the radio network (UTRAN), wherein the radio random access message (RAM) contains information describing a functional capability (UB_CAPABILITY) of the user equipment (UE). Thereby, the network knows the capabilities of the terminal as early as possible and can thus optimize all functions performed by the network to be in conformity with the terminal capabilities.

Method for establishing a communication link between a user equipment and a radio network

The invention concerns signalling methods in cellular telecommunication systems, especially in so called third generation cellular systems, such as the UMTS system. In the inventive method the network checks, if the mobile station is in or is about to enter into such a state, in which the mobile station needs a c-RNTI, and if that is the case, the c-RNTI is indicated to the mobile station. Preferably, the indication is effected by attaching the c-RNTI identifier to a message, which causes the change of the mobile station to the state, in which the mobile station needs the c-RNTI identifier.

Identifier allocation method

A paging method and apparatus for a mobile communication network to which at least two non-coordinated core networks are connected is disclosed, wherein a service state of a mobile station is checked, when a request for a paging message to the mobile station has been received from one of the non-coordinated core networks. Then, a multicall paging message is transmitted using an existing signalling link of the mobile station and/or mobile station location information known in a radio access network, when the mobile station is already connected to another one of the non-coordinated core networks. The checking is preferable performed by a radio network controller which is connected to the non-coordinated core networks. Thus, a paging request received form a non-coordinated core network can be supplied to a mobile station, although the paged mobile station is already connected to another non-coordinated core network.

Paging control method and apparatus

A method and an arrangement for managing packet data transfer in a cellular system such as the Universal Mobile Telecommunications System, UMTS. The decision about the channel used for the transfer of packet data is made based on a channel selection parameter and values of the parameters needed in the decision-making are sent to the mobile station. The parameters are advantageously sent on a common channel such as the BCH or FACH. Parameters sent advantageously include the maximum packet size on the RACH, current RACH load, a threshold value for amount of data in RLC buffers, etc. The parameters may concern all mobile stations, a subset of the mobile stations or one mobile station in the area in which the parameters are sent. The invention minimizes the transfer capacity load associated with signaling and the transfer of packet data can be performed with minimal delays caused by signaling.
