The invention relates to a method and an arrangement for configuring an indoor base station for a cellular mobile telecommunications network. According to an advantageous embodiment of the inventive method, a mobile communications means is used to scan possible transmission frequencies on-site to find out free frequencies to operate on, and to transmit the results of scanning of the frequencies to the indoor base station and to choose proper parameters for the indoor base station. An arrangement according to an advantageous embodiment of the invention comprises an indoor Base Transceiver Station, mobile communications means for scanning frequencies and to find free frequencies and a Base Station Controller for controlling the base station.

Method and a mobile station for configuring a base station

The idea of this invention is to use at least two modems on the network management system side. At least one of these modems is used only for connections initialized by the network management system. At least one other modem is used only for connections initialized by any or a group of network elements controlled by the network management system. The number of modems used for connections initiated by the management system may be more than one, thus enabling the network management system to initiate simultaneous connections to more than one network element. Likewise, more than one modem can be assigned for connections initiated by the network elements.

Arrangements for controlling network elements

The invention relates to a method of adjusting the radio frequency of a repeater ( ) in a cellular radio network. The repeater ( ) amplifies radio signals ( ) of a bi-directional radio connection between a base station ( ) and a subscriber terminal ( ) at least at one particular radio frequency. In accordance with the invention, the repeater ( ) monitors the radio signals ( ) transmitted by at least one base station ( ). The repeater ( ) automatically tunes to amplify the signals ( ) of the particular radio frequency on the basis of information included in the radio signals ( ) it has monitored. The monitored radio signals ( ) include a control channel, for example a broadcast control channel BCCH, comprising information on the operating frequencies of the base station ( ). Monitoring means (404) are preferably similar to a subscriber terminal ( ).

Method of adjusting frequency of cellular radio repeater

The present invention relates to a method of monitoring the operation of a cellular radio system in a system comprising at least a first base station and a repeater adapted to repeat signals sent by the first base station on traffic channels. In order for the management system to be able to detect malfunction more promptly and easily than before, the method comprises steps in which: the repeater is adapted to receive a traffic channel list sent by the base station, the traffic channels included in the traffic channel list are compared with the traffic channels used by the repeater, and an alarm is given if the traffic channels used by the repeater differ from the traffic channels included in the traffic channel list.

Method of monitoring operation of cellular radio system

In order to integrate repeater management with network management in a wireless telecommunication network, a database is added to the network management center (NMC), said database including the data on the network repeaters (R , R , R ), which include for each repeater (R , R , R ) at least the identifier of the base station (BTS) corresponding to the repeater concerned; a repeater plan is made for changing repeater parameters to correspond to the changed configuration of the base stations; and each repeater is sent an update message (B , B , B ) containing parameters for the reconfiguring of the repeater (R , R , R ) to correspond to the repeater plan. The invention also relates to a network management system in which the method of the invention can be applied. In addition, the invention relates to a repeater, which can be utilized in the method and system of the invention.

Method for repeater management

The idea of this invention is to control different types of network elements with the same management system by connecting the network elements into the management system using a conversion element. The control messages such as alarms and acknowledgments transmitted by the network element via a modem and being dependent on the network element type are directed to the conversion element. The conversion element converts the message transmitted by the network element into a format understood by the management system and then transmits the converted message to the management system. Correspondingly, the management system transmits the configuration messages to the conversion element in its own format. The conversion element converts the message on the basis of the information about the identity of the receiving network element to the format used by the network element and transmits it forward. For the message format conversion, the conversion element uses a conversion file. The conversion file contains information about the message formats used by the different network elements and how the contents of the fields are to be converted from one format to another. When new types of network elements are added to the network, the conversion file is updated by adding the information required for converting the message format of the new network element type to the format understood by the management system.

Arrangement and equipment for handling not-compatible messages between a management system and network elements controlled by the management system

The invention relates to a method for estimating the interference level in a cellular radio system comprising in each cell a base station ( ) in each cell, and a number of subscriber terminals ( to ) communicating with the base station. The terminals measure power levels from those frequencies which are on the list that is maintained by the terminal and comprised those base stations and frequencies to which the terminal can perform a handover. In the solution of the invention the list also comprises frequencies whose power level information is used for the frequency planning of the system. Frequency planning can thus be implemented without any separate means.

Method of estimating interference level in a radio system

In a TDMA cellular mobile communications system the radio interface between a mobile station and a base station consists of traffic frames which include several time slots in which in one time slot of an uplink direction frame the mo-bile stations can transmit in an access burst a request to the network to be assigned a radio connection for traffic. A repeater is added in the system through which the radio connection between the base station and the mobile station can pass, if necessary. The repeater converts the carrier wave frequency used by the base station to the carrier wave frequency used by the mobile station, and the carrier wave frequency used by the mobile station to the carrier wave frequency used by the base station. The repeater adds its own burst to the access burst of the mobile station, the said burst including the information which identifies the repeater.

Cell expansion in a time division cellular system using frequency converting repeaters

A method for identifying a fast speed mobile station (MS) in a radio system, said method comprising measuring the frequency error of radio signals received from a mobile station. In order for a fast speed mobile station to be more reliably identified than before, the method comprises calculating the change (df) in BSC the frequency error from a time interval (t) of predetermined length, and identifying the mobile station as a fast speed mobile station if the change (df) in the calculated frequency error exceeds a predetermined limit value.
