Generic Internet Protocol (IP) authentication is provided by authentication server (). Application Programming Interface (API) () detects the protocol type of an incoming authentication request and invokes one of a number of authentication mechanisms (-) depending on the protocol type detected. System, apparatus, and method for providing generic internet protocol authentication

The invention relates to a method and to associated radio access networks and network elements for assigning values of service attributes to transmissions between a user equipment and a radio access network. In order to allow for an improved assignment of values of service attributes, it is proposed that, upon request of such a transmission by a user equipment of a subscriber registered with some radio access network the method comprises determining values of service attributes that are to be used for the transmission requested by said user equipment based on at least one value of at least one service attribute defined by a stored subscriber specific service profile, and based on at least one stored common value of at least one service attribute.

A mechanism is provided for supporting differentiated services (quality of service) in a radio network. A radio access system is provided which supports the quality of service in data packet transmission over its air interface. The system comprises a selection of predefined default radio flows having different quality of service characteristics and means () for selecting a radio flow having appropriate quality of service characteristics for the packet to be transmitted over the air interface from the selection.

Method and system for supporting the quality of service in wireless networks

The invention relates to radio systems and particularly to a handover and interworking between two radio systems utilizing different link protocols. According to the invention, in a handover the radio link protocol of the old (handover source) radio system is also retained after the handover in the new (target) radio system. The 'old' radio link protocol is merely adapted to a physical traffic channel of the new radio system. One manner of implementing the adaptation to the traffic channel is to set up the radio link protocol of the 'new' radio system between the mobile station and the interworking function and to transmit the radio link protocol frames of the &#x201c;old&#x201d; radio system within the radio link protocol of the new radio system. Due to this simple but effective arrangement, possibly ongoing sequences of selective retransmissions and retransmission requests of the old radio link protocol are not interrupted or disturbed, wherefore it is also possible to avoid the manipulation of buffer synchronization which might possibly lead to retransmission complications and loss or doubling of data as a result of the handover.

Handover and interworking in radio system

The invention relates to data transmission in telecommunication systems and particularly in radio systems. The invention employs 'payload numbering' instead of or in addition to conventional frame numbering. Data () is split into fixed-length data blocks or payload units (). The size of a block is preferably equal to or smaller than the shortest information field in frames () of the protocol(s) used. Each protocol frame carries one or more payload units. In an optimum situation the length of the information field in a protocol frame equals n * the length of the payload unit, where n is an integer. Instead of frame numbering (in some special cases possibly in addition to it) the protocol frame carries payload numbers both for indicating the payload units (data blocks) conveyed in the protocol frame and for acknowledging the received blocks.

A method, apparatus and computer program for applying a predetermined transmission process to the transmission of IP packets of a particular Internet Protocol (IP) flow in an IP network. The invention is implemented by defining in a host, such as a wireless terminal, a Quality of Service (QoS) management protocol between an IP session management protocol of the host and each of an IP layer and a link layer of the host, and defining in another apparatus, such as a wireless access point, a QoS management protocol between the QoS management protocol of the host and each of an IP layer and a link layer of the wireless access point. The wireless access point communicates with the wireless terminal via a link and allows the wireless terminal to communicate with the IP network. IP session information is configured in the wireless terminal and the wireless access point in each of the IP and link layers based on IP session management information from the IP session management protocol of the wireless terminal. Based on the defined configuration, an IP flow between the wireless terminal and the wireless access point is identified as a particular IP flow. Thereafter, a predetermined transmission process can be applied to the transmission of IP packets of the identified IP flow.

Method, apparatus and computer program for IP traffic prioritization in IP networks

The invention relates generally to procedures facilitating the routing in a network-structured telecommunications network. In the network structure according to the invention, connections are established by using a predetermined partial group of connections forming a tree topology. Advantageously the number of said predetermined tree topologies is more than one, in which case the node starting the setup of the connection chooses the tree topology to be used in establishing the connection in question. Thus the advantages offered by the tree topology can be flexibly utilised in a network-structured telecommunications network.

Method for flexible use of a tree topology in a wireless ATM system

In a network structure according to the invention for realising a radio extension of an ATM network, only part of the switches of the ATM network are provided with functions required for supporting wireless terminals. In between these wireless-specific switches, there are provided individual connections in order to distribute control and management information. The wireless-specific switches and the individual connections therebetween form a parallel, tree-like PNNI node structure in relation to the rest of the ATM network, so that the wireless-specific switches belong, in addition to said PNNI node structure, also to the node structure of the regular ATM network. With a structure like this, the additions required by the support of wireless terminals in the PNNI protocol remain very slight.

A reference is made to ATM cells by dividing the cells into groups (31, 32, 33, 34) which are identified on the basis of a group-oriented serial number and/or on the basis of the combination of identifiers included in the cells of the group. In the latter case, the combination of the identifiers is compared with a given predefined aperiodic character string. A given cell within the group is identified on the basis of which cell it is counting from the beginning and/or from the end of the group, or on the basis of the identifier included in the cell.

In a radio data transmission system which transmits data in cell form, the risk of cell loss or the risk of out-of-ordering during handover can be diminished by synchronizing the cell transmission between the new (50) and the old (40) base stations. The old base station (40) delivers to the new base station (50) and/or the switch (51), information on the last cell that was transmitted successfully and in the right order through the old base station, whereby the new base station continues the transmission by starting from the first failed cell. Cells need not be identified one by one if group numbering is applied in which the first or the last cell of a given group (31, 32, 33, 34) or a given counter cell is numbered, and the rest can be indicated, where necessary, by counting the distance from the numbered cell.

Maintaining the composition of transferred data during handover

In a radio extension of an ATM network, prior to establishing a given connection the switch of a fixed network enquires access points as to what is the resource situation in said access points. After receiving responses the switch decides to which access point the connection is allocated. During handover, the resource enquiry is accomplished as a response to the handover request sent by the mobile terminal, which request is transmitted either when the connection to the old access point still operates or after the connection is closed; in the latter case, the request is retransmitted through the new access point.

Method for establishing radio connection as part of an ATM network

In the handover of a radio extension of an ATM network there are used markers that are located at fixed locations in the ATM cell stream in order to indicate the ending of an uplink and downlink cell stream, so that the switching of cell streams can be carried out in a synchronised fashion, and cells are not lost and their relative order does not change. If a downlink data transmission via the old access point succeeds, the old access point attaches to the last forwarded information field a notice of closing the traffic, in which case the mobile terminal transfers the information of successful transmission to the new access point. In another case, the old access point sends the unforwarded cells to the new access point and terminates the transaction with the same marker that generally indicates the end of a downlink cell stream.
