Provided is a granular activated carbon that can be used for applications similar to wood-based steam-activated carbons; and also provided is a method for manufacturing the same. The granular activated carbon is obtained in the following manner. An activated carbon raw material is carbonized, and then pulverized. The pulverized product is then mixed with a calcium component, and the mixture is molded. Subsequently, the molded product is carbonized and activated, followed by washing.

Provided is a granular activated carbon having many mesopores that can be used for applications similar to sine chloride-activated carbons, and also provided is a method for manufacturing the same. The granular activated carbon is obtained by bringing an activated carbon into contact with a calcium component, followed by activation and washing.

It is a problem to be solved by the present invention to provide an oxidation catalyst which, in oxidation of a compound, can efficiently effect oxidation using oxygen in the air as an oxygen source and can be used repeatedly. The above-mentioned problem was solved by an activated carbon in which the BET specific surface area S determined by a nitrogen adsorption method and the amount of surface oxygen which will leave in the form of carbon monoxide O(% by weight) satisfy formula (I) 4000&#x3c;S&#xd7;O. By using this oxidation catalyst, it is possible to oxidize a compound having an oxidizable carbon atom linked directly to an aromatic ring, including a heterocyclic ring, to a corresponding aldehyde or keto compound, or to oxidatively dehydrogenate a hydrogen-containing compound to form an unsaturated bond or a cyclic compound, or to oxidatively and dehydrogenatively form a nitrogen-containing heterocyclic ring from an aryl aldehyde and a compound having a pair of adjacent carbon atoms, one of the carbon atoms having an amino group and the other having an amino, hydroxyl or mercapto group.

A removing agent for heavy metal ion in water which comprises synthetic zeolite, wherein 10 mol % or more of a total amount of exchangeable cation is substituted with magnesium ion and 60 mol % or more thereof is substituted with magnesium ion and calcium ion, and activated carbon at a weight ratio of 2:98 to 50:50 can effectively adsorb and remove heavy metal ions such as lead in water as well as residual chlorine and trihalomethane efficiently, particularly, in tap water, so as to allow delicious and healthful water without disturbing the balance between calcium ion and magnesium ion.
