Family of non-homopolymers synthesized from N-vinyl lactam, (meth)acrylic acid, hydrophobic (meth)acrylic ester of a straightchain or branched-chain alkyl alcohol and monomer selected from the group consisting of functionalized and unfunctionalized: dialkyl maleates, dialkyl fumarates, and combinations thereof. The non-homopolymers may exhibit solubility in one or more lower molecular weight alcohols and/or a glass transition temperature greater than 80&#xb0; C. 

Polymers polymerized from at least four monomers, and compositions and uses thereof

Described herein are multifunctional polymers comprising a first repeating unit having at least one pseudo-cationic moiety, a second repeating unit having at least a hydrophobic moiety, and a third repeating unit, where the weight-average molecular weight is less than about 10,000 Da. In one embodiment the polymers exhibit antimicrobial activity. Also provided are compositions formulated with the multifunctional polymers, and a method of providing antimicrobial activity.

Multifunctional polymers

What is described herein are conditioning/styling tetrapolymers of vinyl caprolactam (VCL), vinylpyrrolidone (VP), dimethylaminopropyl methacrylamide (DMAPMA) and C-Calkyl quaternized dimethylaminopropyl (meth)acrylamide or methacrylic acid quaternized monomers (QDMAPMA), in a defined compositional range. Hair and skin care compositions which include these tetrapolymers exhibit advantageous low tackiness and high humidity resistance.

Conditioning/styling tetrapolymers

A process of making a vinyl caprolactam (VCL)-based polymer which comprises suspension polymerizing the monomers in aqueous medium in the absence of an added protective colloid, wherein polymer formed at an early stage of the polymerization functions as a dispersing agent to maintain polymer particles suspended in water throughout the polymerization.

A process of making a cosmetically or pharmaceutically-acceptable emulsion or gel composition which comprises: (a) heating a reaction mixture comprising, by weight, about 5-70% of a vinyl monomer in about 30-95% of an oil as solvent, wherein said oil is selected from the group consisting of a silicone oil, a mineral oil and a water-insoluble organic ester and a free radical initiator, optionally in the presence of a crosslinking agent and/or an oil soluble surfactant, with agitation, under an inert gas, at about 40-150&deg; C., wherein the oil is present in an amount sufficient to keep the resultant vinyl polymer in a stirrable state until the end of the polymerization, (b) adding a surfactant, if a suitable surfactant was not present during polymerization, and, (c) then adding water to form an oil-in-water, a water-in-oil or a water-in-oil-in-water emulsion or gel, in a volume ratio of oil-in-water of 30:70 to 10:90, or water-in-oil of 90:10 to 30:70.

Process for making a cosmetically or pharmaceutically-acceptable emulsion or gel composition

A composition for preventing or retarding the formation of gas hydrates during the transport of a fluid comprising water and a hydrocarbon through a conduit. The composition is a copolymer of vinyl caprolactam and vinyl pyridine, and terpolymers thereof, with vinyl pyrrolidone, preferably including 70-97% by weight vinyl caprolactam. Suitably such polymers have a molecular weight in the range of 500 to 2500, and are made in a polymerization solvent, preferably a glycol ether, most preferably, 2-butoxyethanol; and also including a carrier solvent, preferably monoethylene glycol.

Method for preventing or retarding the formation of gas hydrates

A non-aqueous, heterogeneous polymerization process comprises heating a reaction mixture of about 5-70%, preferably 10-30%, by weight, of a vinyl monomer in an oil as solvent, and a free radical initiator, optionally in the presence of a crosslinking agent and/or a surfactant, wherein the oil solvent is present in an amount sufficient to keep the resultant polymer in a stirrable state throughout the polymerization. The polymer reaction product is capable of forming a uniform emulsion or gel upon addition of water thereto.

A composition for preventing or retarding the formation of gas hydrates during the transport of a fluid comprising water and a hydrocarbon through a conduit. The composition is a homopolymer of vinyl caprolactam, or copolymers thereof, having a low molecular weight in the range of 500 to 4000, which is made by polymerization of the monomer or monomers in a polymerization solvent which is a mixture of a glycol ether and water, preferably 2-butoxyethanol and water, at a pH of about 8-12.

A cosmetically active oil-in-water (o/w) or water-in-oil (w/o) emulsion, for topical applications comprising (a) the reaction product of a non-aqueous, heterogeneous polymerization of a liquid reaction mixture containing between about 5 and about 70%, preferably 10-40%, by weight, of N-vinylamide monomer in an oil solvent, a free radical initiator, between about 0.1 and about 2.5% by weight of a crosslinking agent and optionally a surfactant, (b) water sufficient to form said emulsion, (c) a cosmetically active hair and/or skin treating chemical or chemical composition and optionally (d) a surfactant.

Vinyl amide polymer delivery system for hair and skin treating compositions

A composition is provided herein for preventing or retarding the formation of gas hydrates or for reducing the tendency of gas hydrates to agglomerate, during the transport of a fluid comprising water and a hydrocarbon, through a conduit. The composition is a homopolymer of vinyl caprolactam having the low molecular weight in the range of 500 to 2500, or copolymers thereof, in a defined solvent. Such homopolymers and copolymers preferably are made and applied in the defined solvent, which, most preferably, is a glycol ether such as 2-butoxyethanol.

A controlled-release, drug-delivery, emulsion composition for topical application comprising (a) the reaction product of the non-aqueous, heterogeneous polymerization of a reaction mixture of about 5-70%, preferably 10-30%, by weight, of a vinyl monomer in an oil as solvent, and a free radical initiator, optionally in the presence of a crosslinking agent and/or a surfactant, wherein the oil solvent is present in an amount sufficient to keep the resultant polymer in a stirrable state throughout the polymerization, (b) water, (c) a surfactant and (d) a pharmaceutical medicament.

Controlled-release, drug-delivery composition

An improved hydrocarbon tolerant, aerosol hair spray resin composition includes a fixative polymer which is a tetrapolymer consisting essentially of (1) vinyl acetate, (2) vinyl neodecanoate or vinyl neononanoate, (3) monoisobutyl maleate and (4) N-t-butyl acrylamide, N-t-octyl acrylamide, or isobornyl (meth)acrylate, in a molar ratio from 10:10:15:1 to 26:1:15:1, preferably in a molar ratio of 12.5:7.5:15:1, exhibits advantageous small spray particle size, short tack and drying times, and hydrolytic stability, which are the desired performance characteristics on hair.
