The invention relates to an interconnection between different types of communications networks. A first core network element is connected to a first access network by means of a first protocol stack used between the first core network element and a network element in the first access network. A second core network element is connected to a second access network by means of a second protocol stack used between the second core network element and a network element in the second access network. The first core network element is arranged to support and use at least parts of the second protocol stack towards the second core network element, and the second core network element is adapted to extend the parts of the second protocol stack towards the first core network element.

Arrangement for interconnecting communications networks

The invention relates to high speed data transmission in digital mobile communication systems. In multichannel data transmission, a single data connection is allocated a plurality of parallel traffic channels (Ch , Ch , Ch ) via which the data units ( , . . . , n) are transferred. At the transmitter (Tx), the data units are provided with a numbering by means of which the receiver (Rx) is able to restore the transmission sequence of the data units received via the different traffic channels. If the length of the data units varies to a great extent or is small in relation to the transmission delay tolerance of the traffic channels, the number space of the data units must be large for the receiver to be able to restore the data unit sequence. An increase in the number of numbering bits signifies a lower efficiency for the transfer. In at least embodiment of the invention, short data units are concatenated in data blocks (I and II) each of which is transmitted as an entity via the traffic channel. In each data block, advantageously only one data unit is numbered.

High speed data transmission in mobile communication networks

The invention relates to a synchronous data transmission when the maximum data rate of the traffic channel equals one of the user data rates at the terminal interface. Such a situation may occur for example when a satellite system is connected as a base station system to a mobile system. A mobile station (MS) inserts the terminal interface status information (STATUS) in the redundant parts (REDUNDANT) of the protocol data units (PDU) of the transmission protocol used at the terminal interface and transmits the protocol units through a satellite traffic channel to a land earth station (LES). The land earth station (LES) is arranged to extract said status information from the protocol data units and to restore the original redundancy to the protocol data units.

Synchronous data transmission method and arrangement

A channel configuration of a digital mobile system comprises two or more lower-rate transmission channels for each high-speed radio interface traffic channel at the network interface between a base station and an interworking function. Radio frames, such as EDGE frames, are transferred on a radio interface traffic channel. Transmission frames, such as TRAU frames, are transferred on transmission channels. The total data rate at the network interface is greater than the data rate at the radio interface. According to the invention, the total data rates of the network interface and the radio interface are rate-adapted by transferring fill data in transmission frames in addition to payload between the base station and the interworking function, such that the average data rate of the payload at the network interface corresponds to the total data rate at the radio interface, and the combined total data rate of the fill data and the payload corresponds to the total data rate at the network interface.

High-speed data transmission in a mobile system

The present invention generally relates to data transmission services in mobile communication systems. A mobile subscriber may typically be entitled to different kinds of tele and bearer services. Presently, each user data rate is an independent bearer service. This means that there is a vast number of bearer services, which causes problems for both the network operators and the mobile subscribers. According to the invention, the number of bearer services is reduced by defining the bearer service to cover several data rates, and by negotiating, at the call set-up stage, the data rate to be used by the data call in the bearer service between the mobile station (MS) and the mobile communication network (MSC). The next step is to negotiate the data rate between the mobile communication network (MSC) and the fixed network, such as PSTN or ISDN. Then, if required, the data rate of the mobile communication network and the radio channel resources are adapted to the data rate used towards the fixed network.

Mobile communication system and method for establishing a data call

The invention relates to radio systems and particularly to non-transparent data transmission in a mobile communication system where a mobile services switching center and a radio access network belong to different system generations. A second-generation mobile services switching center is also provided with a protocol unit supporting a radio link protocol of a third-generation radio access network. In such a case the radio link protocol is set up between the mobile station and the mobile services switching center without a radio link protocol conversion in an interworking unit of the radio access network. The radio access network merely transmits the radio link protocol transparently between the mobile station and the mobile services switching center, i.e. it extends the protocol to the mobile services switching center. When a handover of a non-transparent call is carried out between two radio access networks, the same radio link protocol units (in the mobile station and in the mobile services switching center) also remain after the handover. Possibly ongoing sequences of selective retransmissions and retransmission requests of the radio link protocol are not interrupted or disturbed, wherefore it is also possible to avoid the manipulation of buffer synchronization which might possibly lead to retransmission complications and loss or doubling of data as a result of the handover.

Transparent and non-transparent data transmission in mobile communication network

The invention relates to a data transmission method and equipment in a telecommunication system, particularly in a situation where the maximum data rate of a traffic channel is equal to one user data rate at a terminal interface. A mobile station inserts terminal interface status information in redundant parts of redundant user data elements of an end-to-end transmission protocol and sends them through the traffic channel without that the status information raises the data rate. If no user data elements are received at the terminal interface, auxiliary frames, in which the terminal interface status information can be transmitted, are generated. A mobile services switching centre separates the terminal interface status information from the redundant data elements or auxiliary frames at the receiving end.

Data transmission method and equipment

The invention relates to a mobile system in which the radio interface rate of a traffic channel and the intermediate rate of a transmission channel restrict the number of bits available for the transmission of terminal interface statuses (S), network independent clocking (N) and subchannel numbering (&num;) of a multichannel data link. In the invention, the bits form a subframe (n, . . . , n&plus;10) and the status and control information are multiplexed inside successive subframes in a superframe structure (SUPERFRAME). In other words, the capacity of the bits available for the control information is shared by various kinds of control information by means of the superframe structure.

Method and equipment for transmitting terminal interface user data and status information

The invention relates to a method and equipment for network independent clocking in a telecommunication system, particularly in data transmission where the maximum data rate on a traffic channel is equal to the user data rate. In the invention a transmitter compares the network independent clock and the network clock to detect a slip and, upon detecting a slip, performs compensation of the network independent clock by changing the number of the redundant bits in user data. The user data is transmitted through a traffic channel to a receiver. The receiver, upon detecting the network independent clock compensation in the received user data, restores the original redundancy and temporarily adjusts the network independent clock so as to compensate for the change caused by the restoration of the redundancy in the outbound user data stream.

Network independent clocking in a telecommunication system

The invention relates to a handover method in a mobile communication system in which error correction of a radio signal can be arranged with different protection levels. The method comprises measuring the signal level and/or quality of base stations in a mobile station, the signal quality and level of the mobile station at the base station is measured, comparing measurements results thus obtained and other variables of the connection with handover criteria, and handover is performed from the source cell to the target cell, when the handover criteria are met. The invention is characterized by determining at least one handover criterion depending on error correction of the radio connection. The invention further relates to a mobile communication system for performing handover.

Handover in a mobile communication system

The invention relates to an interworking function apparatus (IWF), a method and an arrangement for establishing a mobile-terminating call in a mobile communications network when the call is received from a calling party via a fixed network without any signalling support which provides information on the protocol employed by the calling party. In the invention, a service is assigned only one directory number, which is common to all the protocols employed by the service. The protocol identifier in a service definition linked with this directory number has a neutral (undefined) value or may be interpreted as neutral. The IWF, upon receiving the neutral RA parameter (Step ), is switched onto the line and monitors a traffic channel received from the fixed network in order to identify the protocol employed by the calling terminal equipment (Steps ). After identifying the protocol, the IWF is configured according to the identified protocol (Steps or ), and data transfer may begin (Step ).

Adapting the fixed network protocols to a mobile communications network

An asynchronous data transmission method and a telecommunication system for transmitting asynchronous data characters and status information of a terminal interface and possibly other control and synchronization information through a synchronous traffic channel or a set of synchronous traffic channels. The system has an arrangement including a transmission protocol utilizing an asynchronous-to-synchronous conversion. The transmission protocol has protocol data units for transmission over the traffic channel or set of traffic channels. Each protocol data unit contains a predetermined number of terminal interface asynchronous data characters without start and stop bits, and the terminal interface status information and possibly other control or synchronization information, concatenated between a common start bit and a common stop bit.

Asynchronous data transmission method and arrangement

The invention relates to a handover method in a mobile communication system in which error correction of a radio signal can be arranged with different protection levels. The method comprises measuring the signal level and/or quality of neighbouring base stations (BTS) at a receiver of a mobile station (MS), comparing the measurement results thus obtained and other variables of the connection with handover criteria, and performing a handover from the source cell to the target cell, when the pre-set handover criteria are met. The method of the invention is characterized by determining at least one error connection possible for the connection in a potential target cell for the handover, determining at least one handover criterion on the basis of the determined error correction of the potential target cell, and setting the error correction of the connection in the target cell (BTS,) as said error correction of the base station of the target cell. The invention further relates to a mobile communication system for performing handover.

Handover in a mobile communication system with adjustable error correction

The invention relates to an interworking function and a data transmission method in a mobile network comprising transparent data services employing different rates and bearer services. The interworking function (IWF) is connected, in an end-to-end data connexion, between a transparent traffic channel leg in the mobile network and a traffic channel leg in the fixed telecommunication network. If the fixed network traffic channel leg utilizes a higher data rate (R,) than the mobile network transparent traffic channel leg (R,), the interworking function (IWF) buffers data in a data buffer (,) and uses flow control towards the fixed network. This enables the mobile network to support towards the fixed network a nominal user rate that is higher than the highest nominal user rate in the mobile network.

Method and apparatus for enabling data transmission between a mobile network and a fixed network having different data rates

The invention relates to an adapter equipment (IWF), a method and an arrangement for setting up a data call terminating at a subscriber in a telecommunication network. In the invention, adaptation functions of two or more data services are integrated into a single adapter pool that has one common MSISDN number shared by all the data services. After the connection has been set up, the IWF does not try to synchronize itself according to any data service towards another network but it monitors a traffic channel arriving from the other network (ISDN, PSTN) in order to identify the data service used by the calling terminal equipment. After the IWF has identified the data service, it starts operating in the manner required by the identified data service and data transmission may begin.
