The invention relates to a method for precision machining of crankshafts or camshafts to final dimensional tolerances R&#x3c;10 &#x3bc;m, preferably &#x2266;5 &#x3bc;m and concentricity tolerances &#x2266;30 &#x3bc;m, preferably &#x2266;6 &#x3bc;m, which have been machined and at least partially subjected to hardening, wherein after the first machining has been carried out and subsequent hardening to 45 to 60 HRC, preferably 50 to 53 HRC, a final machining is carried out by means of at least one milling tool, wherein it is provided that the final machining is carried out by means of cutting inserts made of coated hard metal. The invention further relates to a milling tool for precision machining of crankshafts or camshafts by carrying out the method of the invention.

Method and milling cutter for machining hardened crankshafts or camshafts

The invention relates to a tool for turning/turn broaching or external milling of work pieces rotating about longitudinal axes during machining, comprising a disc-shaped tool support having cassettes () disposed peripherally thereon, each of said cassettes containing a cutting insert (), said cassettes being fastenable to a circular, partially circular or segmented removable support () that is fastened either directly to a machine spindle or indirectly to a machine spindle by way of an adapter. According to the invention, the cassette () comprises a plate seat with a seating surface () and two lateral surfaces () as contact surfaces for the cutting insert () and can be radially adjusted by way of an adjustment member () and can be fastened by way of a clamping member (); the cassette () further comprises a slit-shaped groove () parallel to the seating surface () for the cutting insert (), said groove having opposing groove walls with a distance and angle with respect to one another that are adjustable by way of an adjustment screw () such that the angular position of the seating surface () can be changed.
