A process for the preparation of glutaric dialdehyde by the reaction of alkoxy dihydropyrans of the general formula I ##STR1## in which R stands for C.sub.1 to C.sub.20 alkoxy, with water at temperatures ranging from 0.degree. to 150.degree. C. and pressures of from 0.01 to 50 bar in the presence of a which microporous, crystalline aluminum silicate catalyst, e.g. a beta-type zeolite or pentasil catalyst having a pore diameter greater than 5.4 .ANG..

Preparation of glutaric dialdehyde

A process for preparing glutaraldehyde by reaction of alkoxydihydropyrans of the general formula I ##STR1## where R is C.sub.1 -C.sub.20 -alkoxy, with water at from 0.degree. to 150.degree. C. and from 0.01 to 50 bar in the presence of a catalyst consisting essentially of a bleaching earth.

Preparation of glutaraldehyde

A process for the preparation of alkanediols by hydrogenation of alkynediols of from 3 to 8 carbon atoms in which a solution of the alkynediol in an alcohol of from 1 to 8 carbon atoms, the mass fraction of alkynediol being more than 5%, of water at most 10%, and of alkanediol from 20% to 85%, is hydrogenated at temperatures of 110.degree. C. to 240.degree. C. and pressures greater than 10 bar, the pH being greater than 6.

Preparation of alkanediols from alkynols

Catalysts containing one of the metals iron, cobalt or nickel or a mixture of these are prepared by reduction of the particular catalyst intermediate with hydrogen at from 80.degree. to 260.degree. C. and under from 1 to 300 bar, in the liquid phase and in the presence of a redox system, and are used in the hydrogenation and amination of organic compounds.

Preparation of catalysts, and their use in hydrogenation and amination

N-Alkylpiperidines or N-alkylpyrrolidines are obtained by hydrogenating a corresponding N-alkyldicarboxylic acid imide over a fixed catalyst by first working to only partial conversion, for example of about 50%, and distilling off the required product together with water from the partially converted mixture, where appropriate with recycling of the unconverted remainder.
