A method and apparatus are provided for storing and processing picture information of temporally successive pictures wherein in each case at least one picture area is selected from each temporally preceding picture taking into account, the picture information determined from each selected picture area is stored with an assignment information item, which enables an assignment of the respective picture area and thus also of the picture information of the respective picture area to the corresponding picture and to the position of the picture area within the corresponding picture, at least one mixed picture is formed from the picture information of the respectively stored, selected picture areas, taking the account of the assignment information, and the mixed picture is used in the context of a motion estimation, a motion compensation or an error masking for an image.

In a method for coding a video data stream of a video sequence consisting of image blocks, a motion estimate for each block by determining a motion vector for that individual image block. The motion vectors of adjacent blocks are checked for agreement with one another. The transformation coding of an image block to be coded is suppressed, if the motion vector for that image block best corresponds, as the result of the agreement check image vector of a preceding, already transformation-coded image block. In this way, a considerable savings of the required data rate for the transmission of the video data stream to the receiver is achieved, as is a considerable savings in computing expense for the execution of the transformation coding.

A format conversion is necessary if video picture sequences are to be displayed on computer screens. The conversion is carried out with the aid of a direction dependent interpolation within the moving objects. For this purpose interpolation lines which are rotated with respect to one another are projected through the pixel to be generated and their intersection with adjacently situated lines of pixels in the first pixel raster is determined. The changes in brightness value between the respective intersections of the interpolation lines with the adjacent lines, these intersections being allocated to the individual interpolation directions, are then determined. That interpolation line is selected whose change in brightness value is a minimum compared with the changes in brightness value of adjacently situated interpolation line. The brightness value of the pixel to be generated in then generated by interpolation in the direction of the interpolation line thus determined.

A digital neural network has a plurality of neurons (NR) completely meshed with one another, each of which comprises an evaluation stage having a plurality of evaluators (B) that is equal in number to the plurality of neurons (NR) and each of which comprises a decision stage having a decision unit (E). An output information (INF.sub.A) can be output by every decision unit (E) to a post-processing means via a respective individual information output. The information outputs of the decision units (E) are each connected to an individual processing input of all evaluators (B) allocated to the appertaining decision unit (E). Individual processing outputs of the evaluators (B) are connected to individual processing inputs of the decision unit (E) in the appertaining neuron (N), so that every output information (INF.sub.A) can be indirectly fed back onto every neuron (NR).

A network architecture for the programmable emulation of large artificial neural networks ANN having digital operation employs a plurality L of neuron units of identical structure, each equipped with m neurons, the inputs (E) thereof being connected to network inputs (E.sub.N) multiplied or branching via individual input registers (REG.sub.E). The outputs (A) of the neuron units are connectable to network outputs (A.sub.N) at different points in time via individual multiplexers (MUX) and individual output registers (REG.sub.A) and the neuron units have individual auxiliary inputs via which signals can be supplied to them that represent weighting values (W) for weighting the appertaining neural connections and represent thresholds (0) for weighting input signals.
