Organic polyacids are prepared from monomeric monofunctional acids, such as acrylic acid or methacrylic acid and monomers without an acid group, with or without dicarboxylic acids or their anhydrides, by continuous free radical mass copolymerization under superatmospheric pressure at from 200.degree. to 400.degree. C., followed, if desired, by neutralization of the polyacids obtained. The polyacids obtained by the novel process are useful as phosphate substitutes and scale inhibitors in detergents and cleansers.

The invention relates to a thermoplastic molding material of an elastomeric polymer A, a shell B grafted to the polymer A, and a copolymer C as rigid matrix. The amount of polymer A is 1 to 25 percent by weight based on the weight of A+B+C. It has a glass transition temperature, Tg, of less than 0.degree. Thermoplastic molding materials contain a blend of a polyphenylene ether with a copolymer which consists of monovinyl-aromatic monomers, alkyl methacrylates where alkyl is of not more than 8 carbon atoms and, if required, an elastomer component having a glass transition temperature of .ltoreq.0.degree. C.

High molecular weight polyphenylene ethers are prepared from monohydric phenols by a conventional polycondensation, by a method in which the resulting polymers are reacted with an epoxide of the general formula (I) ##STR1## where R.sup.1 and R.sup.2 can be identical or different and are each alkyl, cycloalkyl, aryl, aryloxy, alkoxy or carboxyalkyl, each of which may contain a further epoxide group, or C.sub.3 -C.sub.20 -alkyl-substituted amino, or R.sup.1 is hydrogen and R.sup.2 is one of the above groups, or R.sup.1 and R.sup.2 form part of a cycloalkyl ring.

Polyphenylene ethers are prepared from monohydric phenols, which possess alkyl substituents in the two ortho-positions and, if desired, in the meta-position, but not in the para-position, by an oxidative coupling reaction with oxygen at from 15.degree. to 50.degree. C. and under from 1 to 10 bar in the presence of a catalyst complex, of a solvent and, if required, of an activator, by a method in which the conversion of the phenols is carried out in two more reaction zones, in which some or all of the solvent, the catalyst complex and the phenols and, where relevant, the activator is initially taken and is circulated by means of a conveying unit, and about 60-100% of the stoichiometric amount of oxygen required for the oxidative coupling is introduced into the first reaction zone and from 0 to about 40% of the said stoichiometric amount is introduced into the second reaction zone.

The catalyst is removed in the preparation of high molecular weight polyphenylene ethers from monohydric phenols, which are alkyl-substituted at the two ortho-positions but not at the para-position and may or may not be alkyl-substituted at the meta-position, by an oxidative coupling reaction with oxygen at from 15.degree. to 50.degree. C. in the presence of a catalyst complex obtained from a copper salt and an organic amine, in the presence of from 1 to 20 parts by weight of a solvent per part by weight of the monomeric phenol, and in the presence or absence of an activator, and removal of the metal component of the catalyst from the polyphenylene ether solution with a complex-forming or chelate-forming compound in aqueous solution, in the presence or absence of reducing and stabilizing substances and assistants for accelerating the interphase reactions and for phase separation, by a method in which the continuous removal of the copper catalyst is carried out in one or more mixer-settler stages at a phase volume ratio of the organic phase to the aqueous phase of from 1:0.1 to 1:1.0, preferably from 1:0.4 to 1:0.6.

A halogen-free flameproofed thermoplastic molding material consists of a halogen-free thermoplastic resin (A) and one or more further halogen-free components. The thermoplastic resin (A) is present in an amount of from 30 to 90% by weight, based on the molding material. The latter contains, as further components, from 1 to 50% by weight of a phenol/aldehyde resin (B), from 1 to 50% by weight of a nitrogen-containing organic compound (C) and from 3 to 50% by weight of a phosphorus-containing organic compound (D), the percentages in each case being based on the molding material. High molecular weight polyphenylene ethers are prepared from monohydric phenols by an oxidative coupling reaction with oxygen in the presence of a solvent and of a catalyst complex consisting of a copper salt and an organic amine of the general formula ##STR1## where R.sup.1 is C.sub.2 -C.sub.20 -alkylidene, preferably C.sub.2 -C.sub.12 -alkylidene, or alkenylidene, R.sup.2 is H or C.sub.1 -C.sub.12 -alkyl, preferably C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 -alkyl, or C.sub.5 -C.sub.8 -cycloalkyl, each of which is unsubstituted or substituted by functional groups, and n is an integer from 1 to 4, preferably 1 or 2. Preferred functional groups are --OR.sup.3, --NHR.sup.3 or --SR.sup.3, in which R.sup.3 is H C.sub.1 -C.sub.12 -alkyl or C.sub.5 -C.sub.8 -cycloalkyl, and the most suitable amines are 3-tert.-butoxypropylamine, 4-tert.-butoxybutylamine, 3-tert.-butoxy-2-methylpropylamine, 3-tert.-butoxy-2,3-dimethylpropylamine, 3-tert.-butoxy-2-methyloctylamine and N-methyl-N-(4-tert.-butoxybutyl)-amine. The polyphenylene ethers can be processed to moldings by a thermoplastic method.
