An antenna assembly operating in the AM/FM, 3G and 4G cellular, WiFi, Bluetooth, satellite and 5G bands. The assembly provides a wide bandwidth, orientation dependent, directional antenna via volumetric radiating elements that conformal to exterior surface(s) of a vehicle such as a passenger car. The volumetric antenna elements may be further controlled by embedded components and/or surrounded by controllable ground plane elements. In one application, the antenna may be used to detect a direction of approach by person to, for example, operate only certain door locks.

Techniques for implementing series-fed antenna arrays with a variable dielectric waveguide. In one implementation, coupling elements with optional controlled phase shifters are placed adjacent each radiating element of the array. To avoid frequency sensitivity of the resulting array, one or more waveguides have a variable propagation constant. The variable waveguide may use certain materials exhibiting this phenomenon, or may have configurable gaps between layers. Plated-through holes and pins can control the gaps; and/or a 2-D circular or a rectangular travelling wave array of scattering elements can be used as well.

A touchscreen, now incorporated in most smartphones, tablets, laptops, and similar devices, presents an effective and transparent method to incorporate continuous active user verification schemes. The touchscreen element grid structure can be used to capture information, such as a set of one-dimensional time-varying signals produced as the user's finger moves past the grid intersections points. This information may be used to verify the user, or that a valid user currently has possession of the mobile device, even while the user is not consciously engaged in an active verification process. Further functions, such as habitual gesture recognition, can also be performed using the same grid outputs.

Fingerprint based smartphone user verification

A multi-band whip antenna having a 30 MHz to 2 GHz bandwidth and an L-band dipole has its coverage extended up to 6 GHz by eliminating nulls and reducing VSWR problems that are cured through the utilization of a sleeve over the feedpoint of the L-band antenna. Chokes in the form of sleeves are provided at either end of the L-band dipole to shorten the L-band antenna for preventing reverse polarity currents at the L-band antenna feedpoint, with the antenna further including the use of double shielded meanderline to provide improved performance between 410-512 MHz and in which a capacitance sleeve is added at the bottom of the L-band antenna to effectively elongate the antenna below the L-band to permit operation below 700 MHz.

A leaky dielectric travelling wave surface waveguide antenna provides a multiband, low-profile antenna for satellite and other wideband (Ku/K/Ka/Q) communications applications. The antenna structure can be arranged into various types of arrays to yield a cost-effective, wideband/multiband operation with high power. In one implementation, the antenna includes a waveguide having a multi-layer substrate, a top surface, a feed (excitation) end, and a load end. One or more scattering features are disposed on the top surface of the waveguide or within the waveguide, and achieve operation in a leaky propagation mode. A wavelength correction element adds linear delay to incident energy received or transmitted by the antenna. The resulting structure permits a resulting beam direction of the antenna to be independent of the wavelength.

A low profile antenna using a cavity-backed central radiating surface surrounded by one or more ground plane surfaces. Passively reconfigurable structure provide frequency dependent coupling between the surfaces. The frequency dependent couplings may be implemented using meander line structures, Variable Impedance Transmission Lines (VITLs), or tunable VITLs that used interspersed electroactive sections.

A structure or method for detecting a substance using conductive surfaces. Segments of conductive wire are disposed adjacent each of the surfaces and multi-turn coils are also disposed between the two surfaces, typically such that the windings of the coils are disposed between the respective conductive wires and the surfaces. A linear chirp signal, is applied to the wire segments. With the coils deactivated, emissions from the wire induce the Nuclear Quadrupole Resonance (NQR). With the coils activated to generate a static magnetic field, emissions from the wire induce Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR). As a result, the characteristics of a substance located between the conductive surfaces may be determined using either or both resonant modalties.
