Emulsions prepared using a silicone polyether as the surfactant are stable in an aqueous media in the presence of salts such as electrolytes, alcohols, solvents, and combinations thereof. The emulsions can be prepared by (i) polymerizing an unsaturated monomeric organic compound in water containing the monomer, a silicone polyether, a catalyst, and optional organic surfactants, until a polymer of desired molecular weight is obtained; (ii) by mechanically emulsifying a non-silicon atom containing organic oil in water using a silicone polyether with or without addition of other organic surfactants; and (iii) by mixing and adding a silicone polyether to a previously prepared emulsion.

Emulsion polymerization techniques can be improved by using in the reaction, a precursor which is a cocyclic silicone which has a structure generally corresponding to the formula:

A solution of an alcohol stable emulsion or microemulsion containing an organopolysiloxane is made by polymerizing a cyclic siloxane in an aqueous medium containing the cyclic siloxane, a nonionic surfactant, an ionic surfactant, and a catalyst, until an organopolysiloxane of desired molecular weight is obtained; adding a silicone polyether to the emulsion or microemulsion and mixing the silicone polyether and the emulsion or microemulsion to form a blend; and adding the blend of silicone polyether and emulsion or microemulsion to aqueous alcohol. It is beneficial to cool the blend to below 20.degree.-25.degree. C. before adding it to aqueous alcohol. It is also beneficial to mix the silicone polyether and the emulsion or microemulsion without application of mechanically induced shear.

A hair treating method for imparting curl retention to hair in which at least one film forming ingredient is applied to the hair. The improvement utilizes as the film forming ingredient an organosilicon compound which is a nonpolar silsesquioxane. Hair fixative compositions including the nonpolar silsesquioxane are also disclosed.

Hair fixatives

A method of making a drawing media which can be applied to a substrate in which the drawing media is prepared by mixing together a pigment a binder, and an organosilicon compound. The organosilicon compound is a volatile low viscosity methylsilicone fluid which is either a cyclic silicone polymer or a short chain linear silicone polymer. The silicone containing drawing media is applied to the substrate, and the drawing media is allowed to dry on the substrate.

A clear shampoo is described which contains a cationic oil-in-water emulsion of an amine functional polydimethyl silicone, and a method of making clear and stable shampoo compositions, in which an emulsion of an amine functional siloxane can be added to a shampoo composition without causing cloudiness, and without contributing instability to the shampoo composition whereby phase separation occurs. In accordance with the method, an emulsion of an amine functional siloxane is added to a shampoo composition without the necessity of requiring that a pearling agent be employed for the purpose of disguising cloudiness.

A hair treating composition is disclosed which is a mixture of a film forming material and a solvent for the film forming material. The film forming material is an aminofunctional silicone resin formed by reacting a cyclic silylamine and a silicone resin. A hair treating method for imparting curl retention to hair employing the resin as the film forming material is described.
