Stray light absorbing films are described. In particular, stray light films including a black substrate, and first and second sets of microstructures are described. The described films can reduce stray light reflections in sensor modules and other optical devices. The first set of microstructures can have an average largest diameter between 0.5 and 125 μm. The second set of microstructures can have an average largest diameter of less than ½ of the average largest diameter of the first set of microstructures. The stray light absorbing film can have a specular reflectance for 8° incidence for wavelengths from 350-1200 nm of less than 0.3%.

Presently described are optical films, such as a brightness enhancing film, having a polymerized microstructured surface disposed on a preformed polymeric film wherein the film has a thickness of no greater than 3 mils and the polymerized microstructured surface consists of the reaction product of a substantially non-brominated polymerizable resin composition.

Optical films are described having a polymerized microstructured surface that is the reaction product of a polymerizable resin composition comprising at least one polymerizable ethylenically unsaturated triphenyl monomer. Also described are certain triphenyl (meth)acrylate monomers and polymerizable resin compositions.

A method of making optical films having a polymerized microstructured surface are described. The polymerized microstructured surface comprises the reaction product of a polymerizable resin composition comprising 10% to 100 wt-% of at least one biphenyl di(meth)acrylate monomer. The di(meth)acrylate monomer comprises a core biphenyl structure having two aromatic rings connected with a C&#x2014;C bond. The biphenyl di(meth)acrylate monomer preferably comprises a sufficient amount of ortho and/or meta(meth)acrylate substituents such that the monomer is a liquid at 25&#xb0; C.

The reflective polarizer comprises: a multilayer optical film comprising alternating layers of first and second polymeric layers that reflects light of a first polarization state and transmits light of a second polarization state, wherein for normally incident light of the second polarization state, the reflective polarizer has an internal percent transmission of at least 95% at 410 nm, and at most 25% at 380 nm. Nanocomposite hardcoats having smudge and abrasion resistant properties are disclosed. Latent reactive nanoparticles are contained within a binder phase to form a nanocomposite. When deprotected and treated with a reactive fluorochemical, nanoparticles present at the surface of the nanocomposite become permanently modified and impart smudge resistance. The nanocomposite hardcoats may optionally be supported on a primary substrate.
