Layers of energy curable inks and coatings containing little to no photoinitiator, are printed over or are covered with ink or coating layers that are not energy curable but do comprise a photoinitiator. All energy curable inks are then simultaneously cured when exposed to actinic radiation that passes through the ink or coating layers that are not energy curable but comprise photoinitiators.

Method of improving actinic cure of energy curable inks and coatings

Described herein is a polar non-aqueous dispersion comprising polar polymeric microparticles in a polar non-aqueous medium, the polar polymeric microparticles being insoluble in the medium and being produced by dispersion polymerization of vinyl monomers such as acrylate monomers in the medium in the presence of a polymeric acrylic stabilizer. Inks, coatings and overprint varnishes are formulated that employ the polar non-aqueous dispersion. Such inks, etc., exhibit superior chemical resistance properties, for example in one-part and two-part systems.

Polar functional non-aqueous acrylic dispersions

A method for printing on a substrate comprises two steps. The first step consists essentially of: applying onto a substrate one or more layers of an energy curable ink and applying one or more layers of a water-based coating over the top of the one or more layers of energy curable ink. The second step comprises the steps of, in any order: a) drying the one or more layers of water-based coating, and b) actinically or electron beam curing simultaneously all the energy curable ink layers.

Method of improving actinic cure of coatings

Described herein are water-based inks that comprise water, a water miscible solvent having a boiling point of about 56&#xb0; C. to about 98&#xb0; C., and a latex. In one aspect, the water miscible solvent comprises about 10 wt % to about 30 wt % of the ink (based on the total weight of the ink). In another aspect, the latex is an alcohol-tolerant latex that exhibits limited or no particle size increase in the presence of alcohol. Further described herein are articles printed with the inks, and methods of printing with the inks.

High speed water-based inks containing alcohol tolerant latexes

Described herein are polymer-encapsulated materials and a method for encapsulating materials with polymer via emulsion polymerization. The encapsulated materials include colorants (e.g., pigments and dyes, and in particular fluorescent dyes), optical brighteners, downconverters and upconverters. The encapsulated materials are produced by the emulsion polymerization of ethylenically unsaturated monomers. The polymer-encapsulation method described herein does not require the preparation of a miniemulsion homogenized with special equipment, such as an ultrasonification device, and the resulting polymer-encapsulated materials exhibit optical properties superior to polymer-encapsulated materials prepared by processes that include the preparation of a miniemulsion prepared with such special equipment, such as an ultrasonification device.

Encapsulated materials with improved properties

Described herein are depolymerized polystyrene resins derived from polystyrene source resins. The depolymerized polystyrene resins undergo a depolymerization in which chemical bonds are cleaved, producing depolymerized polystyrene resins of lower molecular weight. The polystyrene resins may be modified by chemical reaction with monomers, polymers, and oligomers, such as acrylates thereof. Also described are ink and coating compositions that include the depolymerized and modified polystyrene resins.

High molecular weight polystyrene in inks and coatings

Described herein are compositions suitable for use as binder components for inclusion in printing inks and coatings, such as those used in the gravure and flexographic printing process and which are printed on substrates such as polyolefin (e.g., polyethylene, polypropylene) and poly(ethylene terephthalate) (PET). The compositions are non-aqueous dispersions in which an one or more ethylenically unsaturated acrylates or (meth)acrylates is polymerized with a polyurethane, polyurethane-urea or polyurea in a non-aqueous polymerization medium, such as esters, ketones, and mixtures thereof, forming polymeric hybrid resins in the polymerization medium, which are solvent-dispersible hybrid resins of polyurethane-polyacrylate, polyurethane-urea-polyacrylate, and polyurea-polyacrylate. Films of hybrid resins are also disclosed. These materials exhibit improved film adhesion and are suitable for flexographic and gravure printing inks, especially for printing applications where adhesive lamination bond strengths are required, especially plastic films packaging applications.

Polyurethane-polyacrylate hybrid systems for packaging inks and coatings

Described herein are inks and coating compositions comprising semiconductor metal oxides and composites thereof, which are natural environmentally sustainable materials that may be recycled and/or reused indefinitely. Semiconductor metal oxides offer an alternative to relatively more toxic, non-sustainable, photo and heat-degrading, migrating traditional photoinitiator agents used in actinic radiation curable compositions. The semiconductor metal oxides and composites thereof absorb visible or UV-light as photocatalysts and/or semiconductors, or absorb electron beam radiation, forming radicals for radical events as polymerization reactions and color enhancement events.

Described herein is an actinically curable adhesive composition, suitable for sealing flexible packaging, that includes an inert urethane polymer and an ethylenically unsaturated monomer component selected from at least one monofunctional ethylenically unsaturated monomer, at least one multifunctional ethylenically unsaturated monomer, and a combination thereof, wherein the ethylenically unsaturated monomer component disperses the inert urethane polymer. The compositions are suitable for forming flexible packaging materials for foods and other materials, particularly sensitive materials. Also described are flexible packaging materials and a method for preparing an actinically curable adhesive composition.

Actinically curable adhesive composition with improved properties

Described herein are alkoxylated polymers suitable for use in primers, inks or coating compositions. The alkoxylated polymers derive from a polyalkylene glycol polymer or copolymer backbone having one or more alkoxylated sites in a non-reactive form and at least one reactive terminal end, and one or more polyfunctional monomers or oligomers having two or more functional polar groups with an active hydrogen, or mixtures thereof, wherein the alkoxylated polymer is polymerized in a one step process. Primers, inks or coating compositions are further described.

Alkoxylated dispersing agents

The present invention provides radiation curable hybrid ink and coating compositions comprising large amounts of inert hard resin. The radiation hybrid ink and coating compositions have good lithographic properties, low roller swelling, and a low gloss-back effect when overprinted with a UV varnish. The ink and coating compositions are useful for lithographic wet and waterless printing.

The present invention is directed to energy curable offset conductive inks and hybrid offset conductive ink compositions that contain an oxidative curable ink and the energy curable offset conductive ink. The conductive inks and ink compositions exhibit low levels of resistance and hence have superior conductivity.

Methods and apparatus for flexographic color printing, and more particularly for implementing 'wet trapping' in flexographic printing using energy curable flexographic liquid inks are presented. Radiation curable inks can be formulated that wet trap over each other without back-trapping onto the plates and anilox units of down-line printing units by controlling the storage modulus of the inklcoating. The storage modulus G' in the inks can be controlled to ensure that the highest G&#x2032; ink is printed ISt down with successive colors being trapped in the order of their (declining) G&#x2032; values. An image in wet ink can thus be trapped over a different image in wet ink of a different color without picking the ISt ink back up and redepositing it onto the subsequent plates and rollers in the printing press (back-trapping).
