A downhole sensor apparatus may include a structure securing a circuit board. The structure may be configured to be inserted into a recess in a tool on a drill string. The downhole sensor apparatus may include one or more sensors coupled to the circuit board and a cap over the structure. The downhole sensor apparatus may further include a data port electrically coupled to the circuit board and configured to transmit data from the sensors to an external device. The downhole sensor apparatus may include a threaded element configured to thread into complementary threads in the recess in the tool. The downhole sensor apparatus may be configured to operate in an idle condition. The downhole sensor apparatus may compare readings from at least two sensors to threshold downhole conditions and begin normal operation when the readings from the at least two sensors meet or exceed the threshold downhole conditions.

Downhole sensor apparatus and related systems, apparatus, and methods

An earth boring tool includes a tool body and a cutting element secured to the tool body. The tool body has at least one surface defining a cutting element recess where the cutting element is secured within the cutting element recess by a braze material. The cutting element includes a generally cylindrical substrate having at least one outer surface defining a braze recess. The braze material is disposed at an interface between the cutting element and the cutting element recess, including within the braze recess of the generally cylindrical substrate. The tool body does not include a surface defining a feature on the tool body complementary to the braze recess in the generally cylindrical substrate.

A sub having an anti-rotation feature for a resource exploration and recovery system includes a tubular having an outer surface and an inner surface defining a flow bore. A sleeve is slideably disposed in the flow bore between a first position and a second position. The sleeve includes an inner surface portion having a taper. A dart including an end portion is disposed in the sleeve. The dart is configured to shift the sleeve between the first position and the second position when exposed to a selected pressure in the flowbore. The end portion includes a tapered section. The tapered section mating with the taper formed in the inner surface to rotatably lock the plug to the inner surface of the sleeve.

An earth-boring tool may include a tool body and a coupling region configured to couple the earth-boring tool to an adjacent portion of a drill string. The earth-boring tool may also include one or more sensors disposed on the tool body. The earth-boring tool may further include a connector disposed in the coupling region electrically connected to the one or more sensors. The connector may be configured to enable a removable connection from an external device to the one or more sensors.

An earth-boring tool having at least one cutting element with a multi-friction cutting face provides for the steering of formation cuttings as the cuttings slide across the cutting face. The multi-friction cutting element includes a diamond table bonded to a substrate of superabrasive material. The diamond table has a cutting face formed thereon with a cutting edge extending along a periphery of the cutting face. The cutting face has a first area having an average surface finish roughness less than an average surface finish roughness of a second area of the cutting face, the two areas separated by a boundary having a proximal end proximate a tool crown and a distal end remote from the tool crown.

Methods of forming cutting elements with cutting faces exhibiting multiple coefficients of friction, and related methods

An instrumented cutting element, an earth-boring drilling tool, and related methods are disclosed. The instrumented cutting element may include a substrate base, a diamond table disposed on the substrate base, a sensor disposed within the diamond table, a lead wire coupled to the sensor and disposed within a side trench formed within the substrate base, and a filler material disposed within the side trench. The earth-boring drilling tool may include securing the instrumented cutting element to a blade of a bit body. A related method may include forming the instrumented cutting element and earth-boring drilling tool.

Apparatuses and methods for forming an instrumented cutting for an earth-boring drilling tool

Methods of forming earth-boring tools including one or more instrumented cutting elements may involve placing a cutting element partially within a pocket extending into a body of an earth-boring tool. The cutting element may include a first hole extending partially through a cutting element from a back side of the cutting element toward a cutting face and a second, shorter, wider hole extending partially through the cutting element from the back side toward the cutting face. The second hole may be in fluid communication with the first hole. An extension including a passageway extending through the extension may be located at least partially within the second hole, such that the passageway may be in fluid communication with the first hole. A thermocouple may be inserted through the passageway and into the first hole after affixing the cutting element in the pocket.

Techniques for forming instrumented cutting elements and affixing the instrumented cutting elements to earth-boring tools and related apparatuses and methods

Earth-boring tools may have a body, a cutting element attached to the body at a first location, and a formation-engaging structure attached to the body at a second location. The formation-engaging structure may be movable during a drilling operation between a first position and a second position. In the first position, the formation-engaging structure may be located rotationally behind the cutting element at a first radial distance from a longitudinal axis of the body at which the cutting element will at least initially shield the formation-engaging structure from engaging a formation. In the second position, the formation-engaging structure may be located at a different second radial distance from the longitudinal axis of the body at which the formation-engaging structure will engage a formation.

A fastening apparatus includes a retaining member comprising a shape memory material configured to transform, responsive to application of a stimulus, from a first solid phase to a second solid phase. The retaining member is disposed within a hole in a body and secured within the hole by phase change which creates an interference fit to secure the retaining member against rotational and axial movement. The hole has a second axial cross-sectional shape. The retaining member has a first axial cross-sectional shape that is preferably either circular or rectangular.

A tool for forming or servicing a wellbore includes a first body, a second body, and a retaining member located between a surface of the first body and a surface of the second body. The retaining member at least partially retains the second body with respect to the first body. The retaining member comprises a shape memory material configured to transform, responsive to application of a stimulus, from a first solid phase to a second solid phase. A method of forming a tool for forming or servicing a wellbore includes disposing a retaining member comprising a shape memory material in a space between a first body and a second body and transforming the shape memory material from a first solid phase to a second solid phase by application of a stimulus to cause the retaining member to create a mechanical interference.

Method and apparatus for securing bodies using shape memory materials

An earth-boring tool includes a blade located on a body of the earth-boring tool with a pocket formed in an exposed outer surface of the blade. A formation-engaging structure is affixed within the pocket. The formation-engaging structure includes a distal end, a proximal end and a tapered sidewall therebetween. The distal end of the formation-engaging structure includes a formation-engaging surface. The tapered sidewall engages a tapered inner surface of the pocket. The tapered sidewall of the formation-engaging structure and the tapered inner surface of the pocket are each sized and configured to provide an interference fit between the formation-engaging structure and the pocket of the blade. In additional embodiments, instead of retention by interference fit, the formation-engaging structure is retained to the blade by a threaded fastener threaded within a tapped bore extending through the blade. The threaded fastener is received within a receiving formation of the formation-engaging structure.
