A display device has a display, operable to generate a real image, and an optical system. In the optical system are at least two free-form reflective surfaces, S I and S. At least one of the reflective surfaces is convex in one direction at substantially all points of its optically active area. Light rays from the display are reflected on SI before they are reflected on S. The reflective surfaces SI and Sare arranged to generate a virtual image from the real image on the display, by projecting light from the display to an eye position. The field of view occupied by the virtual image as seen from the eye position is greater than 50 degrees in at least one direction, preferably the direction linking the two eyes of an intended user.

Display devices with reflectors

A display device has a display, operable to generate a real image, and an optical system with one or more lenslets arranged to generate a virtual sub-image from a respective partial real image on the display, by each lenslet projecting light from the display to an eye position. The sub-images combine to form a virtual image viewable from the eye position. A radial focal length distribution of the optical system decreases with increasing radial angle at radial angles greater than 20&#xb0; from the frontward direction.

Imaging optics adapted to the human eye resolution

A display device has a display, operable to generate a real image, and an optical system, comprising one or more lenslets, arranged to generate a virtual sub-image from a partial real image on the display, by each lenslet projecting light from the display to an eye position. The sub-images combine to form a virtual image viewable from the eye position. At least one lenslet is symmetric with respect to a plane, and the display surface is cylindrical with its axis perpendicular to that plane.

Advanced refractive optics for immersive virtual reality

A given image is displayed by generating a succession of partial real images, each representing part of the given image and together representing the given image, and at least some of the partial real images occupying overlapping positions. The partial real images are successively imaged to form a sub-image viewable from an eye position. The sub-images combine spatially and temporally to form a virtual image viewable from the eye position so that said overlapping portions of different partial real images form different portions of the virtual image. The partial real images may be displayed on a digital or other display, and imaged by optical channels each using one or more lenslets.

Visual display with time multiplexing

A display device has a display to generate a real image. An optical system has lenslets, each generating a virtual sub-image from a respective partial real image on the display, by each lenslet projecting light from the display to an eye position. The sub-images combine to form a virtual image viewable from the eye position. At least one of the lenslets is an 'RXIR' lenslet, in which the light rays from the display to the eye position are deflected sequentially at least four times by a refraction (R), a reflection (X), a total internal or metallic reflection (I), and a refraction (R) in that order.

A display generates a real image of object pixels, from which an optical system with lenslets generates an immersive virtual image of image pixels, by each lenslet projecting light from the display to a respective pupil range on an imaginary eyeball subtending 15 degrees whole angle at the center of the eyeball. Object pixels are in clusters, each associated with a lenslet that produces from the object pixels a partial virtual image. The partial virtual images combine to form the immersive virtual image. Imaging light rays on the pupil range via a given lenslet come from the associated cluster. Imaging light rays falling on the pupil range from a given cluster pass through the associated lenslet. Imaging light rays exiting a given lenslet towards the pupil range from one image pixel of the immersive virtual image are from a single object pixel of the associated cluster.

Immersive compact display glasses

A luminaire includes a mixing chamber having an array of apertures in one wall, a light source to supply light into the mixing chamber, and an array of optics outside the mixing chamber, each positioned to cooperate with a respective one of the apertures to emit light from the mixing chamber as a beam. The shape, size, and/or direction of the output light beam are controllably varied by controlling the shape, size, and/or position of each aperture relative to its associated optic.

Thin luminaire

An etendue squeezing optic includes light guiding elements that are extruded sideways to guide light to a wide outlet surface for efficient injection into an edge face of a flat light guide such as a backlight panel for a visual display, in combination with a light source optically coupled to the light inlet through an air-gap, so that light entering the optic through the air-gap is confined to a cone of directions determined by a critical angle of refraction into the optic from air at the air-gap.

&#xc9;tendue-squeezing light injector and apparatus

A shell integrator has a hollow transparent body with inner and outer surfaces formed as arrays of lenslets. Each lenslet of the inner surface images a common source region in the middle of the hollow body onto a respective lenslet of the outer surface. Each lenslet of the outer surface forms a virtual image of the respective lenslet of the inner surface at the common source region. One integrator has a light-guide following the surface of the hollow body from an inlet end at a central region of the surface to an outlet end at a rim of the hollow body. The light-guide inlet end is shaped to receive light from the common source region and direct such light along the light-guide. Another integrator is generally elongated, and may be semicylindrical. Any of these integrators may have a stepped surface forming a Fresnel lens.

Shell integrator

A vehicle lighting unit can be configured to include a thin light guide. The vehicle lighting unit can include a solid light guide having a first surface including an internal reflection portion and a light exiting portion that are formed as a single continued surface, a second surface opposite to the first surface, and a light incident surface through which light enters the light guide so that the light reaches and is internally reflected off the internal reflection portion of the first surface, then is internally reflected off the reflection portion of the second surface, and exits through the light exiting portion of the first surface. The reflection portion of the second surface can include a plurality of divided reflection regions, and the reflection regions can include at least one reflection region disposed at a reference position and at least one reflection region disposed at a position closer to the light exiting surface than the reference position.

Vehicle lighting unit

A luminaire has a light source and a shell integrator. The shell integrator has a transparent dome over the light source, with inner and outer surfaces formed as arrays of lenslets. Each lenslet of the inner surface images the light source onto a respective lenslet of the outer surface, and each lenslet of the outer surface images the respective lenslet of the inner surface as a virtual image onto the light source. The dome may be substantially hemispherical. The light source and the integrator may be at an input of a collimator.

A folded circularly symmetric illumination optic comprising a first light transfer mode having a first central refractive surface and a second central refractive surface, wherein one of the first and second central refractive surfaces has at least one peened feature; a second light transfer mode having a first refractive surface, a first TIR surface, a second TIR surface and a second refractive surface; a third light transfer mode having a first refractive surface, a first TIR surface and a second refractive surface, wherein the first TIR surface has at least one peening feature, and wherein the second refractive surface is conical; wherein the first TIR surface and second refractive surface of the second light transfer mode is coincident at least one point, wherein the second refractive surface of the third light transfer mode is coincident with the first TIR surface and second refractive surface of the second light transfer mode.

Faceted folded-optic collimator

An optoelectronic cooling system is equally applicable to an LED collimator or a photovoltaic solar concentrator. A transparent fluid conveys heat from the optoelectronic chip to a hollow cover over the system aperture. The cooling system can keep a solar concentrator chip at the same temperature as found for a one-sun flat-plate solar cell. Natural convection or forced circulation can operate to convey heat from the chip to the cover.

Transparent heat-spreader for optoelectronic applications

The present embodiments provide methods and systems to homogenize illumination on a target. Some embodiments provide rotational symmetric dual-reflector solar concentrators that include a concave primary reflector with an aim-direction directed toward the sun to receive optical radiation in a far-field angle within an angle of acceptance and redirect radiation upward and centrally generating flux concentration, a secondary reflector positioned coaxial with said primary reflector to receive said redirected radiation and redirect radiation downward and centrally generating flux concentration solar rays, and a central target zone receiving said concentrated solar rays, where cross sections of said primary and secondary reflectors both further comprise a multiplicity of segments that establish a correspondence between pairs of segments, each of said segments of said primary reflector such as to image said angle of acceptance onto said corresponding segment of said secondary reflector to image onto said target zone.

Multi-junction solar cells with a homogenizer system and coupled non-imaging light concentrator

A solar concentrator including a housing having a receiving wall, a reflecting wall and at least two end walls, the receiving, reflecting and end walls defining a three-dimensional volume having an inlet, wherein a vertical axis of the housing is generally perpendicular to the inlet, a receiver mounted on the receiving wall of the housing, the receiver including at least one photovoltaic cell, wherein a vertical axis of the receiver is disposed at a non-zero angle relative to the vertical axis of the housing, at least one clip disposed on the reflecting wall, an optical element received within the three-dimensional volume, the optical element including at least one tab, the tab being engaged by the clip to align the optical element with the receiver, and a window received over the inlet to enclose the housing.
