A downhole system and a method of performing an operation downhole. The downhole system includes a string, a downhole tool, and a release device. A downhole tool is coupled to a string via the release device. The release device includes a shear member therein having a first shear axis that has a first shear resistance and a second shear axis having a second shear resistance less than the first shear resistance, wherein the first shear axis is aligned with a longitudinal axis of the string and the second shear axis is aligned with a circumferential axis of the string. The string is conveyed through a borehole to place the downhole tool at a selected location of the borehole. The downhole tool is secured within the borehole and the string is rotated to release the release device.

Anisotropic mechanical shear bolt

A system and method for stimulating hydrocarbon production from a wellbore that perforates the formation around the wellbore in strategic locations so that fractures can be formed in the formation having specific orientations. The system includes deep penetration perforators that extend past a portion of the formation adjacent the wellbore having locally high internal stresses (a stress cage); and big hole perforators that form perforations with a larger entrance diameter. The perforators form perforations in the formation that are axially consolidated along the wellbore. After perforating, the wellbore is hydraulically fractured with high pressure fluid, which creates fractures in a formation surrounding the wellbore that extend radially outward from the perforations. Creating perforations that are axially consolidated reduces the chances of forming competing fractures in the formation during fracturing.

System and method for perforating a wellbore

A method of closing a fluid flow path in a wellbore is disclosed that in one non-limiting embodiment includes: supplying a flexible structure having a selected shape sufficient to seat on an opening of the fluid flow path, the flexible structure including pores of selected dimensions; determining seating of the flexible structure on the opening of the fluid flow path from a sensor measurement; and supplying a slurry containing a sealant to the flexible structure seated on the opening of the fluid flow path to plug the pores with the sealant to close the fluid flow path.

Apparatus and methods for closing flow paths in wellbores

A downhole tool for controlling the flow of a fluid in a wellbore comprises: an annular body having a flow passage therethrough; a frustoconical element disposed about the annular body; a sealing element carried on the annular body and configured to engage a portion of the frustoconical element; and a bottom sub disposed about the annular body; wherein at least one of the frustoconical element and the bottom sub comprise a polymeric composite that includes: a polymer component comprising one or more of the following: a poly(ether ether ketone); or an epoxy, and a filler crosslinked with the polymer component.

Polymeric composites and articles formed thereof

A perforating system for creating perforations that azimuthally circumscribe an inner wall of a wellbore, and that are at substantially the same depth in the wellbore. The perforating system includes perforating assemblies that are housed in a gun body and spaced axially apart. The perforating assemblies have shaped charges positioned at selective angles around an axis of the gun body and at substantially the same axial location in the gun body. Bulkheads are provided between adjacent shaped charges, so that initiating the shaped charges forms angularly spaced apart perforations in a tubular in which the perforating system is inserted. Pressurizing the wellbore with fracturing fluid extends the perforations into fractures, where the fractures are normal to an axis of the wellbore and in a plane of minimum stress.

Perforating system for hydraulic fracturing operations

An apparatus can include a well treatment system that supplies a treatment fluid, a conveyance device and a well tool conveyed by the conveyance device. The well tool can include a perforator configured to form at least one hole in the wellbore tubular and a restrictor projecting from an outer surface of the well tool and adjacent to the perforator. A gap may separate the restrictor and the wellbore tubular. The well tool may also include a flow space that provides fluid communication between a location uphole of the restrictor and a location downhole of the restrictor. The flow space is sized to be restricted by particles in the treatment fluid. The restrictor at least restricts fluid flow through an annulus between the restrictor and the wellbore tubular, and the well tool diverts a substantial amount of the treatment fluid through an at least one hole formed by the perforator. Perforator with a mechanical diversion tool and related methods

A sleeve apparatus having a longitudinal axis and an interior further includes a tubular having a plurality of ports providing a length of fluidic access between the interior and an exterior of the tubular, the length measured with respect to the longitudinal axis; and, a sleeve disposed within the tubular and configured to move longitudinally with respect to the longitudinal axis. The sleeve further has a plurality of apertures misaligned with the plurality of ports in a closed condition of the sleeve apparatus and at least substantially aligned with the plurality of ports in a fully open condition of the sleeve apparatus, and a plurality of non-apertured sections aligned with the plurality of ports in the closed condition. A longitudinal shifting distance of the sleeve to move the sleeve apparatus from the closed condition to the fully open condition is less than the length of fluidic access.

Sleeve apparatus, downhole system, and method

An apparatus can include a conveyance device having a flow bore, an isolator forming a testing volume at least partially defined by an inner surface of a wellbore tubular, and one or more pressure sensors generating signals representative of a pressure in the testing volume while the conveyance device moves the isolator axially through the wellbore tubular. The isolator substantially isolates a testing fluid received from the flow bore in the testing volume from an adjacent bore of the wellbore tubular. A location of at least one flow path in the wellbore tubular is identified by estimating a pressure of the testing fluid in the testing volume. Hydraulic injection diagnostic tool

A hydraulic fracture diagnostic system for reservoir evaluation of a high angle wellbore includes a coiled tubing string that extends from the surface to a location within a wellbore. The system includes a sensor and a pump connected to the coiled tubing string. A tool having at least two packing elements and a port positioned between the packing elements is connected to the coiled tubing string. The coiled tubing string positions the tool adjacent a fracture. The packing elements isolate the fracture and the port is configured to provide communication with the isolated portion of the wellbore. A diagnostic method includes pumping a volume of fluid from the isolated portion of a wellbore using a coiled tubing string and monitoring the pressure within the coiled tubing string. Pressure within the coiled tubing string may also be monitored after injection of fluid into the isolated wellbore through the coiled tubing string.

Method and system for hydraulic fracture diagnosis with the use of a coiled tubing dual isolation service tool

A packer having a thermal memory spacing system that includes a portion of the system that that selectively changes an outer diameter due. The packer may include upper and lower sealing elements, and at least one thermal memory shape material sub positioned between the sealing elements. The thermal memory shape material sub may have a first outer diameter at a first temperature and a second larger outer diameter at a second temperature. The first temperature may be greater than the second temperature. The outer diameter of the sub may be selectively increased to temporarily decrease the annular area in which debris and/or materials may collect and potentially cause the packer to become stuck within the wellbore. Prior to moving the packer to a different location, the outer diameter of the sub may be decreased to increase the annular area.

Thermal memory spacing system

A method and system for determining information about a wellbore with coiled tubing. A downhole device may be positioned within coiled tubing and run down the wellbore to determine diagnostic information about a location with the wellbore. The downhole device may store diagnostic information in a storage device that may be analyzed when the device is returned to the surface. A downhole device may be connected to the end of a string of coiled tubing that includes a diagnostic device and memory sealed in a chamber. A flow path past the chamber is in communication with the coiled tubing string permitting the flow of fluid past the chamber. A downhole device including a diagnostic device may be connected to a recess in an exterior of a coiled tubing string.

Coiled tubing downhole tool

A hydraulic fracture diagnostic system for reservoir evaluation of a high angle wellbore includes coiled tubing that extends from the surface to a wellbore location. The system includes a sensor and a pump connected to the coiled tubing and a pump and sensor connected to an annulus between the coiled tubing and the wellbore casing. A tool having at least two packing elements and a port positioned between the packing elements is connected to the coiled tubing and is positioned adjacent a fracture. The packing elements isolate the fracture and the port is configured to provide communication with the isolated portion of the wellbore. A diagnostic method includes pumping a volume of fluid into the isolated portion of a wellbore and monitoring the pressure within the annulus via the coiled tubing. The tool may also be used in an openhole portion of a wellbore to diagnose the formation.

A packer that may be used to isolate a portion of a wellbore and a method of using the packer within the wellbore. The packer includes a body with a central bore, an upper sealing element, a lower sealing element, treatment ports, upper equalization ports, and a sleeve positioned within the central bore. The sleeve may be moved to selectively permit fluid communication through the treatment ports and the upper equalization ports. The packer may include lower equalization ports and the sleeve may be moved to also selectively permit fluid communication through the lower equalization ports. The sleeve may include a closed end and an inner wall that separates a secondary cavity from a main cavity. The sleeve includes a plurality of openings that either permits or inhibits fluid communication through the ports of the packer depending on the position of the sleeve within the central bore of the packer.

Straddle packer equalization and self recovery module

A downhole tool having a first packing element and a second packing element configured to synchronically set to selectively hydraulically isolate a portion of the wellbore. The lower packing element may be first set against the well with the upper packing element next being set against the well. A slip joint permits a change in distance between the packing elements during the setting of the packing elements. The slip joint may be energized to apply a force to the lower packing element to prevent the unsetting of the lower packing element during the setting of the upper packing element. A resilient member may be used to energize the slip joint or the slip joint could be hydraulically or pneumatically energized. Once both packing elements are set, the wellbore may then be treated by flowing fluid out of a ported sub positioned between the packing elements.
